Screambox has revealed a brutal roster of horror titles for July, offering fans a blend of classic slashers, international thrillers and an all-new original series. The month kicks off with Uncle Sam, the Independence Day slasher that turns patriotic pageantry into a blood-soaked spectacle. On the eleventh, the service uncages William Lustig’s cult staple Maniac alongside the ’70s video nasty The Toolbox Murders, post-apocalyptic biker romp The New Barbarians, psychedelic vampire shocker Vampyres and two lesser-known gems in Fire and Ice and The Killing Hour.
Mid-month brings Screambox’s first foray into original programming with The Trouble with Tessa, a two-episode premiere on the fifteenth. The series follows a disgraced documentarian who unearths a cache of mysterious tapes and sets out to expose the darkest secrets of a picture-perfect town. Viewers seeking surreal thrills need look no further than The Stendhal Syndrome from giallo maestro Dario Argento, which arrives...

I recently re-watched and reviewed Hawk the Slayer, which was a fun, albeit utterly flawed piece of silly fantasy flim-flam. It had the sole intention of making money, which seems as likely as someone who goes out and spends all their money on lottery tickets.
None of the building blocks were in place to make a successful film.
Compare it to my reality TV pitch. A bunch of strangers, with no discernible talent or skills, meet on a beach and are given some hours in which to build a working submarine. The parts supplied for the contestants are not those of a submarine (the contestants do not know this). I wish them luck. In their watery tomb.
Fire and Ice was a 1983 film, brought to us by the Fantasy union of the twin towers of director Ralph Bakshi and fantasy art icon Frank Frazetta. Bakshi might not be to everyone...

We begin with testicles—titan-sized testicles yanked clean from the pelvis of a slumbering devil by a wandering man in chains. That opening is metal Af and unforgettable, and just about par for the course across this rotoscopic animated film by brother filmmakers Lauris and Raitis Abele—a gloomy squall of flesh, faith, and fucking that harkens back to the gory, glory days of Heavy Metal magazine and adult fantasy animation of the 1980s.

Miranda Yousef’s documentary, “Art for Everybody,” turns its lens upon Thomas Kinkade, the artist whose moniker, the “Painter of Light,” became a ubiquitous cultural watermark. Kinkade’s canvases, instantly recognizable for their luminous cottages nestled in impossibly serene landscapes, achieved a level of popular adoration that remains staggering.
His images of tranquil gardens and softly glowing windowpanes offered a pictorial escape, a world scrubbed clean of disquiet. Yet, the film promises, and indeed delivers, a gaze that extends beyond this heavily merchandised effulgence, probing the more shadowed recesses of the man who painted America’s aspirations for peace and an uncomplicated existence. The viewer is invited to look closer at an artist whose story is far from the simple serenity he so famously depicted.
An Empire Built on Light
Thomas Kinkade’s artistic signature was the creation of a specific, aspirational tranquility. His paintings are studies in saccharine perfection:...

Adult animation isn’t something that gets talked about enough. Paving the way for today’s movie were things like Fritz the Cat, Lord of the Rings which is not expressly adult of course, and Wizards. Let us know if we should talk about Wizards in some form by the way. Other movies that firmly tie into a similar vein of Heavy Metal are American Pop from the same year and Fire and Ice from a couple years later. While a bunch of the animated movies listed or even not listed fall under the sex comedy, fantasy, or recreation of modern life, Heavy Metal is something else entirely. It’s an anthology sci-fi, horror, comedy, action, fantasy that has a rocking soundtrack and earns its hard R rating. It was held back from being on video for a while due to licensing issues but has become an endearing cult classic 44 years later.

Fire Country has had one of the fastest franchises expansions in recent memory. The show has introduced tons of characters in its three seasons, and pushed its protagonists in unexpected and exciting directions. Unfortunately, one of these characters is set to walk away in the season finale, set for April 25.
Jake Crawford (Jordan Calloway) has been eyeing the door for a good chunk of season 3. The Station 42 Captain was suspended for disobeying orders to evacuate a mountain fire in the episode "Fire and Ice," and the character subsequently voiced a desire to become a Battalion Chief. The episode ended with Crawford calling a Battalion Chief and asking when he knew it was time to leave his previous gig with Station 42. In the episode "Eyes and Ears Everywhere," Crawford made a toast to his "two weeks notice," all but confirming his master plan.

Jordan Calloway as Jake Crawford – Possibly Leaving?
Viewers are speculating that Jordan will be leaving Fire Country.
It started with Season 3 Episode 11, titled “Fire and Ice,” in which he was suspended for disobeying Fire Division Chief Sharon Leone’s orders to evacuate a mountain fire because of her planned water dump, which would have melted enough snow to cause an avalanche.

Bode (Max Thieriot) will always take any opportunity to play the hero, and while sometimes he can be annoying, he does what needs to be done at other times. The penultimate airing of Fire Country Season 3 finds him going head-to-head with the people involved in the Oxalta deal as he and Manny (Kevin Alejandro) threaten to blow it apart. Meanwhile, "The Station 42 crew responds to a routine house fire that escalates into a dangerous situation for one of their own," reads the logline for Fire Country Season 3, Episode 18, "Eyes and Ears Everywhere." Still, in the episode airing on Friday, April 18, Jake (Jordan Calloway) considers leaving the station as tensions reach new highs. Colter took his survival talents to the snowy mountains and quickly found himself in a world of trouble.
Only Colter would be out looking for missing sisters and somehow find himself involved in some weird ritual in the middle of nowhere with zero backup, one gun, and a dream.
Tracker Season 2 Episode 16 was a wild one, but that’s come to be expected with Tracker.
(Darko Sikman/CBS)
Tracker prides itself on being anything but ordinary.
Sure, we get cases of the week, which is a formula as old as time, but we’re not getting your average missing person every week. They deal with cases that fall far outside the box, which sets it apart from most other action dramas on television.
This could have easily been a whole hour of Colter out in the wilderness battling the elements and trying to find Shelly and Brianna, but things went...

By the time Maeve Harrigan is casually suggesting the assassination of a grieving mother as “Plan B,” you realize the Harrigans don’t really do strategy.
They do theater and spectacle. Most of all, they do survival at any cost, preferably with as much psychological damage as possible.
MobLand Season 2 Episode 3 takes everything that’s been simmering in the first two hours — grief, revenge, dysfunction, and half-whispered threats — and turns it into something colder, more calculating.
(Luke Varley/Paramount+)
The bomb that opens the episode may not kill anyone, but emotionally, it’s a declaration of war.
And by the end of the hour, there’s no mistaking who’s willing to get their hands bloody… or who already has.

Sami might think she’s got a handle on her past now that she’s in therapy, but she wouldn’t be who she is if she were right about that!
Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 4-14-25 have Sami jumping into a kiss with another one of her exes.
We’ve been here before, many times, and it remains to be seen if Sami’s new attitude will make any difference to the fallout.

Still, this is a bad idea. Rafe isn’t like Ej — he’s a decent guy, and he and Sami were a strong couple once.
Unfortunately, he just got out of a relationship with Jada, and that breakup is the definition of a split for the sake of drama!

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Fire Country Season 3 Episode 17 “Fire and Ice.”] Don’t go, Jake! Jordan Calloway‘s character is seriously considering his future at Station 42 on Fire Country. We’ve already seen him wondering what his future could hold considering he knows that the “keys to the kingdom,” a.k.a. Vince’s (Billy Burke) job as battalion chief, will one day be his son Bode’s (Max Thieriot), now that he’s free and part of Cal Fire. Vince awkwardly overheard him talking about it with Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila) in the previous episode, and all he really did was give him the cliche “I’m not dead yet” line. But Jake’s clearly not happy with how things are going at the firehouse, continuing into Episode 17. Now, Jake finds out that Vince gave the Ok for Gabriela’s new love interest, photographer Finn (Blake Lee), to do a ride-along and take action...

Well, looks who is back on Fire Country. I knew the third season wouldn’t waste a talent like Constance Zimmer. These writers are really pulling out all the stops to elevate this show.
And kudos to the hands behind the series for keeping things consistent. It really seemed like the show was going to fall back on old habits a few times throughout “Fire and Ice.”
I have to hand it to Fire Country Season 3 Episode 17. The arguments and drama felt real and not forced. The episodic case’s plotting was genius and possibly had an unexpected effect on some viewers.
(Sergei Bachlakov/CBS)
The bottom line is that this has been the best season of Fire Country, and, ironically, I hope whatever spark lit a fire under the writers never dies down.

Good grief, Shawn Hatosy has to be the hardest-working man in television right now.

Though it is only in its freshman season, Watson has certainly gathered together quite the cast of characters. Two such skilled cast members were kind enough to sit down with TV Fanatic.
Before we get into it, though, if you haven’t had a chance to see the show, it is incredible. What stands out the most are the episodic cases.
Watson has made true medical mysteries its bread and butter. Which means the Holmes Clinic is going to need some of the best and brightest to heal the terminally ill.

Eve Harlow and Rochelle Aytes stopped by to discuss some of the developing drama and huge twists headed our way on Watson Season 1 Episode 9, “Take a Family History.”
Don’t worry, though, because while Eve does discuss what’s in store for Dr. Ingrid, I took the liberty of hiding any spoilers because, trust me, it is Good.

Some characters are written to grow, change, and carry the weight of a show’s emotional arc.
Others are written to… stand nearby. Quietly. Maybe throw in a reaction shot or a one-liner.
These are the characters I call tactical wallpaper — the ones who’ve been on our screens for years but somehow still feel like strangers.
(Peter Gordon/NBC)
They’re not guest stars. They’re not day players. They’re part of the ensemble. And yet, we know nothing about them.
They get no story arcs, deep emotional beats, or even a vague mention of life outside the job. They just exist. Always there, never seen.
Let’s start with Chicago Fire. It’s one of the worst offenders, and I say that with love.

At first glance, Yellowstone and a Hallmark holiday movie have nothing in common — one’s a blood-soaked Western dynasty and the other’s a low-stakes seasonal romance in a town that smells like cookies.
But here’s the twist: many viewers who love one also love the other.
Though drastically different in tone and aesthetics, these two storytelling empires are built on the same emotional scaffolding: family, loyalty, romance, grief, homecomings, and the eternal hope that love or legacy will somehow make everything right.
(Paramount+/Hallmark Screenshot)
It’s not as strange as it sounds. The Taylor Sheridan universe may wrap its stories in barbed wire and generational trauma, but at their core, they’re still deeply soapy.
His shows aren’t grounded in gritty realism — they’re emotionally heightened, dramatically stylized, and sometimes downright operatic. Sound familiar?

His shows aren’t grounded in gritty realism — they’re emotionally heightened, dramatically stylized, and sometimes downright operatic. Sound familiar?

Jon Hamm’s Andrew “Coop” Cooper doesn’t fall from grace so much as he’s pushed.
Fired under false pretenses, replaced emotionally by an NBA all-star, and quietly erased from the only world he ever knew — Coop doesn’t fight back. Not at first. He just… absorbs it.
The heartbreak, the humiliation, the financial gut-punch. He’s not angry — he’s stunned. That’s what makes him dangerous.
(Courtesy of Apple TV+)
On the premiere of Apple TV+‘s Your Friends & Neighbors, Coop’s undoing doesn’t feel like karma. It feels like a rigged system finally cashing in on its favored sons, and Coop realizing too late that he was never one of them.
Yes, he slept with a younger employee. One time. Months ago. And yes, she was clearly into him.

Well, we’ve known Unique was back since Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 3 Episode 10, but Raq didn’t.
She, and everybody but Early and a veterinarian, thought Unique was long gone, no longer a threat on the Southside. She and everyone thought wrong.
(Courtesy of Starz)
I was starting to worry about how long they would keep Unique hidden because there’s only so long you can hide in plain sight.
With each move Unique made, he was putting himself out there more and more, and at some point, somebody was going to see him and realize, “Damn, you look a lot like Unique.”
Unique would then open his mouth and make a quip about coming back from the dead, and the jig would be up.

What is it about the back half of this season of Grey’s Anatomy?
It lacks pizazz or real excitement, and while Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 14 wasn’t the worst offering the season has had, it was just okay.
The mentorships and friendships are making strides, but the relationships? Those are falling apart.
(Disney/Mike Taing)
Perhaps one of the hour’s issues was the lack of presence for some of the series’ robust cast. Some of the characters were utilized in unusual ways.
The tension between Teddy and Ben remains bizarre, and his attempts to return to practicing medicine have been very clumsy. It’s hard to tell what’s working with him and what isn’t.

Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 18 Quietly Addresses the Harsh Truth About Trauma and Criminality
I’ve been critical of Law & Order: Svu Season 26, but when it gets it right, it Really hits hard.
Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 18 (“The Accuser”) had everything that I love about this show.
It didn’t hold back, but it also didn’t hit the audience over the head with its message — and that’s especially important when it explores issues like the relationship between trauma and crime.
(Peter Kramer/NBC) Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 18 Blurred The Line Between Victim And Perpetrator
“The Accuser” focused on the blurry line between victim and perpetrator, which allowed it to ask some difficult, hard-hitting questions.
As the episode began, Eddie Upshaw seemed like the least likely person to ever become the victim of a violent crime, which is TV speak for him having a terrible secret that needed to come to light.

When Constance Zimmer was cast in Fire Country as Renee, the character was described as "a force to be reckoned with." She fights for what's right, especially in the conservation of the environment. Station 42 has learned that a company has been dumping waste carelessly, poisoning Three Rock's water supply. In Fire Country Season 3, Episode 17, "Fire and Ice," Renee returns and reveals her plan that affects Sharon's (Diane Farr) deal with the company, Oxalta. Meanwhile, "The station 42 crew responds to a ski resort accident after a chair lift malfunctions, and Vince (Billy Burke) struggles to connect with his father," reads the official logline and, "Grammy-nominated country star Jelly Roll guest stars as Noah, a healthcare worker and former convict who is in the process of turning his life around." DC Comics newest title “Fire & Ice”, available June 2025, is written by Joanne Starer and illustrated by Stephen Byrne, with covers by David Nakayama:
“…in the pages of DC's ‘Absolute Power’ event, ‘Fire & Ice’ had finally achieved what Fire always wanted. The dynamic duo made a glorious return to the ranks of the ‘Justice League’ — and during a major world crisis, no less.
“But when the crisis was overcome, the smoke had cleared, and all the superpowers were restored, Ice found herself shooting off uncontrollable spurts of fire, and Fire had ice crystals forming at her fingertips.

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has weighed in on George R.R. Martin’s since-deleted blog posts criticizing the creative decisions that were made in season 2 of the HBO series.
Martin teased late last August that he planned to write “about everything that’s gone wrong with House of the Dragon.” Mainly, he was critical of Condal’s decision to omit a character that was key in Martin’s Fire & Blood and how that will likely impact the story going forward.
Condal previously addressed the challenge of adapting Fire & Blood for the small screen, calling Martin’s tome a “history book” that doesn’t necessarily come with fully fleshed-out moments or characters.
As for Martin’s blog post: “It was disappointing,” he told EW in an interview. “I will simply say I’ve been a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire for almost 25 years now, and working...

The director Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted for his breakout movie, Conan the Barbarian, told the Austrian action legend he should change his signature look. Schwarzenegger first rose to prominence when he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Debut Acting in a Motion Picture for his appearance in 1976's Stay Hungry, before following it with the acclaimed bodybuilding docudrama Pumping Iron. His breakthrough role as an action icon came with 1982's John Milius sword-and-sorcery epic Conan the Barbarian, but the director could have been very different if things had gone to Schwarzenegger's original plan.
It seems that the Terminator 2 star originally wanted the project to be helmed by American animator and filmmaker Ralph Bakshi, who made the dark fantasy Fire and Ice and the animated 1978 epic The Lord of the Rings. A cult classic director reveals why he rejected Rocky after Sylvester Stallone personally brought him the script, and then slept in his car. The actor rose from relative obscurity by writing and starring in the iconic 1976 film, directed by John G. Avildsen, which went on to become the highest-grossing movie of the year and received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor and Screenplay for Stallone, and winning three, including Best Picture and Best Director for Avildsen. The movie spawned a massive franchise that includes eight sequels with all but the most recent, Creed III, starring Stallone.
During a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Ralph Bakshi revealed why he rejected Rocky. Stallone personally brought Bakshi the script because he loved his 1973 film Heavy Traffic and wanted him to direct it. Stallone also needed somewhere to stay, so he slept in Bakshi's car because his wife wouldn't let a stranger sleep in their house.

Among the many genres in the world, fantasy stories are some of the most beloved, yet there are a number of fantasy movies that have been forgotten by audiences and deserve to be rediscovered once again. When considering the greatest fantasy movies of all time, viewers may point to productions like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Princess Bride, or The Chronicles of Narnia. No doubt, these movies deserve all the praise they get. However, they often overshadow other films that have just as much goodness to give, yet have been lost to time.
In general, the following fantasy movies are those that are well-loved and often positively reviewed, but have been swept under the rug after the release of more expensive fantasy franchise films. Not only are these movies worthy of a rewatch, but they often bring something to the table that other popular fantasy movies cannot. Their worlds are unique,...

Fantasy is a hard nut to crack. Where science fiction can build on the rust and chrome of worlds we know, fantasy asks us to envision something new, often helped along by tidbits of real world history (as many fans of George R.R. Martin know quite well). To bring these worlds to life on screen requires more magic than words on a page, making the special effects budget blow the king's purse wide open.
When it works, it's something special. We get to see impossible worlds, meet cultures and countries where the riddle of steel and the law of chivalry thrive. We take to skies full of dragons, and sandy deserts full of bandits. Of this grand niche, the sword and sorcery movie is the most approachable, with a down to earth ruffian flair. The distinction between this and high fantasy is slim, but for our purposes, if the world...
