‘Billy Joel: And So It Goes’ Directors Share Inspirational Message From Ailing Singer: ‘He Will Be Back’
Image
Billy Joel had planned to be in the audience for the opening night of the Tribeca Festival to watch the world premiere of a new documentary about his tumultuous rise to the top of the charts

But the singer, who was recently diagnosed with a brain disorder known as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, was forced to skip Wednesday’s glitzy screening of “Billy Joel: And So It Goes.” Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, the film’s directors, assured the audience that Joel is confident that he will return to the stage.

“He will be back,” Lacy said. She also shared a short message from the music legend. “Getting old sucks, but it’s still preferable to getting cremated,” Joel’s note read.

After going public with his health issues, Joel recently announced he was cancelling 17 shows he booked at stadiums across North America and England while he underwent “specific physical therapy.

Tribeca Festival: Miley Cyrus’ ‘Something Beautiful,’ Barbara Walters Doc and 11 Other Films We’re Excited to See
Image
The Tribeca Film Festival is all about the music.

Three years ago, Taylor Swift brought her directorial debut short “All Too Well” and revealed her desire to continue working in film. This time, it’s Miley Cyrus who moves behind the camera with “Something Beautiful,” which is being billed as a “one-of-a-kind pop opera.”

“We’re all about showcasing new ways for people to express themselves and differentiate themselves and explore whatever new forms of storytelling are speaking to them,” says Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca.

This year’s festival isn’t just about the pop culture icons — though it will premiere new documentaries on Metallica, De La Soul and Billy Joel. Tribeca’s nonfiction lineup also includes intimate looks at news legends, sushi masters and even a giant manta ray named “Willy Wow.”

Then there are films that put a meta-twist on things by having real-life fathers and daughters...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: Who is Poodle Moth?

“The Masked Singer” season 11 debuted another quartet of contestants on March 20. Of these new contenders for the Golden Mask, our favorite is the one disguised as Poodle Moth. She won over the crowd and the judges with her cover of the Billy Joel classic “Just the Way You Are.”

Who are the Grammy darlings the academy can’t resist: Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars … but not Taylor Swift?
Image
I throw around the concept of “Grammy darlings” a lot, but what exactly constitutes a Grammy darling? Is it just an artist who doesn’t lose Grammys often, like U2, Adele or Bruno Mars? Let’s go through a few top names.

Beyoncé: Darling

Listen, the most awarded person in Grammy history is definitely a darling. Granted, she has yet to win Album of the Year. However, more impressively, all of her projects have won at least one Grammy. Most have won multiple, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.” Beyoncé also gets nominations for pretty much anything she submits, and will likely become the first artist to nab nominations in rap, rock, R&b, dance, pop and country. On top of all that, it’s rare for Beyoncé to miss nominations in the general field, especially with no nominations review committees anymore to potentially force her out.

Bruno Mars Served Popsugar Shots in Hawaii - and Shared Why His Rum Is "Luxurious"
Image
Image Source: Courtesy of SelvaRey Rum

Bruno Mars is at ease behind a bar - his bar. He's armed with a bottle of premixed shooters, his SelvaRey Rum the star ingredient, while stationed across from an array of fans and press, many who are recording the enviable encounter. Mars makes small talk as he hands out lowball glasses of the shots to the excited first patrons of his SelvaRey Rum pop-up bar at the luxury Fairmont Orchid resort on the Big Island, Hawaii. "Is this your first time in Hawaii?" he posits to one attendee, before making a quip that his on-theme Hawaiian shirt was picked up at the airport.

The shooters go down easy and smooth - thanks, of course, to the award-winning SelvaRey, which launched in 2014 but Mars bought into later. SelvaRey currently has four offerings: white rum, chocolate rum, a coconut rum, and their Owner's Reserve, crafted...

Willie Nelson in La grande arnaque (2004)
Willie Nelson’s ‘Ride Me Back Home’ Is Another Sturdy Set of Late-Life Wisdom
Willie Nelson in La grande arnaque (2004)
Two years ago, Willie Nelson delivered God’s Problem Child, a tragicomic heart-stopping meditation on the singer’s rapidly advancing age. A year later, he released an equally sturdy follow-up (2018’s Last Man Standing), and after detouring with his collection of Sinatra standards, the 86-year-old legend is back with Ride Me Back Home, yet another collection of late-life wisdoms and honky-truths.

Despite its reliance on other songwriters to convey mortal meditations (see the pair of choice Guy Clark Covers: “My Favorite Picture of You” and the timely “Immigrant Eyes”), Nelson...

Kristy McNichol in Just the Way You Are (1984)
Amy Schumer's 'Don't Need No Makeup' crushes that One Direction song you like
Kristy McNichol in Just the Way You Are (1984)
Amy Schumer revealed her breakthrough scientific study on the booty-poop connection with her song parody "Milk Milk Lemonade," which had fun with booty anthems, Sophie's "Lemonade" and bodily fluids. Now the "Inside Amy Schumer" star has a boy band song that helps to inform the girl that she's beautiful inside, and she doesn't need that "goop" she calls makeup. If the tune sounds familiar, that's because it's batting awfully close to One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful." Schumer toys with the notion that dudes who prefer "no makeup" might not actually know what that really looks like, but thematically her song pounds away at these "I see you're beauty, even if you don't" feel-good tunes so very condescending. "You're turning heads when you walk through the door / Don't need make-up, to cover up / Being the way that you are is enough / Everyone else in the room can see it / Everyone else but you.

Bruno Mars Tries to Make Gold Hair Rollers Happen
The Voice (2011)
Bruno Mars took to The Voice stage with Mark Ronson last night to sing their catchy new single "Uptown Funk," but it was his very questionable 'do that had viewers doing a double take.

The 29-year-old "Just the Way You Are" singer took to the stage in a full set of hair rollers, definitely making for one of the most bizarre beauty trends we've seen in a while.

X Factor Stereo Kicks on sing-off drama: 'Cheryl was pretty harsh'
The X Factor eliminees Stereo Kicks have suggested that Cheryl was "harsh" during their sing-off.

Stereo Kicks lost out in Deadlock to Cheryl's act Lauren Platt, but not before Cheryl had criticised Mel B for choosing to save the boys.

The X Factor Stereo Kicks' Casey on womanising rumours: "I love girls"

"I thought it was pretty harsh," Stereo Kicks member Chris Leonard told Digital Spy today. "The way Cheryl put it across was, 'You can't criticise them like that and then say yes to keep them in'.

"Cheryl gave out about people earlier on in the competition, saying that when they were sick you can't use that as an excuse. And then Lauren was a bit under the weather this week, but Cheryl brought it up. You can't say one thing and then do the other, it's not really fair. But it is what it is, it's happened,...

X Factor's Brian Friedman on Stereo Kicks: 'Louis's switch hurt them'
Brian Friedman has spoken about Stereo Kicks' departure from The X Factor.

The X Factor creative director revealed that judge Louis Walsh made a last-minute change to Stereo Kicks' staging, which Friedman said hurt the group's performance.

X Factor's Stereo Kicks: 'We never thought we'd come this far'

Speaking on The Xtra Factor, Friedman said: "Maybe Louis shouldn't have cut the dancers last night and then maybe the boys would have had some fun on stage."

Speaking about the last-minute change, he said: "It was just one of those changes that you find out about before the show - Louis didn't want the dancers anymore."

Louis Walsh on Stereo Kicks exit: 'Everybody made a mistake'

He added: "You would have seen the boys having fun. They each had a girl to interact with on stage and when the girls went away, it just sort of sucked...

The X Factor: See Tulisa return to help out Stereo Kicks
Tulisa Contostavlos returned to The X Factor this week to help the last band standing, Stereo Kicks.

As part of this week's Jukebox theme, the former judge was given the responsibility of choosing one of Stereo Kicks' songs for the weekend and picked the Bruno Mars track 'Just the Way You Are'.

However, it seems Contostavlos took her role very seriously, as she was photographed helping out the eight-piece boyband at a London recording studio on Wednesday.

Of course, Contostavlos already knows the boys as she helped their mentor Louis Walsh at Judges' Houses in Bermuda.

And Stereo Kicks should probably listen to her advice, as she mentored Little Mix - the only group ever to win The X Factor.

"I'm proud to be part of the X Factor family and I'm very excited to be involved this year," Contostavlos has said. "I was more than happy...

Bruno Mars Feasts on Lobster at a Fave JFK Spot in Boston
Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars knows how to live like a local when in New England. The "Just the Way You Are" singer, who was in Boston to perform a concert at the Td Garden on Wednesday night, headed to the Union Oyster House, part of the Freedom Trail, for a traditional seafood feast with two friends. The group even sat in the coveted Kennedy booth in the upstairs dining room, which was dedicated in President John F. Kennedy's honor because his family loved to dine on seafood there. Kristy McNichol in Just the Way You Are (1984)
Why the Grammy Awards only got it half right with the new sampling rule
Kristy McNichol in Just the Way You Are (1984)
The Grammy Awards governing body, the Recording Academy, has never been one to make rash decisions when it comes to modifying the awards procedure, so here, in 2014, they have made a major decision regarding sampling: Starting with the Feb. 8, 2015 Grammy Awards, songs that include samples or interpolations of previously written songs will be allowed in all songwriting categories, including the coveted Song of the Year. Is this a good decision? I’m not so sure. In some ways, the Grammys are so cautious in making changes that they miss the cultural significance of that musical moment (and that is partially the Grammys’ point: they aren’t meant to bow to trends or fads). On the plus side, this is simply an acknowledgement that a new, creative work that stands on its own that uses a sample to add some zing or to salute an influence, shouldn’t be exempt because of the sample.

Billy’s last pop album was 1993′s River Of Dreams, but he’s still made his presence known over the last two decades, primarily on the concert stage, including a series of “Face-To-Face” tours with Elton John.

Billy’s music has always been a presence in my life, and i’m sure many others. Picking his best songs is difficult, but for his 65th birthday today, I narrowed it down to my top five.

Year: 1977

Album: The Stranger

Chart Peak: #17

Bruno Mars Halftime Show: Why It Was Just As Good As Beyonce’s
There was skepticism before Feb. 2 that a star like Bruno wouldn’t be able to handle a huge stage like the Super Bowl, but in a sparkly gold jacket and with a little help from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the flying Hawaiian proved all the haters wrong.

Okay, I know I’m committing blasphemy, and I know that Beyonce probably put out a hit for me the second I wrote this headline, but I have to stand up for what I believe in — on Feb. 2, Bruno Mars defied all odds and put on an amazing halftime show at Super Bowl Xlviii that met the standards set by Queen Bey last year.
