Fans Praise Rosie O’Donnell’s Return to Stand-Up Amid Rumors of Comedy Special
Image
Before she was a queen of daytime talk or a cohost of The View, Rosie O’Donnell was a stand-up comedian — as you can see in her 1984 Star Search performance. At lately, O’Donnell has been returning to her roots, performing stand-up in what may be rehearsals for a rumored comedy special. On Instagram on Friday, May 23, O’Donnell shared a photo of herself on stage. “I can’t believe this is me now,” she wrote, adding the hashtags #mounjaro (a brand-name weight loss medication), #weightloss, and “#bodydismorphia” [sic]. In the comments, supporters — including famous folks — praised O’Donnell for picking up the mic again. “I Love That You’Re Doing Stand-up,” Kathy Griffin wrote in one comment, a sentiment echoed by Instagram user @lindalmay5345. Comedian Dana Goldberg wrote, “I was just saying how damn lucky they are over there to witness you doing stand-up again!” View this post on Instagram A post...

Amazon’s Head Of Unscripted Series Jenny Falkoff Joins Netflix
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has hired another unscripted executive from Amazon.

The Love Is Blind streamer has appointed Jenny Falkoff, fresh from the success of Beast Games, to its Jeff Gaspin-led unscripted team.

Falkoff is being tasked with helping Netflix find more large, “splashy” competition formats and “buzzy” social experiments. As Gaspin told Deadline last year, he is now focusing on “bigger formats, more of what you would call broadcast-style shows versus the cable style shows”. It comes after recent greenlights for series such as The Golden Ticket, first revealed by Deadline, and Star Search.

Falkoff was previously head of unscripted series at Amazon, having spent seven months in that role, after previously having been head of reality series for nearly two years.

It comes eight months after her former colleague Alysia Russo, who was head of docuseries at Amazon, made the same move to join Netflix. It used to be...

The 17 Most Legendary ‘Star Search’ Performances — So Far (Video)
Image
Three decades after the syndicated version of Star Search went off the air on May 20, 1995, Netflix is bringing the talent competition back to television, and this time, it’s live. “Each week on Star Search, emerging performers in music, dance, comedy, and kids’ acts will take the stage to compete for a shot at the spotlight. The competition unfolds over time, with eliminations raising the stakes and plenty of surprises along the way. It’s part talent showcase, part high-stakes drama — and it’s all live on Netflix,” the streamer’s Tudum blog says. The host, judges, and premiere date are all Tbd, but the new Star Search is casting contestants. Netflix announced the new show on May 14, just days shy of the 30th anniversary of the final syndicated Star Search episode. That original iteration featured Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson’s longtime sidekick, as host, as singers, musical groups, dancers,...

Netflix’s Star Search revival could be a game-changer for talent show
Image
Do you want more talent shows? Of course, you do. People would not keep making new ones if we didn't want them. In the case of Netflix, though, the streaming giant is bringing back a familiar one. And not just old episodes, but a complete remake.

Netflix announced that it will bring back Star Search, a show that ran in the 1980s and 1990s, but hasn't produced new shows in 20 years. Ed McMahon once hosted, but won't be the host for various reasons now. (McMahon died in 2009 after a long and fruitful career.)

Like the original, the series will be live, and viewers can vote on who they think should win. The show's previous edition had people call in, but a computer click or text might suffice with today's technology. Netflix has yet to tell us how the votes can be cast.

Netflix To Reboot 'Star Search,' The Classic Ed McMahon Talent Show
Image
Some of the world's biggest stars got their start on talent competition shows. Before there was American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, or even Showtime at the Apollo, contestants made their way to Star Search with hopes of winning and making it big. Ed McMahon hosted the original Star Search from 1983 to 1995, seeing a young Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and more sing their hearts out on stage. There were also up-and-coming comedians, dancers, groups and more who made it their mission to sway the judges. Now Netflix wants to recreate the impact of the competition series with a live reboot on its streaming service.

According to Deadline, the new version will be produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, a full-service film and television production company with experience working on competition-based shows. In fact, the company already has one on Netflix, Rhythm + Flow, a hip-hop contest where aspiring rappers compete in battles,...

Image
Netflix announced five new series and two films as part of its 2025 advertiser upfronts presentation in New York on Wednesday, including a new untitled series from Dan Levy.

On the scripted series side, Netflix announced three new titles, perhaps the most anticipated of which is a new show from “Schitt’s Creek” creator and star Levy and “Bottoms” star Rachel Sennott. Described as a family crime comedy, the eight-episode series is set to go into production in 2025. The show follows two “deeply incapable siblings” who are blackmailed into entering into a life of organized crime, a logline reads. Taylor Ortega will star in the series as will Laurie Metcalf.

“I’m so excited to be bringing this truly chaotic family story to life with Netflix. Thrilled with the team we’re building both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Taylor Ortega is going to become a household name...

Netflix has renewed “Love on the Spectrum” and “Million Dollar Secret” for a Season 4 and Season 2, respectively.

Season 3 of “Love on the Spectrum,” a dating show that follows young adults with autism, premiered on April 2 and ranked in the Global Top 10 for two weeks. It’s executive produced by Karina Holden and Cian O’Clery and produced by Northern Pictures.

In “Million Dollar Secret,” hosted by Peter Serafinowicz, one of 12 contestants is given $1 million and must hold onto the money as rivals fight to hunt them down and claim it for themselves. “Eliminate the millionaire and the money moves to someone new,” reads Netflix’s description of the game, in part. “When should they strike? All Justin Timberlake Albums, Ranked According to Sales Numbers
Image
Justin Timberlake was once a budding twelve-year-old on Star Search and then a teen on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. In 1995, he would take the next step. Convinced by Chris Kirkpatrick’s vision for a boy band, he co-founded *Nsync with Jc Chasez. Joey Fatone and Lance Bass completed the lineup, and the group quickly gained traction with their hit I Want You Back.

By 1997, they had a deal with RCA, and despite *Nsync’s subsequent success, the group went on hiatus in 2002, setting the stage for Timberlake’s solo career. His debut single, Like I Love You, dropped later that year, leading to his first album, Justified. Packed with hits like Cry Me a River and Rock Your Body, it earned Timberlake two Grammys in 2004.

But decades later, his reputation has faltered. The 2004 Super Bowl incident with Janet Jackson lingers, and Britney Spears’ recent memoir has fueled further backlash.

Tony Hinchcliffe Apologizes to Absolutely Nobody
Image
Now that the dust has settled from the biggest stand-up bomb of the 2024 election cycle, open mic host and right-wing provocateur Tony Hinchcliffe is ready to make amends with none of the entire races he insulted.

On Sunday, October 27th, the Kill Tony host performed at a rally for President-Elect Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden, a stadium where Hinchcliffe had recently hosted an episode of his amateur comedian roast/Star Search podcast. Hinchcliffe found the new crowd at Msg to be less enthused about his half-baked, predictable, sub-4chan-level racist humor than his usual crowd, and by Monday morning, his laughless routine was front-page news on every media outlet in the country. Hinchcliffe’s hacky jokes about Black people carving watermelons on Halloween, Latino people having a lot of kids and Puerto Rico being an island of garbage failed to impress even the furthest-right pundits like Ann Coulter, and...

Martin Lawrence's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Martin Lawrence movies and TV shows started out thanks to his television roles, but he actually got his first big break thanks to Spike Lee. While he was mostly involved in boxing when he was in school, he started working as a comedian when he got out of school and actually began to make a living working standup shows. This led to Martin moving to New York City and joining The Improv, which got him a role on Star Search. That was his true big break, as it got him noticed in Hollywood.

This earned him the attention of Spike Lee, who gave Lawrence his first movie role in the award-winning Do The Right Thing. After this, he got roles in movies like House Party and Boomerang, and he finally was able to get his own starring role when he signed on to star in the comedy sitcom Martin.

Rosie O’Donnell Started Her Career by Telling Jerry Seinfeld’s Jokes
Image
Before she was starring in movies, hosting her own talk show and publicly feuding with garbage people, Rosie O’Donnell began her career in show business as a stand-up comedian. In fact, back in the ‘80s, she won Star Search five times.

But as O’Donnell just recounted on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast, her first attempt at stand-up didn’t go so well — mainly because she ripped off another comedian’s entire act.

O’Donnell only became a comic after Richie Minervini, then the owner of The East Side Comedy Club on Long Island, approached her after witnessing the teenager get big laughs during a high school performance. (Note to any modern club owners out there: Randomly approaching minors following school productions probably wouldn’t fly anymore.) Minervini told O’Donnell: “I own a comedy club, I think you’d be a great stand-up comic.”

O’Donnell’s response? “No way,...

David Duchovny Was Desperate to Star in ‘Full House’
Image
As Fox Mulder on The X-Files, David Duchovny investigated vampires, chased mutant sewer-monsters and battled scantily-clad, virtual-reality cowgirls. But he very nearly found himself in an even stranger situation: holed up in a San Francisco townhome with three children and two other dudes.

Yes, Duchovny came shockingly close to starring in Full House, which may sound kind of odd, but certain Full House storylines could have easily passed as X-Files episodes.

On a recent episode of his podcast Fail Better, Duchovny chatted with Fred Armisen about their early unsuccessful auditions, with the former Saturday Night Live cast member revealing that he once tried out for Mad TV, the Rc Cola to SNL’s Coke.

Duchovny then revealed that when he first moved to Los Angeles, he auditioned for plenty of sitcom pilots, and “thought each one was gonna be the break.” One of the shows that left him “devastated” for weeks afterwards was Full House.

What Happened to Martin Lawrence?
Image
“Comedy is what takes us away from all the pain and all the hurt and all the turmoil that goes on in life. It takes us away from that, even if only for a brief second, a brief moment.” Maybe you wouldn’t expect this level of depth from a man who’s made a career of being silly. Something else you might not expect? Even 30 years into his comedy career, he was still possessed by a nervous energy before getting on the stage for his 2016 special. So much of what has made Martin Lawrence successful is his ability to channel that nervous energy into something great and, more importantly, something funny.

But what drives that energy? For Martin, it may be the very pain, hurt, and turmoil he’s trying to help us escape. Despite his success, Martin’s life has been marked by challenges, from a difficult childhood to high-profile controversies.

Teenager Meg Griffin isn’t only an afterthought to her family (cartoon dad Peter regularly forgets about her existence even when she’s standing right next to him), the character also didn’t appear in the 1995 student film from which Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane developed his hit animated comedy.

MacFarlane made animated short ‘The Life of Larry’ while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1990s. It featured “loveable but tactless lower middle class” dad Larry, his supportive wife Lois, their heavy-set blonde, baseball-cap-wearing son Milt, and “incisive, cynical” talking dog named Steve, plus all the cutaway gags and pop culture parodies for which Family Guy would become famous… but no super-intelligent baby, and no butt-of-every-joke teenage daughter Meg.

One-off 1997 sequel ‘Larry and Steve’ lost Larry’s wife and son to focus on the talking dog, but by the time of the seven-minute 1998 Family Guy pilot,...

Sinbad Has A Stealthy Cameo In Good Burger 2, But It Could Have Been Bigger
Image
Millennials rejoice! 26 years later, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are once again serving up fast-food morsels in the achingly-awaited "Good Burger 2." Folks who grew up on Nickelodeon's kid-friendly sketch comedy series "All That" have been clamoring for a return to the chaotically unclean confines of Good Burger, and now that it's here, I'll let those whose satiric sensibilities were partially formed by the original pass judgment on the quality of the sequel.

I do, however, know Sinbad. A comedic force of nature, I first saw the man rack up multiple wins on the Ed McMahon-hosted talent competition "Star Search" in the 1980s. I remember watching him besting a young Dennis Miller; this bothered me at the time, but considering Miller's career trajectory, I am firmly in Sinbad's camp. After all, who else possessed the bravery to ask which part of the chicken produced the Chicken McNugget?

In any event,...

Studios Now in a Bidding War for the Rights to Britney Spears’ Memoir
Image
Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me, has created a buzz on social media and attracted the attention of major studios and streaming platforms who want to turn her story into a movie or series. The book reveals intimate details about Britney's past relationship with Justin Timberlake, including an abortion they had during their time together, which has sparked a backlash against Timberlake on social media. Former Nsync member Lance Bass defended Justin Timberlake, saying that everyone deserves to tell their story, and he hopes fans can find forgiveness.

The life of the pop princess Britney Spears continues to fascinate the world. After the release of her memoir, The Woman in Me, Britney Spears once again becomes the center of debate on social media due to the revelations she has shared in her book. Sinbad at an event for Hancock (2008)
Wtf Happened to Sinbad?
Sinbad at an event for Hancock (2008)
If you’re a child of the nineties, chances are you grew up loving Sinbad. Also known as David Atkins, Sinbad began his comedy career as a contestant on Star Search before nabbing his breakout role on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, where he played Coach Walter Oakes; he served as a mentor to the main cast, who all played students at the fictional Hillman College. His distinctive look made him instantly identifiable, and it wasn’t long before he started showing up in movies, with roles in Necessary Roughness and Coneheads.

His career was unusual because most people went to TV after their movie careers cooled down. For Sinbad, it was the opposite. His solo TV show, The Sinbad Show, was a flop, but shortly afterwards, his movie career went into high gear, with him appearing in a string of hit movies. His biggest hit was Houseguest opposite the late Phil Hartman,...

With “Dancing with the Stars” set to come back for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after spending last year on Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve to compete on the dance floor. Two of my previous suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third in season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second in season 28). Below is a list of female stars I think the show should consider inviting to the ballroom to vie for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with my picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know which you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to let us know in the comments what other stars you would like to see when the show comes back in September.

Rosie O’Donnell on Ellen, Madonna, Trump and 40 Years in the Queer Spotlight
Image
Stand-up comic. Talk show innovator. The View firebrand. Betty Rubble. There’s very little Rosie O’Donnell, 61, has left to accomplish in her singular career. From the moment she broke out of Long Island with a performance on Star Search in 1984, O’Donnell has proved a highly resilient, sometimes confrontational and always entertaining force. She’s also among the most fiercely outspoken advocates of LGBTQ+ causes in Hollywood. (She launched her own gay family cruise line, for heaven’s sake.) Then, as the country’s far right kicks up its attacks on queer people and their art forms, who better than O’Donnell, the original Donald Trump adversary and Broadway’s biggest cheerleader, to celebrate in The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2023 tribute to Pride?

THR sat down with the actor (American Gigolo, Smilf) and podcaster (iHeart’s Onward With Rosie O’Donnell) at a seaside restaurant near her home in Malibu — she moved...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: Who is Macaw?
Image
One of our favorite fellows competing on “The Masked Singer” season 9 is disguised as the Macaw. He wowed the crowd in his first appearance on March 22 with rollicking renditions of “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” by Shania Twain. It became clear quite quickly that this contender is someone who makes a living by raising his voice in song.

Forget those guessses by the judges that Macaw is Zayn Malik, Doug Robb or Elijah Wood. We’ve rewatched those first two performances and taken another look at his clues package. We are sure we’ve cracked the code as to Macaw’s true identity. Keep reading as we have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Macaw?”

We are absolutely certain that the Macaw is “American Idol” alumni David Archuleta. Don’t believe us?...

‘The Wedding Singer’: THR’s 1998 Review
Image
On Feb. 13, 1998, New Line unveiled The Wedding Singer in theaters in time for Valentine’s Day audiences. The Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore rom-com went on to earn 123 million globally at the box office. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below.

We’ve all heard him, usually at weddings and bar mitzvahs where alcohol often blurs true appreciation of his talents. Song stylist extraordinaire, he has the uncanny ability to make virtually any song, even “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida,” sound like “Hot Hot Hot.”

Now, thanks to Adam Sandler, he has been finally given his due in The Wedding Singer, a (for the most part) winning romantic comedy that plays off the per former’s sweet, loopy personality. Despite a saggy middle stymied by sappy good intentions, the picture stands as Sandler’s best effort.

Demographically, expect some thing of a trade-off. While all the lovey-dovey stuff might turn off some of his partying young male fans,...

‘Girls5eva’s’ Renee Elise Goldsberry explains why Wickie is ‘ready to be loved’ by the Lunch Lord [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Wickie Roy started Season 2 of “Girls5eva” in album mode and ended it in relationship mode, a development that was as surprising to Renée Elise Goldsberry as it probably was to fans. “We did not see this coming. I, the actor, did not see this coming, but it’s pretty wonderful,” Goldsberry tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above).

In the final two episodes of the season, Wickie meets and quickly falls for Sheawn (Chad L. Coleman), aka the Lunch Lord, whom she first tries to use as a “basic whisperer” to find out what the people like to improve her social media presence. He knows exactly what she’s doing and calls her out on it, and further disarms her by not being phased at all by her outrageous behavior. At one point, Wickie blurts out, “Why do I like you?!”

“In the beginning she’s using him,...

‘Jagged’ Review: Alanis Morissette Narrates Her Origin Story in a Too-Tame Documentary
Image
In the months following the release of Alanis Morissette’s breakout album “Jagged Little Pill,” one question persisted throughout the glowing coverage of the singer-songwriter’s debut: Why was this gal so angry? It’s a question that director Alison Klayman (“Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry”) thoroughly answers in her “Jagged,” but it’s refreshing to see the not-quite fawning profile engage with something a bit more substantive. That’s not to say the film’s subject isn’t substantive — she is — but this focused look at Morissette’s early years seems hellbent on offering up a glossier-than-necessary veneer on a complex story. When it veers away from a predictable timeline and expected beats, “Jagged” hits its high notes.

As was the case with Morissette’s big break, these moments come care of heightened emotion, like a series of magazine headlines that juxtapose “angry” with “hot” with a startling, queasy regularity.
