The store in London which is supposed to be "Harte's", is actually the real Harrods London. Harrods allowed the producers to film the store with a "Harte's" sign in place of the Harrods sign, in green with gold lettering, and even in the same style of lettering. Interestingly, Harrods does not include an apostrophe on its famous sign, but the sign for "Harte's" has one. Harrods also gave permission for scenes to be filmed in the interior of the famous London store.
As of 2010, this is still the highest rated mini-series on Channel 4 in the U.K., peaking at 13.84 million viewers on the third night, January 4, 1985. This fact is still correct as of november 2019.
In November 2019, 35 years after this TV version was made, after her husband becoming ill, and later dying, Barbara Taylor Bradford announced that she would write a companion "prequel and parallel period" novel, but this time focusing on what happened to Blackie. Mention of if or when it would be made purely as a book, then adapted for television or film was not officially announced.
