Out of My Mind Review: Breaking Silence, Shattering Barriers
Image
Out of My Mind is a powerful film exploration of disability, tenacity, and human potential. Set in the early 2000s, the film follows Melody Brooks, a 12-year-old with cerebral palsy who defies expectations and battles to be heard in a world that frequently ignores her. The Disney+ original, directed by Amber Sealey, is based on Sharon M. Draper’s novel and introduces spectators to a fascinating protagonist who experiences the world with extraordinary depth and intelligence despite her physical communication limitations.

The story focuses on Melody’s transformation. It begins when a forward-thinking PhD student, Dr. Katherine Post, lobbies for her inclusion in a mainstream sixth-grade classroom. Melody, who had previously been confined to a special education trailer, now finds herself navigating the complex social environment of regular school, full of problems, friendships, and opportunities for growth.

The casting of Phoebe-Rae Taylor, an actress with cerebral palsy, in the starring...

Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow, Simon Kinberg, and More Team For Adventure Film Powerhouse
I've never heard of indie filmmaker Emily Carmichael until today, but I have a feeling I'm going to be hearing about her a lot more in the years to come. THR reports that Hollywood heavy hitters Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) are teaming with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment to produce a new family adventure movie called Powerhouse, which Carmichael will write and direct. The plot is being kept under wraps from the press, but the original idea for the film came from Trevorrow, and after he saw a short film Carmichael made called The Hunter and The Swan Discuss Their Meeting, he called her to the set of his current movie and they worked out the characters that will appear in this new movie.

“Emily Carmichael is the next great writer-director of the kind of movies I love,” said Trevorrow. "Her ability to find warmth...

Arthouse Audit: 'Raajneeti' Continues Bollywood Blitz
Following My Name is Khan and Kites, Raajneeti became the third Bollywood movie this year to lead all limited releases in its first weekend. Arthouse mainstays The Secret in Their Eyes, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and City Island continued to find audiences, while a handful of new movies had relatively insignificant openings. Raajneeti grossed $850,244 at 124 locations, which was good for first among limited releases and 11th place on the overall weekend chart. While its opening fell short of other 2010 Bollywood movies My Name is Khan, Kites and Housefull, it was solid in its own right. These movies do tend to be extremely front-loaded, though, so look for a steep fall from Raajneeti next weekend. The Secret in Their Eyes fared best among limited holdovers, down 13 percent to $397,705. Through its eighth weekend, the Best Foreign Language Oscar winner has grossed just under $4 million. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo also held well,...

Poltergeist’s Diminutive Psychic Zelda Rubinstein Dies
Character actress Zelda Rubinstein was best known for her role in the 1982 horror film Poltergeist. She starred as psychic Tangina Barrons, who’s small stature and childlike voice added more chills to the 1982 horror film about demonic forces at a suburban home. She reprised her role in the two sequels Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) and Poltergeist III (1988).

Rubinstein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 28, 1933. She worked as a medical technician, before embarking upon an acting career in the early 1980s. the 4′3″ actress was cast in the 1981 film Under the Rainbow, and she became an outspoken critic of the way little people portraying Munchkins in the film were depicted. She soon formed the Michael Dunn Memorial Repertory Theater Company in Los Angeles to give acting opportunities to other little people.

Though of small size, she also made a large impression in the films Anguish (1987), Teen Witch (1989), Guilty as Charged...
