Firstborn

Firstborn: Robert Downey Jr-Sarah Jessica Parker Romance Started Because of This Movie, Is It Worth Watching?
Image
Before her long and loving marriage to Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker had an eight-year-long relationship with Robert Downey Jr. They met when they were eighteen on the set of the movie Firstborn in 1984. Both Downey Jr. and Parker were popular celebrities of the Brat Pack era.

Firstborn is a coming-of-age drama that explores the life of teenager Jake Livingston, played by Christopher Collet. He is forced to grow up quickly when his mother begins to date and gets drawn into the life of a drug dealer, Sam.

Both Downey Jr. and Parker played minor roles in the film, as friends of Jake in high school. The two would go on to date for nearly seven years, becoming one of the era’s most beloved celebrity couples. Besides sparking the real-life romance of Downey Jr. and Parker, the film did not make much impact in Hollywood.

Despite not being a cinematic masterpiece,...

Robert Downey Jr. Couldn’t Marry His Ex-girlfriend After Dating for 7 Years Because of His Life’s Biggest Mistake
Image
Before becoming synonymous with MCU’s Tony Stark, and building his first Iron Man suit in a cave, Robert Downey Jr. was just a charming Hollywood heartthrob who fell madly in love with a rising star—none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. Long before her Sex and the City stardom and his superhero fame, Downey Jr. and Parker were the couples of the ’80s.

However, despite enjoying a relationship for seven whole years, Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t end up together. Because behind the glitz and glam, Downey Jr’s biggest enemy back then—his addiction—sadly ruined his love story with Parker. And that’s where one of Hollywood’s most promising romances crashed and burned.

Robert Downey Jr.: ‘Love was clearly not enough’ on Sarah Jessica Parker Romance That He Ruined Himself
Image
Believe it or not, Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. dated for seven years before calling it quits for good. However, their relationship was far from smooth sailing. Parker had to navigate the complexities of being with a man who was dealing with significant challenges during that time, largely due to his struggles with addiction.

Despite their deep connection, it was a tumultuous period say the least. Parker although stood by him through many of his battles, ultimately did decide to part ways.

The Doomed Love Story of Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Jessica Parker

The two met while co-starring in the 1984 movie Firstborn, and soon after, they moved to Los Angeles together. However, Robert Downey Jr.’s well-documented struggle with addiction was far from over during their relationship, he wouldn’t achieve sobriety until 2003.

Image

Hollywood’s Iron Man, aka Robert Downey Jr., earned his household name long before he became a crucial part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing the iconic role of Iron Man/Tony Stark. Downey rose to stardom with his role in Sherlock Holmes. However, his struggles with addiction were the reason for his downfall. Not only did his addiction cost him his career, but his relationship with Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker was equally turmoiled. Despite their downs, the couple still managed to find joy together.

Downey and Parker met on the set of the 1984 film, Firstborn. The former couple quickly started dating and moved in within eight weeks of their relationship. The couple dated for a few years before they separated in 1991 due to Downey’s substance addiction issues. But that doesn...

Star Trek: The Next Generation's Klingon Sister Villains Explained
Image
Introduced on Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Duras sisters became a thorn in the side of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the United Federation of Planets. Lursa (Barbara March) and B'Etor (Gwynyth Walsh) Duras made their debut in Tng's "Redemption" two-parter that bridged seasons 4 and 5. Their brother, Duras (Patrick Massett), had already appeared as an enemy of Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) in a couple of Tng episodes. Although the House of Duras held sway within the Klingon Empire, they gained notoriety for their dishonorable tactics.

Ja'rod, the father of Duras, Lursa, and B'Etor, betrayed the Klingons by providing the Romulans with the means to attack the Klingon colony on Khitomer. This resulted in the Khitomer Massacre and the deaths of 4,000 Klingon colonists. Although the Klingon High Council learned of Ja'rod's duplicity, they allowed Worf's father Mogh to take the blame to avoid a Klingon civil war. The Duras...

Wtf Happened to Peter Weller?
Image
The ever-articulate and principled Peter Weller has told us a lot about ourselves in his roles as an actor and director. Learning more about this gifted storyteller and true Renaissance man can tell us even more. But Weller hasn’t been seen in a major motion picture since 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, which ended a long silver screen hiatus. Is the man’s relative absence from the silver screen a product of demand, or might it be more down to his preference? Should his career be brought back into the mainstream spotlight like he was Murphy returning from the afterlife? Or is he busy doing different, more interesting things than being a badass in front of a camera? Let’s find out as we ask ourselves, Wtf happened to Peter Weller?

But first, let’s get a better feel for why the man has been so missed by starting at the beginning.

Star Trek's Greediest Aliens Have Cousins The Franchise Forgot
Image
DS9 transformed the Ferengi and gave them depth, making them one of the most beloved and hilarious alien species in Star Trek. The Dopterians are genetic cousins of the Ferengi, but their appearances on Star Trek were limited and they were portrayed as more opportunistic and unscrupulous than the Ferengi. The Dopterians could potentially become the Ferengi's villainous counterparts, like the Romulans are to the Vulcans, in future Star Trek episodes. They could form alliances to challenge the reformation of Ferengi culture under Grand Nagus Rom.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine introduced a genetic cousin of their greediest aliens, the Ferengi, and then forgot all about them. First conceived as a new big bad for Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Ferengi failed to properly take off until they became a core part of DS9's ensemble cast. By embracing their more comic aspects, DS9 made the Ferengi one of...

Arthur Schmidt, Oscar-Winning Film Editor on ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and ‘Forrest Gump,’ Dies at 86
Image
Arthur Schmidt, the two-time Oscar-winning film editor who collaborated with director Robert Zemeckis on 10 films, including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump and the Back to the Future trilogy, has died. He was 86.

Schmidt died Saturday of an unknown cause at his home in Santa Barbara, his brother Ron Schmidt told The Hollywood Reporter.

The second-generation film editor also cut three Mike Nichols features — The Fortune (1975), The Birdcage (1996) and Primary Colors (1998) — and two helmed by Michael Apted — Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980), for which he received his first Oscar nom, and Firstborn (1984).

His résumé over four decades included work on Marathon Man (1976), Jaws 2 (1978), Ruthless People (1986), Beaches (1988), The Rocketeer (1991), The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Congo (1995), and he was brought in for three months to help tidy up the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie in 2003.

Schmidt received his Academy Awards in 1989 for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and in 1995 for Forrest Gump,...

Why Star Trek Recast Worf's Son
Image
Star Trek recast Alexander Rozhenko multiple times due to the Klingon aging plot hole and the desire for different actors to bring something new to the role. The first actor to play Alexander, Jon Steuer, was deemed too shy to convincingly portray a young Klingon, leading to his recasting. Despite the challenges of Klingon aging, Alexander appeared to age normally between seasons 5 and 7 of The Next Generation, and a future version of him, played by James Sloyan, traveled back in time to convince Worf to send him to a Klingon training academy.

Star Trek recast the character of Alexander Rozhenko, son of Worf (Michael Dorn) multiple times in the 1990s, for a variety of reasons. First introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation as the son of Worf and half-Human diplomat K'Ehleyr (Suzie Plakson), Alexander had a fraught relationship with his father. By the time of Alexander's last appearance in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,...

American poet and former U.S. Poet Laureate Louise Gluck was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize for Literature Thursday, the world’s highest literary honor, “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal,” said the Nobel Committee.

She is the first American woman to win the prize since Toni Morrison in 1993 and one of only 16 women since the awards, established in the will of Alfred Nobel, began in 1901.

Nobel Committee chair Anders Olsson praised Gluck’s striving for clarity. “Glück seeks the universal, and in this she takes inspiration from myths and classical motifs, present in most of her works.”

Mats Malm, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, said in a video presentation Thursday, that he had informed Gluck of the award earlier in the day. “It came as surprise. A welcome one.

Christopher Collet in Firstborn (1984)
[Rewind] Firstborn Is a Forgotten 80s Gem
Christopher Collet in Firstborn (1984)
In the fall of 1985 a teen drama came to theaters titled Firstborn. There was only one problem. It wasn't a teen drama. In large part it focused on adults and their interpersonal relationships. This film was in many ways a near Academy Award winning look at the dynamics of a single mother, her kids, and what happens when her new boyfriend effects this close knit family. Quite simply, Firstborn was a very real film about a very real issue, that somehow sidetracked itself when it became a film that it wasn't. What happened you asked?

Somehow, amidst this deeply layered tale, Firstborn became a story of drugs, car chases, and a David and Goliath-like battle in a living room that would be bespeak the independent films of the 1990s. You know which ones I am talking about. Those films that didn't quite need, demand or even deserve a theatrical release,...

Video Essay. Almost Singing, Almost Dancing: Chantal Akerman's "Tomorrow We Move"
The twenty first entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin. Mubi will be showing Chantal Akerman's Tomorrow We Move (2004) from March 8 - April 7, 2017 in most countries around the world. Tomorrow We Move (2004) is Chantal Akerman’s most underrated film. A recent, ambiguous “tribute” to the director in Cineaste magazine dismissed most of her work in fiction filmmaking beyond the 1970s, and was especially down on those fictions involving music, comedy, love, passion, and obsession. So, into the bin go Night and Day (unmentioned in the article), Golden Eighties (“dated and silly”), La Captive (“elephantine, imitative, and strangely fake”), and Almayer’s Folly (sunk by that “terrible French actor Stanislas Merhar”). And Tomorrow we Move? It and A Couch in New York (1996) are merely “exercises that Akerman had to get out of her system.”There is frequently an element of self-portraiture in Akerman’s work,...

The Flash Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Borrowing Problems from the Future
Operation Save Iris is a go!

We have to thank Barry for his unexpected actions on The Flash Season 3 Episode 10 "Borrowing Problems from the Future."

He told the team the truth so they could work together on stopping Iris' murder instead of keeping it a secret for no reason.

Our little Flash is growing!

Minor sarcasm aside, it's hard not to be at least a little proud of Barry.

Especially since Iris clearly saw right through his half-answers when it came to the nightmares.

Moving in together, having sexy time, exchanging the l-word wouldn't mean much if Barry had chosen to keep her in the dark any longer.

I swear on both my parents' lives that I will protect you.

Barry Permalink: I swear on both my parents' lives that I will protect you. Added: January 24, 2017

How much did it hurt to watch Iris' face as the news slowly sank in?...

Former Couple Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. Will Be Sitting Together at the PCAs
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker and her ex-boyfriend Robert Downey Jr. will be seated next to each other at the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday night. Us Weekly obtained a photo of the seating chart, which shows the former Divorce star and Iron Man himself (who are both nominated) arranged just one seat apart; the chair between them will likely be filled by either Sarah Jessica's husband, Matthew Broderick, or Robert's wife, Susan. The pair famously began dating in 1984 after meeting on the set of Firstborn, and their breakup in 1991 was due in large part to Robert's drug problem. Despite the potential awkwardness of the seating arrangement, things will surely be Ok; in an interview with Howard Stern in 2015, Robert revealed that he and Sarah Jessica had a friendly reunion in NYC and put their past issues to bed. "I said everything I wanted to say," Robert explained. "There's this familiarity...
