Wayne Berwick’s Microwave Massacre isn’t a good movie. It’s just not. There’s just not a lot that it does well. The script is pretty thin, the acting is so-so at best and the jokes often miss the mark. With that all being said, there is something charming to it and there is some fun to be had as long […]...

Microwave Massacre (1983)
Written by: Thomas Singer and Craig Muckler
Directed by: Wayne Berwick
Cast: Jackie Vernon (Donald), Claire Ginsberg (May), Loren Schein (Roosevelt), Al Troupe (Philip), Lou Anne Webber (Dee Dee Dee), Ed Thomas (Dr. Von Der Fool)
There were two significant inventions that shaped suburbia, and the lives of regular people in general in the 1980’s Those boons to domestic life would be the video cassette recorder and the microwave oven. More often than not, they were used in conjunction with one another to create a defining social moment for me. I ate microwave popcorn for the very first time while I watched “Footloose” on our brand new Vcr. Over the next couple of years, the movies varied from comedy to horror, and Hollywood big budget all the way down to video nasties. The microwave food varied from popcorn to nachos, brownies, and TV dinners.

As a kid perusing the shelves of my local mom-and-pop video store every weekend, there were two VHS covers that scared me every time I looked at them. I made sure to avoid the box art for Neil Jordan’s horror fantasy film The Company of Wolves; something about the wolf’s snout protruding from a person’s mouth was too disturbing for my eight-year-old brain to comprehend. The second box, however, was one that I always made a point to walk past because while I found it gross and scary, I was weirdly drawn to it. I had no real desire to see the movie—if the cover was that nasty, the film itself had to be ten times more sick—but I was forever daring myself to sneak one more look at the video box. That movie was the 1983 horror comedy Microwave Massacre.

Glurg garrgle gurgle raaaaw! It's the razor-clawed reptile-man that scared the bejesus out of little kids, way back when. Jack Kevan's basic monster mash drags its feet a bit, but technically it's as slick as they come. Plus, the encoding is perfect. And did I mention the scary parts? This one inspired plenty of gory nightmares. Be careful where you sit, because Cavity Colors has unleashed a new Ghoulies collection that pays tribute to the 1984 horror comedy and its little hellions with new shirts, a sticker, and an enamel pin.
From Aaron Crawford at Cavity Colors: “As a kid of the late 80’s and early 90’s, I was lucky enough to experience a small part of the golden age of VHS and Video Store Rentals. My mom would take me to a local, family owned video store called Video Oasis back in my hometown of Augusta, Ga. Now long defunct, this store basically helped shape my love and obsession with horror at a very young age. My mom would take me to rent Godzilla movies over and over, and I’d always run off to the dusty, poorly lit horror section and find myself drooling over the VHS box art for films such as Maniac, Texas Chainsaw Massacre,...

They Came For Dinner…To Find They Were It!!
Microwave Massacre stars legendary stand-up comedian and actor Jackie Vernon as Donald, a disgruntled construction worker whose wife’s predilection for haute cuisine drives him to cannibalism.
Donald unwittingly stumbles upon a solution to his two major problems in his life – his nagging wife and his lack of decent meals – when, one night, he bludgeons his better half to death with a pepper grinder in a drunken rage. Thinking on his feet, Donald dismembers the body and sets about microwaving the remains, which turn out to be rather delicious.

Let’s get the story straight or at least as straight as I can remember it. One cold winter’s eve I sat down with a four pack of Burton Baton from Dogfish Head and drank the whole damn thing plus an Insanely Mad Elf and probably some vodka. Maybe more beer. In fact I find it highly unlikely that in the time where I was a freak booze hound with a penchant for micro brews with an abnormally high amounts of alcohol and sugar that I wasn’t pouring at least one more six pack down my gullet. Why do I “confess’ this? Because when I was imbibing the spirits of the season I was watching Silent Night, Deadly Night parts 3, 4 and 5 for the very first time and while I enjoyed 4 and 5 (you know how I feel about 3), part 4 has come to be somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine.

Remember in Kill Bill Vol. 2 when David Carradine (Bill) explains to Uma Thurman (Ms. Kiddo) why he finds Superman to be the most fascinating of all super heroes? Basically he says that Clark Kent is Superman’s vision of humanity, his criticism and his observation of man. He says it with a slow drawl and makes you feel all gushy and warm up until he hits the punch line when you get the feeling like you might just wanna punch Superman in the face for belittling us so. Yes, we are the dorks you have been looking for. We are the weak people of Earth who where suits and ties and spectacles, but you know what? We also invented the fuck out of you, Superman! When I tell you that the Video Home System tape is alive and well you probably scoff. How can this even be remotely possible in this technologically advantaged age? You probably also ask me what I’ve been smoking and where you can procure said smokeables. VHS is alive and well. New tapes are being produced on a very small, collectible scale and they are selling quite well. The “dead format” to which it has been referred is an inaccurate label or at least it is to this fan boy. Need proof? Well we could site the new Toxic Avenger limited edition VHS or the recently 1980 X entry on Nail Gun Massacare. Hey how about The Basement shot on video big box of awesome? Go Here if you want to listen to the podcast about the newest horror phenomenon that got the horror folks jumpin outta their pants in back into the movie theater. Having written a review about the damn movie I think ya’ll know my humble opinion on the subject. If not than this podcast will serve to create a delightful positive synergy around Drew Goddard’s first offering in the director seat. This week on Dead Air Jeff Konopka, Shawn Savage and James Harris discuss the finer points of newsworthy horror, what we’ve been watching and our feature, The Cabin in the Woods.
Note: We will not be posting the trailer to The Cabin in the Woods because it gives too much away. Don’t let this movie get spoiled for you. See it in the theater.

This is the double feature sure to make you a hungry horror fans. For It Came From 1980 X this week we are tackling two very kitchen related horror films from the 1980′s. First is Gore-met, Zombie Chef from Hell. Second we have Microwave Massacre. While you’ve no doubt seen the covers of this VHS classics any number of times, maybe even been repulsed by them, there’s no guarantee that you’ve actually seen and “enjoyed” them. Enjoyed is in quotations because quite honestly you can’t say that you like either one of these films based on their merit. They’re as close to the horror equivalent of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fodder as you’ll find in the genre. The promise of the gross out and poor production value is why you’d seek out these classics. I’m fairly certain it is not possible to get laid while watching these movies.
