Chaos: The Manson Murders (Errol Morris)
Over half a century later, what new information can be gleaned from the nights of August 9 and 10, 1969? Tom O’Neill and Dan Piepenbring’s riveting (if convoluted) book Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties––released in June 2019, between the Cannes premiere and theatrical release of Quentin Tarantino’s cathartic rewrite of that history––argues that while all the evidence of the murders has been gleaned, there’s a complex and knotty web of conspiracies for the motivations, some more plausible than others. To pare down the 528-page book to its most overarching theory, it postulates Manson may have been allowed (and perhaps even directed) by the CIA to concoct a reign...

One legend of cinema paid tribute to another on Sunday night as Morgan Freeman took to the stage at the Oscars and paid tribute to Gene Hackman. Having starred together in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, there could be no one better to deliver the kind of tribute that Hackman deserved. The speech was made ahead of the Academy's in memoriam section, which also featured tributes to James Earl Jones, Maggie Smith, David Lynch, and the many other stars that have been lost in the last year. In his speech, Freeman said:
“This week, our community lost a giant. And I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman. I had the pleasure of working alongside gene on two films, ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ Like everyone who ever shared a scene with him, I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work. Gene always said, ‘I don’t think about legacy.

The news of Gene Hackman’s death saw tributes from all generations of Hollywood pouring over the last week, and one of the latest comes from the actor who had the impossible task of taking over one of Hackman’s best-known roles. Michael Rosenbaum starred as Superman villain Lex Luthor in the TV series Smallville, decades after Hackman made the part iconic with his performance in Christopher Reeves’ comic book movies. In a personal tribute, the actor shared an image of a poster signed by Hackman, citing him as “the second best Lex Luthor.”
Hackman and his wife were discovered at their home towards the end of last week, and while the investigation into their death is still being investigated, the tragic news hit many Hollywood stars, and fans of Hackman’s huge legacy of work, really hard. The death of Gene Hackman and his wife has continued to dominate headlines as new details come to light about the strange circumstances surrounding the Oscar-winning actor’s passing. While the latest reports have said it could be “months” before the results of toxicology reports reveal exactly what caused the double death, and that of one of the couple’s dogs, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza has revealed a sad piece of information that suggests Hackman died much earlier than originally believed. As per Deadline, Mendoza said in a short press conference:
“An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr. Hackman's pacemaker. This revealed that his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025, I was advised that a more thorough investigation will be completed.”

The late Gene Hackman will be honored at the 97th Oscars despite the timing of his shocking death, which came just days before the ceremony is scheduled to be held. A source "who works on the show and has knowledge of the plans" revealed to TheWrap that a tribute to Hackman will be included during the broadcast. However, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences "declined to comment" on the situation when the publication reached out to confirm the news.
Hackman will likely be recognized during the Oscars' yearly In Memoriam tribute. The prolific actor won two Academy Awards over the course of his illustrious career. Hackman was first recognized for his incomparable portrayal of Popeye Doyle in The French Connection with a Best Actor Oscar. 21 years later, he walked away with another golden statue, but this time for Best Supporting Actor in Clint Eastwood’s classic Western, Unforgiven.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said Friday his department is still waiting for final autopsy and toxicology reports on the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, but has a fair idea of when the Oscar winner actually died.
An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr. Hackman pacemaker,” the Sheriff said at a short press conference today. “This revealed that his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025, I was advised that a more thorough investigation will be completed.”
Noting that getting final autopsy and toxicology reports “could take months,” Mendoza added that initial results seem to rule out carbon monoxide poisoning as a cause of the deaths of the 95-year-old Hackman, the 63-year-old Arakawa and one of their dogs. Amidst some conflicting information over the past 48 hours, the Sheriff said “there were no apparent signs of foul play” in the Hackmans’ deaths.

“Suspicious Enough”: Gene Hackman & Wife’s Deaths Probed By Cops; Scattered Pills Found, No Gas Leak
Gene Hackman’s death has raised enough suspicion among the Santa Fe police that they have obtained a search warrant for the Oscar winner’s home after the nonagenarian, his wife Betsy Arakawa and one of their dogs were found dead last night.
“At this time; the manner and cause of death pertaining to Eugene ‘Gene’ Allen Hackman and Betsy Arakawa passing is unknown,” said Santa Fe Sheriff’s department Det. Roy Arndt late Wednesday night in an affidavit submitted to a state judge just hours after the bodies were discovered in the couple’s longtime New Mexico home.
“Affiant believes that the circumstances surrounding the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another...

Gene Hackman and Nick Nolte are two of Hollywood's most prolific, recognizable actors with enduring acting careers. From being voted by his classmates at California's Pasadena Playhouse as "the least likely to succeed" alongside his classmate and fellow Academy Award-winning actor Dustin Hoffman, Hackman has proved his naive, formative judges wrong by gracing the screen at the highest possible level for over six decades. During his decorated career, he won two Oscars—Best Actor for his performance in William Friedkin's The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for his role in Clint Eastwood's Western Unforgiven — along with numerous nominations, which include his springboard role in the revolutionary 1967 crime movie classic Bonnie and Clyde. Hackman teamed up with fellow Academy-recognized Nolte for the beautiful, underseen, and intense 1983 guerrilla war film Under Fire. A fictional story based on true events, Under Fire provides an opportunity for movie lovers to explore...

Director Steven C. Miller is riding high after the release of his action-horror flick Werewolves this past weekend, and who can blame him? After all, he did get to work with Frank Grillo – one of the greats of the genre – but long before that, Miller also got the chance to work with another action star for what would be some of his final films: Bruce Willis. Now, he’s revealing what it was like to direct someone he grew up watching, which was an experience he calls "surreal."
Miller and Willis teamed up for three movies as the action hero was entering the twilight years of his career; 2015’s Extraction, 2016’s Marauders, and 2017’s First Kill. Speaking with Variety, the director told the outlet that the duo "had so much fun” together" and that they got along "beautifully." He would then go on to relay a story about Willis that...

Thanks to the explosive new movie Aftermath, two unlikely action stars have emerged on the scene by way of Dylan Sprouse and Mason Gooding, and for them, its hopefully just the start of things to come. Sprouse is perhaps best remembered for his role on the Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, while Gooding is recognized for his part in the Scream franchise as Chad Meeks-Martin, the nephew of Jamie Kennedys character, Randy.
Aftermath sees Sprouse as Eric Daniels, a war vet with Ptsd who gets trapped with his little sister on a bridge full of domestic terrorists led by Gooding. Recently, I wrote an article about movies that were surprisingly hard to find on streaming or Blu-ray, and one of the movies I mentioned was a little-remembered 1988 thriller called Shoot to Kill (aka Deadly Pursuit in the UK). The film was a decent box office hit in its day, but outside of a DVD release many years ago, it has sunk into obscurity.
This is a shame, as Shoot to Kill is a nifty little movie. After a few comments praised the film, I decided to revisit it for myself, as I honestly hadn’t seen it since the nineties and had no idea if it would hold up. To my surprise, not only did it hold up, but Shoot to Kill is a bit of a lost 80s action classic.

Noah Hazard loves his girlfriend Lea and their daughter Zita (Mila Rooms). But more than that, he loves his car, a gold Lexus bearing the vanity plate H4Z4RD, which was also the film’s original title. Indeed, Hazard opens with him spending so much time taking care of it that he’s almost late picking them up, something that gives Lea’s mother (Sylvie Nawasadio; Two Much for the Job) another reason to complain about him.
After dropping Zita off at school and Lea at work, he promises to pick the girl up at 3:30. He wants to go have the chip in his windshield fixed, but he has other obligations. He’s agreed to do a job for his not-so-bright cousin Carlos but...

A great many people appear to have come out of “Civil War,” Alex Garland’s a-house-divided-against-itself-can-kick-highly-equipped-military-ass dystopian combat thriller, feeling all shook up. They’re disturbed by it, unsettled by it. They experience the movie as if it were holding a violent mirror up to the simmering rage of America’s current political/spiritual/ ideological divide. Many critics have been seriously spooked by it, and so have columnists like the New York Times’ Michelle Goldberg. The filmmaker and Facebook pundit Paul Schrader said he was scared by it. And to judge from how many tickets the film is selling, in a $25 million opening weekend that bodes well for the future of adult dramas with topical resonance (on that score let’s all be grateful), I would guess that a solid portion of the audience was scared too.
But I was not scared by “Civil War,” even a little bit. Actually,...

Helldivers 2 is still going strong, around two months after its launch. Its player count is as strong as it could be, and its developers continue to make sure this game remains as fun to play as it was during its launch. They have been introducing new stuff to Helldivers 2 with every passing day.
As fun as this game is, it’s equally challenging, and fans often find themselves struggling to complete some missions. Sometimes they would see too much resistance, and other times enemy reinforcements would be too strong to defeat. And sometimes they would see the kind of challenge that they had never seen before; that’s what Helldivers 2 players are facing right now.
Helldivers 2’s new objectives are giving players a hard time

Def Leppard have announced a 40th anniversary expanded reissue of their seminal 1983 album Pyromania, arriving April 26th.
The legendary UK band is pulling all the stops for the reissue campaign, digging into the archives for previously unreleased demos, outtakes, rough mixes, and live recordings.
The 4-cd/Blu-Ray and 2-lp editions will include the original remastered album as well as these archival recordings, including a rare rough mix of “Photograph” with an unfinished vocal track and a previously “long lost” demo of “No You Can’t Do That” — an outtake and the “11th track” from the Pyromania sessions.
“Rediscovering dusty old cassettes which were brilliantly restored by [executive producer] Ronan [McHugh] and finding the long lost unfinished ’11th track’ was a journey only few of us are lucky enough to take,” remarked singer Joe Elliot in a press release. “What a trip!”

The legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager took Philip Kaufman, the writer/director of the lauded 1983 space race epic “The Right Stuff,” for a ride in his plane during production. And at one point the man who broke the sound barrier in 1947 turned over the controls to Kaufman as he also turned off the engine. “He thought it would scare me being one of the ‘Hollywood’ guys,” Kaufman told me in a 2003 L.A. Times interview. “I just sort of looked at him and smiled, because I knew there was something blessed about this man. The funny thing about Yeager is that he would drive out to the sets, particularly in the high desert, and he would not go above the speed limit. He was the fastest man alive, but he wouldn’t go over 55 because he knew how dangerous it was on the highway”

The action genre is surprisingly diverse, embracing everything from the Wild West to crime, sci-fi and horror. To Hulu's credit, the streaming platform has a strong selection of action movies and it covers all of these subgenres equally well.

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Paramount Network’s Ink Master and Oliver Peck have parted ways, just days after old photos of the reality-tv judge wearing blackface resurfaced via TMZ.
“After filming 13 great seasons of Ink Master, the producers and I have decided it’s best to part ways,” Peck said in a statement obtained by TVLine. “The offensive photos of me which recently surfaced from many years ago can only be a distraction to the amazing show I have loved being a part of and its many talented artists.

She’s not a Housewife, but Brielle Biermann certainly knows how to stir the Bravo pot.
As Real Housewives of Atlanta fans are well aware, a bitter feud recently erupted between Kim Zolciak-Biermann, 39, and NeNe Leakes, 49, after Zolciak-Biermann’s daughter Brielle alleged she found cockroaches in Leakes’ home. The incident will play out in detail this season, but in the meantime, Brielle, 20, is adding fuel to the fire by shading not just Leakes, but also her fellow Housewives Kenya Moore, 46, and Cynthia Bailey, 50. (Zolciak-Biermann has also been fighting with Moore this season, lunging at her in a recent episode after...

More than two months after a series of scandals rocked Texas-based theater chain Alamo Drafthouse and its annual film festival Fantastic Fest, the Austin festival has unveiled a brand-new board of directors led by some of the event’s most well-known female personalties and long-time employees. The new board will be led by Kristen Bell as chair, further cementing her place as an essential part of both the Alamo Drafthouse and Fantastic Fest, as she has been involved with both entities since the early-aughts and has held multiple leadership roles over those many years.
Bell will be joined on the board by actor and film buff Elijah Wood, film writer and programmer Kier-la Janisse, film curator and producer Peter Kuplowsky, and producer Suki-Rose Simakis.

So far, Comcast investors aren’t worried about losing the host of NBC’s long-running “Today” morning show. Shares of NBC parent company Comcast jumped 4 percent on Wednesday morning to nearly $38 a share in the hours after NBC announced it had fired “Today” show host Matt Lauer for “”inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.” NBC — which falls under the Comcast banner — has routinely won the coveted ages 25-54 demographic for its morning shows. The 59-year-old Lauer had been with the “Today” show for 23 years, and co-hosted alongside Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and weatherman Al Roker. Also Read: Trump Under Fire for.

Warning: Spoiler alert! Do not proceed if you haven’t watched Wednesday’s episode of Chicago P.D.
One of Chicago P.D.’s own is headed down a dangerous path.
On Wednesday’s episode, titled “Care Under Fire,” Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) goes undercover to stop an ex-military kidnapping crew from killing an innocent child, which dredges up demons from his past. Leaning on his past Ranger experience, Halstead persuades Voight (Jason Beghe) to let him take lead on the mission. Things go terribly awry when the man Halstead befriends, a fellow ex-Ranger, is shot dead and he lies to his sister, Camila (guest star Anabelle Acosta) -- with whom he becomes romantically entangled -- about his involvement.
“He’s been downward spiraling since episode one of this season after killing that little girl, it exposed him to some stuff that he hadn’t dealt and that he’s been burying. We’ve seen him...
