This year’s Honorary Palme d’or recipient Michael Douglas received a lengthy standing ovation as he cruised on stage in Buñuel theatre to chair a masterclass session where he broke down his career as an actor and producer.

Opening the session, Douglas said that he has a long history with the Cannes Film Festival, which began with his father, Kirk, who met his stepmother Anna at the festival.

He went on to list some of the films he has brought to the Croisette over the years, including Steven Soderbergh’s pic Behind the Candelabra, which screened in 2013. Douglas said that at the time, his performance as Liberace in the pic was in the pole position to nab the Festival’s Best Actor prize, but his momentum was quashed by critics who said the project couldn’t be described as a feature film because it was set to be released on HBO in the US.

Michael Douglas is receiving a prestigious honour at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The actor will be given the Honorary Palme d’Or and will be honoured as part of the opening ceremony on May 16, Variety reported.

Douglas first appeared on Cannes’ legendary red carpet steps in 1979, together with Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, and director James Bridges, for the premiere of The China Syndrome. He returned for the 1992 competition bow of Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct, the film that rocketed Sharon Stone to superstardom, and was back a year later for the Cannes competition premiere of Joel Schumacher’s Falling Down. Douglas’ last official Cannes appearance was for Steven Soderbergh’s 2013 Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, where he played the famous pianist.

Cannes is to award legendary US actor Michael Douglas with an honorary Palme d’Or at this year’s festival.

The festival will pay tribute to him during the opening ceremony on May 16.

As part of the tribute, an upcoming Arte documentary - Michael Douglas, The Prodigal Son - by Amine Mesta, produced by Folamour, will be shown at the festival, for two days, from Sunday May 14 at 6pm to Tuesday May 16 at 6pm.

The festival will pay tribute to the actor and hand him the award during the Opening Ceremony on May 16.

“It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities, and excellence in storytelling,” Douglas said.

As part of the tribute, the festival will screen a previously unreleased documentary by Amine Mesta on Douglas titled Michael Douglas, The Prodigal Son on the festival site for two days, from May 14 at 6 pm to May 16 at 6 pm. The doc was produced by Folamour and will be broadcast on Arte.

The doc’s synopsis reads: “This special documentary shows us how Michael, an actor, and producer like his father Kirk, had to embrace their resemblance throughout his remarkable career in order to assert his difference.

Martial arts veteran Sammo Hung will be presented with a lifetime achievement honor at the Asian Film Awards.

The ceremony is back as an in-person event after a two-year absence and has shifted back to Hong Kong after previously being held in Hong Kong, Macau and Busan. Hung will accept the award on Sunday at the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

Hung’s career as an actor, action choreographer, director and producer spans some 60 years.

Though it wasn’t one of the top programs of Tuesday evening according to Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliate numbers (that triumph goes to an original of NBC’s “This Is Us” and to an encore of CBS’ “NCIS”), The CW’s series debut of “Superman & Lois” at 8 p.m. and the “Superman & Lois: Legacy of Hope” special both scored substantial primetime numbers compared to the network’s typical ages 18-49 performance. “Superman & Lois” beamed 1.71 million viewers to its premiere telecast and drew a rating of 0.3 in the key demo. The subsequent special also obtained a 0.3 and drew 1.50 million viewers.

Elsewhere on television, NBC was dominating Tuesday, starting with the 9 p.m. airing of a new episode of “This Is Us” that garnered 5 million viewers and a 0.9 rating in the key demo. It came first in terms of ages 18-49 rankings and second in total viewership for the night.

During the mid 1990’s, I happened to stumble across a kung fu movie called “The Prodigal Son“, which changed my life forever. It had everything, awesome Kung Fu, Comedy, Drama, Training Sequences and the star of the show, Lam Ching Ying.
