CBS Potentially Turning to Gibbs for NCIS Ratings Could Stall the Momentum Alden Parker Created
Image
Mark Harmon‘s Leroy Jethro Gibbs left NCIS in the fourth episode of the nineteenth season. Before he left, the show introduced a capable leader for the McRt team in FBI Special Agent Alden Parker. Gary Cole’s character may have initially come across as a hindrance in Gibbs’s way of going after the evil corporation Sonoma.

However, we immediately cozied up to him after he threw his FBI career on the line for Gibbs and got fired after leaving Gibbs to live a peaceful life in Alaska. By the time Director Vance offered up the position to Parker, at least some of the fans were happy with the decision. Since then, Cole has completed four seasons of NCIS without Harmon’s Gibbs.

Not many fans were impressed with the 22nd season of the show that came after a shortened 21st season. It had no high-stakes storyline that concluded on a satisfactory note.

Ana de Armas’ Age When Mission Impossible 1 Came Out: Her Age Difference With Tom Cruise Sparks Discomfort
Image
Ana de Armas and Tom Cruise are currently working on their upcoming movie Deeper, all the while making rounds on the internet as rumors about their reportedly being romantically involved call up debates for discussion. This is because of the age gap between the two, which is notably 26 years since Cruise is 63, while de Armas is 37.

Recently, the two co-stars were spotted together holding hands while on a weekend getaway together in Vermont, seemingly confirming all the relationship rumors surrounding them, per TMZ (more on this later). This had a fan @KantInEastt pointing out on X that the Ballerina actress was actually in kindergarten when the Mission: Impossible alum’s first movie in the saga came out almost three decades ago.

The 10 Greatest Three-Movie Runs by an Actor Ever
Image
What is the greatest three-movie run by an actor? Well, first, let me define what I mean by greatest, and what I mean by three-movie run. For my purposes, “greatest” is measured by an equal consideration of movie quality, performance quality, box office, and pop culture relevance. In other words, the films/performances have to be good and well-known. Now, a three-movie run just means three consecutive films in an actor’s filmography. I’m going based on release date, so sometimes having multiple films in a year removes an actor from contention.

So, a good three-movie run is not easy to pull off.. There are a lot of well-known actors who don’t even sniff this list. Here are a few actors you won’t see in the Top 10: Matt Damon, Ethan Hawke, Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey Bradley Cooper. I tried to get a Jack Nicholson 1970’s run on the list,...

Rebecca De Mornay Reveals Why Stephen King Hated Shelley Duvall's 'The Shining' Performance
Image
More than 40 years after starring alongside Tom Cruise in Risky Business, Rebecca De Mornay is still stealing scenes on the big screen. Her new thriller Saint Clare is a far cry from the 1983 comedy classic, being a thriller and all, but De Mornay is no stranger to the dark and edgy stuff. Back in 1997, she portrayed Wendy Torrance in Stephen King's own adaptation of his iconic novel The Shining. This time, it was for the small screen, released on ABC in three episodes, and starkly different from Stanley Kubrick's film version that hit theaters in 1980. MovieWeb recently spoke with De Mornay while she was promoting her new movie. The longtime actress also took time to reflect on her experience working with King and portraying the iconic character Wendy Torrance that had been tackled by the late Shelley Duvall in Kubrick's film. De Mornay also offered insight into...

How a Knee Injury Led Tom Cruise To Acting: The Wild, Unexpected Twist That Changed Hollywood Forever
Image
How a Knee Injury in High School Accidentally Made Tom Cruise a Movie Star (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Before Tom Cruise became the face of Mission: Impossible, before the stunts, the billion-dollar box office hauls, or even the megawatt smile, there was just a kid with a dream to wrestle. Acting wasn’t the plan. Wrestling was.

But one knee injury flipped the entire script.

Cruise, born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, had anything but a steady childhood. He bounced from school to school, struggled with dyslexia, and admitted to People in 2003 that he was a “functional illiterate.” Sports became his outlet. Baseball, soccer, football, he played them all. But it was wrestling that truly gave him direction.

His high school wrestling captain, Tom Jarrett, once told The Daily Mail, “He had times where he was struggling to be accepted. With wrestling, you made your own mark at school… He really wanted...

Graydon’s Grand Old Party: The Making of Hollywood’s Biggest Bash
Image
This story is an excerpt from Empire of the Elite, a blockbuster new history of Condé Nast by New York Times reporter Michael Grynbaum.

Since 1964, Irving “Swifty” Lazar had hosted Hollywood’s premier see-and-be-seen soiree, an annual Academy Awards watch party that by the early 1990s was held at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago. Swifty was a legendary talent agent who had represented icons like Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. He masterminded his party like a Lilliputian Stalin, enforcing a seating chart that separated A-listers from B-listers and chastising guests who attempted to stand up and use the restroom during the ceremony. Entry was coveted and sternly policed; in 1983, on assignment for Time, Graydon Carter himself donned a tuxedo and tried to sweet-talk his way past the door. The valet refused to even park his car.

When Swifty died in 1993, Graydon — recently anointed as the new editor of Vanity Fair — seized his chance.

Tom Cruise Stands Alone in Top 10 Highest-Grossing Actors Without a Marvel Role
Image
Tom Cruise hasn’t played a superhero, but he’s still one of the biggest box office stars in movie history.

While actors like Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Samuel L. Jackson have spent years inside the Marvel universe, Cruise has taken a totally different path, and it’s worked just as well. As of this weekend, Cruise is still one of the top 10 highest-grossing actors of all time. According to new box office numbers following the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth, the list is packed with names from Marvel films, except for him.

Everyone else in the top ten has been in at least one Marvel project. Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, Vin Diesel, and others all boosted their numbers with movies like Avengers: Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more. Scarlett Johansson just reached the number one spot, passing Downey Jr. and Jackson with a career total of over $14.9 billion,...

"That Conflict Is Very Realistic": Hazing Incident & Trial In Tom Cruise's Iconic $243M Legal Movie Gets Perfect Score From Marine Corps Leader
Image
Tom Cruise, often considered the last Hollywood movie star, has been an iconic presence in the industry since the '80s, when he debuted in a couple of minor roles before landing his first lead role in Losin' It in 1982. A year later, Risky Business changed his career, and he became one of Hollywood's most bankable leading men.

1986's Top Gun, a memorable 1980s movie associated with one song, became his highest-grossing film until then, and a decade later, he starred in the movie that would eventually define his career. Cruise is known today for his death-defying stunts, especially in the Mission: Impossible movies. However, the versatile actor had a much more diverse filmography before the 2010s.

The '80s, '90s, and 2000s saw Tom Cruise deliver memorable and compelling dramatic, romantic, and comedic performances. However, his star persona will always be associated with realism because he performs the...

Days of Thunder: Before F1 rocked us, Tom Cruise took us for a ride
Image
This weekend sees the release of F1, a movie which reunites some of the important creatives before Top Gun: Maverick, notably director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Starring Brad Pitt, it feels very much like a Tom Cruise movie, minus Tom Cruise, but the superstar has been outspoken in his support of the project. In fact, he took to his Instagram today to pen a tribute to both F1 and his own attempt at racing epic, Days of Thunder, which turns thirty-five this week.

A post shared by Tom Cruise (@tomcruise)

1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office,...

The Jerry Maguire Scene Where Renée Zellweger Was Scared to Death to Work With Tom Cruise
Image
In Tom Cruise’s star-studded resume, there are numerous explosive action, sci-fi, and thriller blockbusters and very few rom-coms. But despite being in the minority, his one flick with Renée Zellweger was such an epic masterpiece and fared so well that very few of his other projects have managed to live up to it: Jerry Maguire.

A name that pretty much every movie buff is very well aware of, Cruise’s said rom-com from 1996 didn’t take long to become a cult classic, thanks to the spectacular performance from the cast and crew. But, surprisingly, despite her own outstanding portrayal, Zellweger was actually ‘scared to death’ to work with Cruise in one scene!

Image
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (Photo Credit – Instagram/Prime Video)

There’s Hollywood royalty, and then there’s Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The two titans have created immense legacies, with filmographies that age not just well, but have become legends. Both are at the top of the food chain in the entertainment business, and their names have shone like the sun for decades in cinema. You couldn’t have two more bankable stars, critical darlings, and well, icons of fashion. Also, not to mention, they both contain a wonderful mystique that makes them irresistible.

The Role Brad Pitt Played That Tom Cruise Almost Took Over

The last time Cruise and Pitt shared screen time was in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire. Since then, a lot has changed in the movie industry, and the two leading men mostly kept their distance from each other until, almost, one ‘curious’ case...

Why Is Tom Cruise Getting an Honorary Oscar? Details Inside
Image
It finally happened. Tom Cruise is getting an Oscar. No, not for sprinting across rooftops in Mission: Impossible or hanging off planes mid-flight. We’re talking about an Honorary Oscar, the kind the Academy gives when they realize someone’s been carrying Hollywood on their back for four decades and somehow still has perfect hair.

At 62, Cruise is a living action figure who’s not just an actor but a full-blown cinematic force. He’s the guy who revived theaters post-pandemic with Top Gun: Maverick, still does his own death-defying stunts, and treats blockbuster filmmaking like high art. Yet, despite four Oscar nominations, the gold statue kept slipping through his fingers until now.

So what finally pushed the Academy to give Cruise his flowers? Was it the box office domination? The industry loyalty? Or just the fact that no one else jumps off cliffs and sells tickets like he does?...

‘We Were Liars’ Stars Joseph Zada and Esther McGregor Talk Bringing E. Lockhart’s Characters To Life To Be “Authors Of Their Own Story”

Spoiler Alert: This piece lightly spoils the entirety of We Were Liars now streaming on Prime Video.

Alongside Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and Gatwick Patil (Shubham Maheshwari), Esther McGregor’s Mirren Sinclair Sheffield and Joseph Zada’s Johnny Sinclair Dennis make up the core four group in Prime Video’s television adaptation of We Were Liars, based on the bestselling book by E. Lockhart.

In Lockhart’s book, told from the perspective of Cadence, or Cady as her cousins Mirren and Jonny and best friend Gat affectionately call her, the other three liars are mainly constructed from memories that Cadence constantly looks back on, but she herself is an unreliable narrator because of a traumatic head injury that has left her with amnesia about the circumstances leading up to how she got hurt. The show takes the characters out of Lockhart’s and Cadence’s minds and brings...

Tom Cruise finally gets his (honorary) Oscar moment: Here’s his complete awards history
Image
Tom Cruise's next mission, should he choose to accept it, will be to collect an honorary Oscar.

The 62-year-old actor has been announced as one of the recipients of the 2025 Governors Awards alongside choreographer-artist Debbie Allen, production designer Wynn Thomas, and singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, the latter of whom will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The awards will be handed out on Nov. 16 in Los Angeles.

Cruise rose to fame in the 1980s as the star of several teen movies before blowing up in Top Gun (1986) and becoming one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. He followed with a string of popcorn films that included Interview With the Vampire (1994), Minority Report (2002), War of the Worlds (2005), and the Mission: Impossible franchise (eight films between 2000 and 2025). While those types of films rarely result in trophy wins, Cruise still has a storied awards history that goes back decades.

Tom Cruise movies: 17 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
With a film career that spans over four decades, Tom Cruise is arguably the biggest movie star of this generation. Cruise is associated with so many iconic film moments -- the dance in "Risky Business," the "need for speed" chant in "Top Gun," and "Show me the money!" in "Jerry Maguire," among many others -- that it seems like he's been a movie star forever.

He has been a critical darling through parts of his career but has mainly focused on blockbusters (acclaimed or not). He has received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor in "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) and "Jerry Maguire" (1996) plus another as Best Supporting Actor in "Magnolia" (1999). Those are the three performances that provided him with Golden Globe wins. His other four nominations with the Hollywood Foreign Press were for "Risky Business" (1983), "A Few Good Men" (1992), "The Last Samurai" (2003) and "Tropic Thunder" (2008). Many of these...

Tom Cruise's First Major Project Is An '80s Military Movie With A Mandalorian Villain
Image
If I asked you to think of a Tom Cruise movie, you might suggest an entry from the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, or "Risky Business," or "Tropic Thunder" if you're trying to be clever by finding the less obvious option. If I asked for a Tom Cruise movie about the military, you would almost certainly say "Top Gun." However, Cruise's first major acting role was a military movie you probably haven't heard of: "Taps."

While "Risky Business" was the first film led by Cruise, "Taps" was the first movie in which he had a significant speaking part. Released in 1981, the film set in a military school faced with the threat of closure featured the future "Mission: Impossible" star as Cadet Captain David Shawn. Appearing alongside him was a young Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon in "The Mandalorian") as Cadet Captain J.C. Pierce.

The movie saw the cadets at Bunker Hill Military...

Tom Cruise to Be Celebrated at MoMI with ‘Above and Beyond’ Retrospective Festival
Image
Patron saint of theaters Tom Cruise will be at the center of a well-deserved retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI). IndieWire can announce that starting June 20, 22 of Cruise’s most iconic films will screen at the museum. Titled “Tom Cruise, Above and Beyond,” the retrospective festival will “capture the full range of Cruise’s charismatic star performances from the 1980s to present,” as the description teases. “Tom Cruise has been so central to our conception of Hollywood for so many decades that he’s more than a movie star — he encourages us to ask: what is it that makes a movie star? Cruise’s entire captivating career speaks to his legacy as a singular movie star, and all the contradictions— of mystery and emotional transparency, of relatability and untouchability, of strength and vulnerability— that entails.”

From ’80s classics such as “Risky Business,” “Top Gun,” “Cocktail,” and “The Color of Money...

Hayley Atwell’s Favorite Ever Tom Cruise Movie Is a Streaming Hit This Month
Image
Tom Cruise has such a long and illustrious catalog of beloved movies, from the likes of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut to Risky Business, that it can often be difficult to pick a favorite. Never one to back down from a challenge, Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning co-star Hayley Atwell has had her say, moving away from the blockbuster action franchise and, instead, naming the 1996 romantic sports drama, Jerry Maguire, as her favorite.

A five-time Academy Award nominee and featuring one of Cruise's most memorable performances, Jerry Maguire is an inspired choice from Atwell, and it seems the current population of streaming fans agrees. As of May 28, and amid the Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning hype, Jerry Maguire has landed in the Top 10 most-streamed movies on Pluto TV in the US. Jerry Maguire joins an eye-catching list of other titles in the top 10, which includes three Mission: Impossible movies,...

‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Overtakes Tom Cruise’s 15% Rotten Tomatoes Franchise-Killer Monster Movie
Image
Having completed a full week of release in theaters worldwide, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has grossed over $200 million worldwide — or, in other words, half of its mammoth reported budget of $400 million. It still has a long way to go before it can be counted as a success, though. Going by the rule of thumb, The Final Reckoningwould need to gross around $800 million worldwide just to break even; this would make it the second-biggest film of star Tom Cruise's career, behind only Top Gun: Maverick. The Final Reckoning has already overtaken several of Cruise's past hits in the one week that it has played in theaters.

The latest to be overtaken were the World War II thriller Valkyrie and the mind-bender Vanilla Sky. Next on the list are Jack Reacher and Collateral, both of which made $217 million globally. During the course of its run, The Final Reckoning...

Simon Pegg Regrets Roasting Jar Jar Binks
Image
Long before he was battling evil god-like computer programs with the star of Risky Business, Simon Pegg starred alongside Jessica Hynes in the British sitcom Spaced. The show was so beloved, over a thousand fans agreed to act like zombies in Shaun of the Dead for absolutely no pay.

One of the most memorable aspects of Spaced was Pegg’s character Tim’s love of Star Wars. But in the second season, his disappointment in the relatively recently-released Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace took him to some dark places, such as burning all of his Star Wars merch on a funeral pyre.

And verbally abusing a small child who simply wanted to purchase a Jar Jar Binks toy.

But these days, Pegg feels as though he may have gone a little too far in his prequel-bashing.

During a recent video interview with Variety, Pegg discussed Spaced’s Star Wars hostility, specifically...

‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Has Already Grossed Over Three Times As Much as Tom Cruise’s 43% Rotten Tomatoes Musical Bomb
Image
In under a week of release, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has not only set franchise records, but it has also overtaken the lifetime earnings of several of star Tom Cruise's past movies. Cruise has been focused mainly on franchise films in the last decade or so, but among the final standalone movies that he appeared in was 2012's musical adaptation, Rock of Ages. Directed by Adam Shankman, Rock of Ages also happens to be Cruise's last outright bomb. It did so poorly, in fact, that The Final Reckoning has already out-grossed it three times over, in just five days of release.

Rock of Agesconcluded its global box office run with just over $60 million, against a reported budget of $75 million. Almost by design, Cruise stood out for his flamboyant performance as the rocker Stacee Jaxx. Just a few years prior, he'd appeared in a memorable cameo in Tropic Thunder,...

9-1-1 Season 8 Report Card: A Rocky Road with Flashes of Brilliance
Image
To say 9-1-1 Season 8 was controversial would be the understatement of the century.

The season started with another high-flying, multi-part emergency that again put Athena in the thick of things. The result was an exciting start to the season, but from there, things meandered for a bit outside of one bright spot.

The second half of the season had more multi-part episodes than necessary, one gigantic death, and closed on a whimper.

(Disney/Christopher Willard)

With eight seasons under its belt, it’s reasonable to expect change, but certain changes may not have improved the show, and that’s where the confusion and frustration set in.

By raising the stakes, you can introduce new storylines and change the status quo, but it shouldn’t cause irreparable harm to the series in the process.

'A Wild Comedy of Catastrophic Proportions': Birdman Director Teases Upcoming Tom Cruise Film
Image
Tom Cruise marks his anticipated Warner Bros. return with an untitled collaboration alongside decorated filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Though it was thought the upcoming project would see Cruise play an all-conquering global figure looking to prove he's the world's savior, Iñárritu suggests the movie isn't nearly as serious as it sounds.

Speaking with Deadline at the Cannes Film Festival about his film with Cruise, which recently wrapped production in London after beginning shooting last fall, Iñárritu insisted the movie is a "wild comedy" that proves Cruise's acting range and is a "character-driven" film that will engage audiences. "No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so fucking impressed and happy," the Oscar-winning director said.

Breaking Baz: Paula Wagner On Why Tom Cruise Remains A Shining Star, Her Part In The ‘Mission: Impossible’ Franchise, A New Film About John Fogerty & Creedence, And The Art Of Teaching Disruption
Image
Exclusive: Paula Wagner, the onetime budding actress-turned-superagent-turned studio owner in partnership with Tom Cruise, who helped produce the first three Mission: Impossible movies, was asked a question several years ago by students at DePaul University in Chicago that she was amply qualified to answer: What is a star?

A star, Wagner explained that day, “lights up the sky and gives heat and light and energy, and then they burn out.”

Greta Garbo, she observed, “retired at 30.”

Where does Wagner place Cruise, I ask, just as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was having its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Tom Cruise Advises Next Generation to Learn What Isn’t Taught in Film School: “Understand the Lens and What It Can Do”
Image
Tom Cruise has some key advice for the next wave of actors.

As one of the biggest movie stars in the world, he didn’t attend film school or have a technically trained background. Instead, Cruise told the audience on Monday while receiving the British Film Institute Fellowship honor that he learned his skills by watching movies.

And Cruise encourages the next generation of talent to focus on what goes into making a movie. “It is important to understand the tools around you. There is tech,” he said. “It is like understanding the stage as an actor but for a lot of artists it is not taught in film school: how to understand the lens and what it can do, and why there is eye movement and recognize the effect it has.”

The Risky Business star continued, “I always tell actors, ‘Spend time in the editing room, produce a movie,...

Tom Cruise Reveals How He Landed Iconic Movie Role
Image
Tom Cruise has revealed the unusual way he landed his role in the classic movie Rain Man. The 1988 comedy-drama starred Cruise alongside Dustin Hoffman, and helped further cement Cruise in the public eye.

Cruise looked back on the film during an interview with Sight & Sound Magazine, in which he revealed that his sister Cass was instrumental in him eventually playing Charlie. The wheels for Rain Man were set in motion when Cass spotted Dustin Hoffman while she and Cruise were out for dinner in New York. "I met Hoffman when he was doing Death of a Salesman [on Broadway]. My sister was like, 'There’s Dustin Hoffman, go up and say hello to him,'" he remembered. "I’m like, 'I am not gonna go up to Dustin Hoffman.' And my sister says, 'If you don’t go up and say hello to him, I’m going to say hello to him,...
