Celebrating the Slimy Thrills of ‘Hell Comes to Frogtown’
Image
We’ve covered quite a few post-apocalyptic films in previous editions of Horror Adjacent, and I think there’s a simple reason for that. No matter how light-hearted the rest of the movie is, death and destruction on a global scale will always be a frightening concept – especially when you consider that our species is actually capable of initiating a nuclear holocaust at any moment.

However, some movies are better at masking these darker elements than others, and today I’d like to discuss a particularly odd picture that’s been referred to as both a criminally underrated cult classic and a perfect example of so-bad-it’s-good cinema in equal measure. Naturally, I’m referring to Donald G. Jackson and R.J. Kizer’s 1989 Roddy Piper vehicle, Hell Comes to Frogtown, a post-apocalyptic thriller that somehow blends classic monster movies, raunchy sex comedies and Mad Max into a single ridiculous package.

Brian Cox Discusses Potential Return as William Stryker in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’: “I Haven’t Heard about It”
Image
If you’ve been paying attention, you know the biggest superhero movie of the year, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ is almost here. It’s bringing Deadpool into the MCU and aims to restore fans’ faith after a few disappointing releases in the past two years.

Apart from being a Deadpool flick, fans are hyped about the possible cameos and appearances from different characters, with rumors swirling about over 20 people making a return, although only a few are seen in the trailers.

There were also rumors suggesting that Brian Cox might reprise his role as William Stryker in the film. Cox portrayed the antagonist in ‘X2’ before the role was taken over by Danny Huston in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’ In the movies, Stryker is depicted as a military scientist who conducts experiments on mutants to develop potent weapons and control methods. Cox addressed the speculation about his potential return in an interview with The Starting Line Podcast.

Kabal and D’Vorah have been Revealed for Mortal Kombat 11
NetherRealm Studios has revealed Kabal and D'Vorah will be returning in Mortal Kombat 11 and I think I can die happy!

During the Mortal Kombat "Kombat Kast" Livestream event NetherRealm Studios revealed Kabal would be making his return to the series. The last time we saw Kabal was during the events of Mortal Kombat 9, in which we saw a lot of main roaster characters die in the story mode of the game. Those chacters are Kabal, Jax, Jade, Kitana, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Sindel, Smoke, Shao Kahn, Sub-Zero, and Stryker! Now that is a lot of character that we hope to see return, but the one of the main roaster holders wanted back by fans was the Blade wielding Kabal.

At the same time of the Kombat Kast, Microsoft was doing their Inside Xbox Livestream event and talked about the recent Mortal Kombat Reveal event. Ed Boon then...

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Reveals Jean Grey Reshoots With Bts Pic
X-Men: Dark Phoenix may or may not be in big trouble. There’ve been persistent rumors that Fox is extremely unhappy with the cut director Simon Kinberg turned in, mandating extensive reshoots including a whole new third act (some even claim the entire film’s being reshot).

Originally scheduled to release in November, the pic’s been delayed until 2019 and for a while, many were convinced that the project was on the verge of being canned for good. Given that they’ve embarked on those reshoots, it seems that the doomsday scenario for the movie isn’t going to come to pass, but it still leaves Dark Phoenix with a big, ominous question mark hanging over it.

Now, in a clear indication from Kinberg that those reshoots are underway, he’s shared a photo on his Instagram account. Sadly, this does not show everyone’s favorite mutants in costume using...

Pa exploitation maestro Cirio H. Santiago dead at 72
Somewhere in my near future there is a post-apocalyptic all-nighter happening where I play nothing but the films of Cirio H. Santiago. Santiago's films have brought me much joy over the years and being able to share news of his ongoing love affair with our favorite genre will be missed around here. He was responsible for directing over 75 productions (many for Roger Corman) and producing even more. Recently, Santiago was working on a sequel to Stryker called Road Raiders. I haven't been able to track down any info on how his untimely death might affect the film's production but we'll be sure to keep you posted. Until then, head through the break where you'll find a whole bunch of clips and trailers from his work. I highly encourage you to take a break from your hectic day and dive into the crazy fun worlds of Cirio H. Santiago for a few minutes.

The world just became a little less trashy (in a bad way) - Cirio Santiago dead at 72
Post-apocalyptic impresario Cirio Santiago, perhaps responsible for more Mad Max-inspired madness than any other filmmaker, passed away on Friday, September 26th at the age of 72 from lung cancer. A veteran of the Roger Corman ranks, Santiago has been canonized by Quentin Tarantino (citing Santiago’s work as one of the many influences on his Kill Bill pictures) and was set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Film Academy of the Philippines next month.

He was currently in production on a sequel to one of his better know Max riffs, Stryker, to be titled Road Raiders. No word on whether and how that project may now be completed.

Why not track down a copy of Wheels of Fire or Future Hunters and pay tribute to a low-budget legend?...
