From maverick director Roman Polanski comes one of the most unusual and unsettling studio thrillers of the 1970s: The Tenant. Adapted from Roland Topor’s cult novel, Polanski casts himself in the lead, offering a uniquely demented and outrageously funny performance, and is supported by Melvyn Douglas (The Changeling), Shelly Winters, and Isabelle Adjani (Possession).
Featuring cinematography by two-time Oscar winner Sven Nykvist (Cries and Whispers) along with an original score by acclaimed composer Philippe Sarde (La Grande Bouffe), Vinegar Syndrome presents the 4K Uhd debut of The Tenant, newly and exclusively restored in 4K from its original camera negative and featuring a wide array of new and archival...

Hollywood’s biggest night will apparently be without one of its brightest category stars.
Tom Fleischman, a longtime rerecording mixer who has frequently worked with director Martin Scorsese, has reportedly resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) over its plan to avoid fully televising eight categories at this year’s Academy Awards presentations. The Oscar curtailed television plans have been severely criticized by members and the associated guilds.
AMPAS has said it will present its awards for documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound before this year’s broadcast. The awards presentation for those categories will have clips inserted nto the subsequent live telecast.
Fleischman won an Oscar for Scorsese’s Hugo and was also nominated for Jonathan Demme’s Silence of the Lambs, Warren Beatty’s Reds and Scorsese’s The Aviator and Gangs of New York.

With the two most formidable queens freshly ejected from the competition, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. the World is now basically a crapshoot, with all five of the remaining contestants sharing an equal shot at the crown. (Yes, even Jujubee, assuming she decides to start putting in a little effort.)
Episode 5 begins with a still-shaking Blu Hydrangea explaining why she decided to give Pangina Heals the chop. And unlike Pangina, Blu is actually honest about her choice: “She took the same decision that I took with Jimbo. She sent home her strongest competition.” (See how easy that was?) Baga Chipz,...

Few movements in the genre emerge as more uniquely localized to a central country than the Hong Kong black magic scene. This started in 1975 with the aptly-named Black Magic from director Ho Meng-hua that focused on bizarre occult rituals, gross-out sequences of shock horror, and wild special effects. Despite Kuei Chih-hung reaching a zenith in the genre with the seminal The Boxer’s Omen several years later, this earlier effort is no less impressive, enjoyable and outright revolting at times.

TributeJayan, known for performing daredevil sequences without a stunt double, died while attempting a helicopter fight scene on this day in 1980.CrisPhoto Courtesy - Sreekumaran Thampy / FacebookAt 7.30 that Sunday evening, Rita received a call from her sister. Between suppressed sobs, the teen told Rita that actor Jayan was no more. Rita didn’t believe her. There had been hoaxes like these before. The next morning, she waited for the newspaper. It was raining that day and the newspaper did not come to her doorstep. It was only in the evening she discovered it tucked into the mailbox. And there it was, in big black headlines – Jayan really was dead, at the age of 41. The date was November 16, 1980, a Sunday. “To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of Jayan when he was alive. I didn’t understand what the craze was all about. But the morning after he died,...

That’s not a metaphor, either; with every step, they drew nearer to a perpetually raging fire surrounded by empties called the Blaze of (ha) Gory. Did anyone wind up getting burned? Read on.

A small but impactful revolution is narrated with grace and a dose of sense of humour in South Korean patriotic hit “Mal-Mo-e: The Secret Mission” which tells another story revolving around the Japanese occupation, from a seemingly unexplored point of view. This directorial debut of Eom Yoo-na, marked the transition from successful writer of “A Taxi Driver” to the director’s chair, and landed in theatres just before the 100th anniversary of the March First Movement, or the “Sam-il”, a day celebrating the beginning of Korea’s national independence movement from Japan.

Channel 4 has announced that it is rebooting its iconic morning show The Big Breakfast after an 18-year hiatus, with BAFTA-winning British comedian Mo Gilligan hosting a one-off special.
The revival will form part of a Black Takeover Day in 2021, during which the British broadcaster will mark a year since the international protests and debates sparked by the killing of George Floyd on May 25.

The original show ran for 10 years and launched the careers of countless television executives, as well as catapulting the likes of Chris Evans to stardom. Evans went on to become the BBC’s highest-paid star, which included presenting the Radio 2 breakfast show and...

Rising from the rubble of the Bosnian War to become one of Southeastern Europe’s leading film and TV industry events, the Sarajevo Film Festival has plenty to celebrate as it marks its 25th edition this year.
The festival was established in 1995 during the four-year siege of Sarajevo as part of an effort to help the reconstruction of society and save the cosmopolitan spirit of the city. Today Sarajevo not only plays a vital role for the region’s growing film and TV industries, it is also becoming an increasingly significant conduit to global partners in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.
“From the very start, we have been inspired by art and it helped us create new values and break the existing social and cultural barriers,” Sarajevo Film Festival director Mirsad Purivatra says.
Indeed, Unesco is honoring the fest this year for its promotion of “dialogue and tolerance through the arts.

As the 17th season of “American Idol” premieres on Sunday, March 3, we remember those six contestants who have left us since the reality TV show began in 2002. Some were fan favorites. Others were memorable oddballs who often made the wrong kind of impression. But all contributed in some way to making “American Idol” what it is today. Those who saw Sunday’s Doctor Who episode will probably be wondering when, not if, we’re going to lay eyes on time-meddling teddy boy Krasko again. While the Doctor and her companions might have foiled his plan to prevent Rosa Parks from kicking off the Civil Rights Movement, being blasted into past with his own time displacement weapon will probably prove to be a setback rather than an end for him. After all, if you have a villain who wants to mess with the course of history, then the last place they should be is in the distant past.
But Krasko was such an enigmatic antagonist that some fans have started to dig a little deeper and wonder whether he might be a new incarnation of someone we’ve seen before. One theory I think we can discard right away is that this is a version of Captain Jack Harkness.

The following contains spoilers for Sharp Objects.
If you've been watching HBO's chilling miniseries Sharp Objects, then you're well aware that something seedy is going on in Wind Gap, Mo - and something even seedier is going on in the Preaker-Crellin household. Protagonist Camille has family issues that make your average dysfunctional clan look like the Brady Bunch, and one of the most mysterious leaves on Camille's family tree belongs to her younger half-sister, Amma.
Amma Crellin - a two-faced teen who plays her narcissistic mother's (Adora) baby doll by day and hell-on-wheels high school bully by night - is precisely the sort of love-to-hate character we haven't seen since Joffrey on Game of Thrones. Whether she's throwing a childlike fit about imperfect upholstery in her remarkably spooky dollhouse, taking unsettling pleasure in observing nursing piglets being raised for slaughter, or sticking a lollipop in her older sister's hair after publicly berating her,...

HBO's latest new series, Sharp Objects, is the closest onscreen adaptation to an image I've had in my head while reading a book maybe ever. That includes its selection of absolute hunk Chris Messina to play Richard Willis, a Kansas City detective sent to investigate a potential serial murder case in Wind Gap, Mo. When the show's main character, journalist Camille Preaker (Amy Adams), first runs into Detective Willis in the novel, I immediately felt that he'd be effortlessly handsome - despite being kind of an assh*le at first - which is exactly the kind of role Messina thrives in, let's be real.
If you, too, felt like your lust for Detective Willis came on stronger than a Missouri heatwave, it may be because you've crushed on Messina before. The 43-year-old has been acting for quite some time, starring most notably in The Mindy Project as Mindy's love interest,...

Catherine wielded supreme power throughout Russia for nearly half of the 18th century; strong-minded, independent, brilliantly intelligent and sexually liberated, she was the definition of the modern woman.
Produced by Origin Pictures and New Pictures, the limited series will follow Catherine toward the end of her reign and her passionate affair with Grigory Potemkin (Clarke), a Russian military commander who became Catherine’s lover, favored statesman and life-long friend. Amid scandal, intrigue and immense conflict, they develop a unique and devoted relationship, overcoming their adversaries and together...

Whether he likes it or not, for the time being at least, each new project released by Nick Cave and his trusty Bad Seeds will be scrutinised for additional depth; be it intentional or otherwise. Every arched eyebrow, contorted mouth and pointed finger will be interpreted as some sort of significant, conscious gesture hinting towards the residual imprint left as a result of the tragic, sudden passing of his son Arthur, who died aged 15, in 2015.
It was in this manner that 2016’s touching, elegiac One More Time with Feeling reverberated. In that instance, what began life as a straightforward documentary primarily aimed at charting the recording process of what would become their latest record (Skeleton Tree, also released in 2016) ended up as a visual parchment of pain and loss that far outstretched and transcended the original Mo. If the experience acted as any sort of therapy for the grieving family remains unclear,...

He's currently starring in Star Wars: Rogue One, but there are some fascinating horrors to be found in Donnie Yen's back catalogue...
After his recent show-stealing turn in Rogue One, it felt like the right time to write a little about Donnie Yen, one of my favourite actors. From his incendiary breakthrough performance in Tiger Cage (1988) to the acclaimed Ip Man trilogy (2009 - 2016), Yen's body of work has earned him a reputation as one of the all-time greatest martial arts stars and action choreographers. His high-energy blend of fighting styles has been hugely influential on the genre both in the east and west, and his charismatic performances have kept him popular with fans for decades.
However, while his kung fu films have been written about extensively, there's not quite as much about his brief forays into my other favourite genre: horror. He's arguably been on...

From The Boxer's Omen to the genuine unpleasantness of Calamity Of Snakes, we take a look at a stomach-churning subgenre of cinema...
In 1975, Ho Meng Hua’s Black Magic cast its spell over Chinese audiences and summoned up a subgenre that produced some of the most extreme, esoteric and stomach-churning horror films of all time. Between the late 70s and early 80s, Chinese black magic movies were pumped out en masse, feeding audiences their fill of evil sorcery and twisted moralizing. The formula usually featured some poor schmuck enlisting a dark wizard to help them achieve something (more often than not, something sexual) and finding that the forces they’ve unleashed are more than they can handle. Cue the flamboyant special effects and abundant nudity.
These films took inspiration from authentic folk magic for their various spells and rituals which, sadly, means they frequently feature real animal slaughter.

Peking Opera Days
The Peking Opera school was run from a small theatre by Master Yu Jim Yuen, this was where Sammo Hung would begin his journey. In them days, the stundents would normally enroll for around 10 years, each day performing gruelling tasks for up to 18 hours a day which included training in the Martial Arts, weapons training, acrobatics, acting and singing. The Peking opera of course brought together Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen, Yuen Tak and Yuen Mo, who would eventually be known as the 7 Little Fortunes. They took the first name “Yuen” in a sign of...
