The unparalleled style of French filmmaker Robert Bresson expands beyond the confines of the cinematic form. With each of his films — terse, transcendentalist examinations of the soul weighed against inhumane circumstances — it feels like Bresson unlocked a new layer of human experience. Most of all, he is perhaps the epitome of an uncompromising vision, as even his carbon copy imitators will fail to replicate the unnerving and chillingly probing sentiment of Pickpocket, A Man Escaped, and L'Argent.

I grew up listening to rap music, and I learned English by studying the lyrics. I noticed that the rappers I was a fan of talked about money as if it were an end in itself. This philosophy had a huge impact on me throughout my life. Thanks to movies, I also realized that money can be dangerous and destroy you. I’ve always been a huge fan of American cinema, and at some point, I noticed that all the characters I loved shared one particular trait: they all wanted to be financially free no matter what, because that’s how the country is built. King of the Hill’s highly-anticipated reboot isn’t set to hit the airwaves until early next year, but we may already have a few clues as to what Hank, Peggy, Bobby and the rest of Arlen’s finest may get into during their return to the small screen thanks to recently-published records on the Writers Guild of America’s website.
As of Friday, December 6th, we found that the WGA had added several episode names — likely for the series’ upcoming 14th season — into its Signatory Confirmation Lookups database. A resource aimed at helping buyers determine “which productions are covered by collective bargaining agreements,” the following 10 titles were published under King of the Hill between December 2023 and November 2024:

Working for Fox News comes with a lot of assumptions.
Just ask Kat Timpf. The whip-smart co-host of “Gutfeld!” and Fox News analyst is a one-woman wrecking ball when it comes to shattering those expectations. She’s not Maga. (“Trump? My guy who I’ve never even voted for?”) Nor is she one of those Never Trumpers longing for a next-gen Bush-Cheney ticket. (“The Department of Defense — more like the ‘Department of War Makes Money.’”) And she can’t be labeled heterosexual. In fact, she opens her latest book, “I Used to Like You Until …: (How Binary Thinking Divides Us),” with a hilarious reveal about a budding romance with a woman that was thwarted by the woman’s mother. Plot twist: The mom wasn’t a Bible-thumping Evangelical Christian but “a very, very, very feminist gender studies professor” who was horrified that her daughter was holed up in...

New to Streaming: The Beast, Handling the Undead, Bill Morrison, Aftersun, I Used to Be Funny & More
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Aftersun (Charlotte Wells)
One of the 2022’s most resonant films, Aftersun looks at the scratchy dynamics between a father and daughter while on vacation. It’s about memory, the finite nature of the relationships in our lives, and the difficulties of a parent’s diminishing mental health. Charlotte Wells knows where to put the camera in her debut—undeterred from taking risks, from placing her characters outside of the frame, from looking at shadows instead of the people themselves. Aftersun is a rare, tremendous first film, full of heart and focused melancholy; it breaks you down and fills you up simultaneously. The consistent inclusion of camcorder footage, and the fact that it enhances the story rather than becoming a distraction, further proclaims...

Terry Gilliam has been to Cannes with three of his own films since 1983, but one of his favorite memories of the festival takes him back to that very first time, at the 36th edition, as the co-writer and co-star of Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. Along with Graham Chapman and the film’s director Terry Jones, he’d emerged from the Carlton hotel’s iconic entrance, then bedecked with promotion for the upcoming Bond movie Octopussy, to encounter a camera crew. Jones started grabbing people at random, shouting, “Who Ees Monty Python???” in a ridiculous foreign accent, and got so carried away that, when they reached the hotel’s famous terrace, he accidentally did it to Gilliam too.
The crowd loved it, and the day only grew stranger. Out on the Carlton’s jetty, they gave an interview to British news channel ITN, with Jones hiding behind Graham...

Rodrigo Moreno's The Delinquents is screening exclusively on Mubi in many countries. The Delinquents.Words have no owner. They simply are. They live in the speakers of a language, but no one has possession of a verb or a noun. If anyone can come close to such ownership, it is an artist, who puts the word in a complex combination that is theirs alone. A filmmaker's material is not words—though some might say a shot is its equivalent—but rather the world. Through framing, cutting, and duration, the director makes a movie their own, yet what is shot does not obey the will of the filmmaker. The material of the world is the filmmaker's lyrics, and the world does not belong to them. The arrangement and rearrangement of material—whether of words or of the world when it is filmed—into new works of art can be linked...

Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

HBO's Succession is filled with great Cousin Greg quotes that make him the funniest character in the series. Standing out amongst his wealthy, powerful family members, Greg's awkward, nervous, and blundering personality has made for some of the most memorable quotes of the entire series. He never seems to fit in despite his best efforts and it typically makes for hilarious and out of place moments.
It's not just his words that make Greg so great, as Nicholas Braun's mumbling and bumbling delivery of his lines gives the character such a loveable disposition even when he's doing something unlikable. There are quite frankly too many iconic Cousin Greg quotes from throughout the series so far, but Succession fans likely remember these lines the best.

Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was announced in 1973 at a press conference held at the London Planetarium, a spectral site which mirrored the album cover’s beam of light refracted through a triangle into a rainbow. Perhaps the iconic prismatic image provided the initial idea for fans to sync the classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939) to the album’s rock soundscape.
The band’s history with movies is vast and varied. They scored films in the aftermath of the demise and departure of the band’s founder, Syd Barrett. The success of Dark Side of the Moon also helped the group become motion picture producers, investing in the 1975 comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Wall, directed by Alan Parker and starring Bob Geldof, pushed boundaries and redefined a rock opera on film. And while the bassist/vocalist/songwriter Roger Waters didn’t let Stanley Kubrick...

On 1 March 1973, a new moon rose over rock music. Immersive, quadrophonic, celestial and deeply introspective, Pink Floyd’s eighth album arrived in a heady flurry of cash tills, chiming clocks, pained-angel arias and cold, disembodied voices speaking of violence, death and insanity. Where their prog-rock peers were busy crafting grandiose yet chintzy pantomimes of Arthurian legend, sci-fi fantasy and messianic pinball, the Floyd delved into the dark universe of humanity’s inner space; into the stresses and horrors of everyday life that daily push us all to the brink. A record as relatable as it was cosmic, as melodic on the topics of “Time” and “Money” as it was climactic on the themes of war, division and madness, The Dark Side of the Moon set a new standard for high-concept intellectual rock. Forty-five million prism-clad units later, it remains the fourth best-selling record ever made.

“Can I get a little liquorrrrr?,” Cardi B asked. “There’s no liquor for me, huh? Damn. I don’t like that.”
The duo performed their Grammy-nominated hit “Clout” and kissed onstage. But then Offset returned with a small gift for his wife.
“Thank you, baby,” Cardi B said. “Let’s take a shot. Put your drink up, bitch. One, two, three — bottoms up, bitch!”

“Big government” is a dirty word for many people in politics, but what does it actually mean? A new lighthearted documentary series from Netflix wants to find out.
“The G Word with Adam Conover” aims to dig into the sprawling bureaucracy that makes up the executive branch of the federal government. Each episode will feature the “Adam Ruins Everything” host examining a different area of the government, complete with interviews from employees at obscure agencies that many Americans probably didn’t know existed.
Netflix’s synopsis of the show describes it as “a hybrid comedy-documentary series that pulls back the curtain on the surprising ways the U.S. government impacts our everyday lives, from the mundane to the life-changing. With his signature blend of irreverence and insight, Conover explores the government’s triumphs, failures, and what we might be able to do to change it.”

Company exploring ad-supported lower-cost tiers.
In a rare turn of events Netflix has lost subscribers for the first time in more than a decade, shedding 200,000 global members in the first quarter of 2022.
Current global membership of 221.64m after 6.7 year-on-year growth still means Netflix is the streaming market leader, however the loss of subscribers was far off its forecasts of a 2.51m gain. The company forecast a loss of two million global paid subscribers in the second quarter.

The Simpsons Season 33 Episode 17
Lisa almost learns a lesson on The Simpsons’ “The Sound of Bleeding Gums.” When the Springfield lottery uses a song from local saxophone legend Bleeding Gums Murphy in their commercials, Lisa decides to help her musical idol’s son Monk, played by John Autry II, by any means possible.
Once again, the writers are talking about the show, and how The Simpsons are cited for social justice warrior product placements at the expense of laughs. Homer nails the criticism on the head, advising Lisa not to try to save anyone or anything, and making her promise not to waste her time on lost causes. Like the lottery, there are no winners.
The self-referential setup climaxes with a gag showing 3-second versions of old cartoons which are now politically incorrect. This, and a bit about airing shows even Peacock rejected, pre-cancels cancel culture,...

Very few The Mediapro Studio shows, indeed very few Spanish series in general, have lit a fire on the open market like “The Head,” an Antarctic-set thriller which lifts off as a murder mystery to constantly evolve into other realms.
Starring Álvaro Morte, “Money Heist’s” Professor and Japanese pop idol Tomohisa Yamashita, written by Alex and David Pastor and directed by Jorge Dorado, “The Head” broke viewership records on co-financiers Hulu Japan and HBO Asia and sold to over 90 countries including HBO in the U.S.
The Mediapro Studio retained IP. “Sales opened doors to new markets and clients with whom we hadn’t worked before,” said Laura Fernández Espeso, CEO of The Mediapro Studio. It also began blazing a trail for Tms’s drive into English-language series, one of its biggest ambitions.
Yet a sequel was, by any measure, a tall order. Season 1 was always conceived as a limited series , notes Ran Tellem,...

Like the echo of a distant time, a dozen previously unreleased Pink Floyd albums quietly surfaced on streaming services this week. All of the concerts occurred between 1970 and 1972, covering the period in which the band released Atom Heart Mother (1970), Meddle (1971), and Obscured by Clouds (1972), and had already begun playing songs from Dark Side of the Moon (1973).
One recording — a March 1972 Tokyo gig — features a near-complete performance of Dark Side in sequence, a full year before its release. The songs are loose and jammy in a way not heard on the studio version.

Gandia and Arturo, two of the biggest villains on Money Heist, weren’t even in the second half of Season 5, but their negative energy could still be felt as the series came to an end.
Tokyo died taking out Gandia, and hallucinations of Arturo, whom she nearly killed, caused Stockholm to slowly lose her mind and turn to morphine and antipsychotics to make him vacate her psyche. Enrique Arce, who played Arturo on the wildly popular Netflix series known as La Casa de Papel in its native Spain, said being one of the baddies on the drama had its drawbacks.

So you’ve finished “A Family Tradition” – the concluding episode of Netflix’s global blockbuster series Money Heist. It’s like finally getting off the wildest rollercoaster ride ever, right? So many twists and turns, so many powerful scenes that put our hearts in our throats, so many feels…and now it’s over.
From the very start, no one knew where this show was going to go. The original Spanish TV series La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper) would have disappeared into obscurity when it was cancelled had not Netflix picked it up. But there, the gang stole the hearts of the world, was one of Netflix’s most popular foreign language titles, and became an international symbol for resistance movements. Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) said it best in her ultimate narration, “When this story began, nobody could’ve imagined…”

Rico Nasty and Flo Milli are all about the “Money” in the video for Rico’s new song. Produced by Boyz Noize, the single interpolates samples from 2 Live Crew’s “We Want Some Pussy” and Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing.”
The Roxana Baldovin-directed clip takes the rappers on a financial-oriented journey, where cash rules the day. “Hey, we want some money,” they rap. The duo are seen in an infomercial called The Money Show, strut down a yellow brick road in homage to The Wizard of Oz, and float through the clouds.

It’s not hard to imagine the crew from Money Heist facing off against each other in life or death rounds in Squid Game. The robbers’ red jumpsuits already perfectly fit into the aesthetic of the deadly competition, after all.
Related: One Quote From Each Money Heist Character That Perfectly Sums Up Their Personality
Unlike their infiltration of the Royal Mint and the Bank of Spain, the robbers won’t have decades to plan out every single detail. Instead, characters like the Professor and Tokyo will only have a few minutes to come up with a strategy once the game is announced for that level. In order to win, they would have to be able to put aside their emotions and come up with quick solutions for each game.

The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Both “Many Saints” producer and co-writer David Chase and “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve have criticized the corporate decision to release films day-and-date in theaters and via HBO Max, but despite the outcry, the two highly anticipated features lead a massive lineup of acclaimed library movie titles and Emmy Award-winning original series coming to the network in October 2021.
