"Yellow Earth" is considered a classic for at least two reasons:
1) It helped announce to the public the significance of China's "fifth generation" of film-makers. For example Zhang Yimou, who was the cinematographer on this film, later became quite famous.
2) The Chinese "sixth generation" director Jia Zhang-Ke points to it as a critically important influence on his own work.
