Some sad news for Young and the Restless and its fans. According to Variety, Wings Hauser, who played Greg Foster on the soap from 1977 to 1981 passed away from natural causes at 78 years of age. More details below.

Wings Hauser’s Acting Legacy

Hauser played a recast of Greg Foster, taking the role over from James Houghton, from 1973 to 1976, and Brian Kerwin, from 1976 to 1977.

Foster was an attorney, brother of Jill Abbott (Jess Walton), and was also Nikki Newman’s (Melody Thomas Scott) first husband.

Hauser would return to the soap in 2010 for three episodes when his mom, Elizabeth “Liz” Foster (Julianna McCarthy) was ill and passed away. After Hauser left the soap in 1981, the role was recast once again, with Howard McGillin stepping into the part.

Wings Hauser, the versatile character actor known for his intense turns in Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling, Vice Squad and Tough Guys Don’t Dance, has died. He was 77.

Hauser died Saturday at his home in Santa Monica after a long battle with Copd, his daughter, Bright Hauser, told The Hollywood Reporter. She noted that he was using an oxygen tank most recently.

Survivors also include his son, actor Cole Hauser, now playing the fixer Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone.

Hauser had his breakthrough when he starred as a psychopath pimp known as Ramrod in Avco Embassy Pictures’ lurid Vice Squad (1982), directed by horror veteran Gary Sherman. He also sang the theme song for the movie, “Neon Slime.”

Wings Hauser, the prolific character actor known for his roles in “Vice Squad,” “The Young and the Restless” and dozens of other films and shows, died March 15 in Los Angeles of natural causes, his wife Cali Lili Hauser confirmed to Variety. He was 78.

“Movie icon Wings Hauser took flight in the arms of his film and music partner, Cali Lili Hauser, at their studio this weekend,” his wife’s statement posted to his Facebook account said. “Wings Hauser’s one of a kind, legendary career spanned 58 years in movies, TV and music working alongside many of the greatest artists in the industry and earning their respect.”

Actor Wings Hauser, who appeared in dozens of roles over the course of his career, has passed away. He was 77 years old.

The news of Hauser's death was posted on his official Facebook account, sharing how he'd died in the arms of his wife, Cali Lili Hauser, with whom he'd been married since 2002. A cause of death was not mentioned in the post, which included an image of Wings and Cali with a dog by the sea.

We have some sad news to share today, as the official Wings Hauser page on social media has revealed that the prolific character actor passed away over the weekend at the age of 77. As the post reads, “Movie icon Wings Hauser took flight in the arms of his film & music partner, Cali Lili Hauser at their studio this weekend.“

Known for having one of the coolest names in cinema history, Wings Hauser was actually born Gerald Dwight Hauser on December 12, 1947. “Wings” was part of a stage name (Wings Livinryte) he used for a 1975 folk music album called Your Love Keeps Me Off the Streets, and he was credited as Wings Livinryte when he appeared on an episode of the TV series Cannon that same year. After that, he moved on to calling himself Wings Hauser.

Hauser made his screen debut with an uncredited appearance in the 1967 film First to Fight.

Prolific character actor Wings Hauser has passed away at the age of 77.

Born in Hollywood to Academy Award-winning father Dwight A. Hauser, Wings Hauser appeared in over 100 films and TV shows throughout his 58-year career.

Outside the genre, Hauser appeared in films like The Insider, A Soldier’s Story, Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time, and Tough Guys Don’t Dance, which earned him an Independent Spirit Award

He also guest starred on such shows as “House,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Mentalist,” “Bones,” “Castle,” “Monk,” “CSI,” “Roseanne,” and “The A-Team.”

Frank Hildebrand, a producer and production manager who most recently worked on Fear the Walking Dead, has died. He was 73.

Hildebrand’s family confirmed to Deadline through a statement from his rep that he died following a brief illness on November 21, a little more than a week before his 74th birthday.

Born and educated in Zurich, Switzerland, Hildebrand began his filmmaking career in the UK before moving to Hollywood in the 1980s, working on such indie films as Vice Squad (1982) and Once Bitten (1985).

He then went on to line produce and supervise on such films as Triumph of the Spirit (1989), Freeway (1996), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Into the Wild (2007), The Runaways (2010), Fair Game (2010) and The Tree of Life (2011). In recent years, Hildebrand served as a producer on the last seven seasons of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead.

Bernadette O’Brien, a costume designer who received an Emmy nomination for her work on an episode of the classic ABC action series “MacGyver,” died in her sleep Monday in Spokane, Wash., according to a family member. She was 90.

Additional credits include “The Exterminator” (1980), “Vice Squad” (1982), “Winners Take All” (1987), “Jake Spanner, Private Eye” (1989), “Carried Away” (1996), “American Tragedy” (2000) and “Dawg” (2002).

After relocating to Los Angeles in 1977, O’Brien made costumes for both films and television shows. She worked on the 1985 film “House,” the 1991 film “For the Boys,” for which Bette Midler received an Oscar nomination, and the 1998 film, “Naked Lies.” O’Brien earned a 1992 Emmy nomination for “MacGyver,” along with Tommy Welsh.

Bernadette O’Brien, a costume designer, wardrobe supervisor and Emmy-nominated costumer who worked on TV’s Murder, She Wrote and MacGyver and films including the Bette Midler-starring For the Boys, has died. She was 90.

O’Brien died Monday in her sleep at an assisted living facility in Spokane, Washington, her grandson Robinson O’Brien-Bours told The Hollywood Reporter.

O’Brien also handled costumes for the features Vice Squad (1982), House (1985), Mobsters (1991), Another Stakeout (1993) and Cries of Silence (1996); for the TV series T.J. Hooker and Beyond Belief: Fact of Fiction; and for the 2000 telefilm American Tragedy.

Martin Scorsese is a longtime fan of indie filmmaker Ti West.

Scorsese penned a letter to the New York Times to applaud West’s “X” trilogy which recently concluded with “MaXXXine.” Mia Goth starred in all three films as both characters Maxine and Pearl, with each feature taking place in a different decade. West deployed the popular aesthetics for each respective era for the trio of films, as Scorsese explains.

According to the Oscar-winning filmmaker, West’s “X” films all embody a “different type of horror, related to different eras in American moviemaking.”

The first feature “X” is “the ’70s, the slasher era,” as Scorsese wrote. Meanwhile, prequel “Pearl” showcases the “’50s melodrama in vivid saturated color,” while “MaXXXine” captured the “’80s Hollywood, rancid, desperate” onscreen.

The films are “three linked stories set within three different moments in movie culture, reflecting back on the greater culture,” as Scorsese penned.

Goth told Ireland’s Entertainment.ie journalist Brian Lloyd in the below video that she shadowed a sex worker before starring in Ti West’s conclusion to his trilogy love letter to classic Hollywood.

“I was living in New York at that time and I was introduced to a stripper and I spent quite a lot of time with that stripper and I would get to know her and I would ask questions and that was really helpful,” Goth said. “She would then take me to these events. One in particular, it was a crazy party in New York. It felt very much like ‘Eyes Wide Shut.’ I don’t know how I got in but I was like kind of in the corner witnessing everything. Once I felt like I got enough information, I went away because it was quite intense.

Writer/director Ti West trilogy of films starring Mia Goth — "X," "Pearl," and now "MaXXXine" — are, first and foremost, a solid trio of character-based horror films. Taken at face value, they tell an eerie, sexy, and violent cautionary tale about two women, Pearl and Maxine (both played by Goth), whose ambitions for stardom lead them to commit sinful acts.

Taken metaphorically, however, the films have a ton to say about the history of cinema itself, with a particular focus on the tense relationship between prurience and art that's existed within the medium since its inception. Horror movies and pornographic films have long been associated with each other, and West draws on that connection to explore the effects cinema has on everything from standards of youth and beauty -- particularly when it comes to women -- as well as the American Dream of going from rags to riches.

With “MaXXXine,” writer-director Ti West completes the trilogy he began with “X” and followed with the prequel “Pearl,” shepherding audiences through three bloodstained stories of ambition in as many years. After himself infiltrating Hollywood’s ecosystem as a scrappy outsider with acclaimed projects like 2009’s “House of the Devil” and 2011’s “The Innkeepers,” the three-quel marks West’s biggest film to date. Even so, its potential for success presents him many of the same risks faced by his protagonist Maxine (Mia Goth), who hopes to move past a troubled, violent — and to some, disreputable — past in order to fulfill her larger silver-screen dreams.

IndieWire can exclusively announce that A24 will be re-releasing Ti West’s franchise starter “X” for one night only in theaters on June 18. Audiences will also get a preview of “MaXXXine” with a post-credit preview.

The slow burn is a somewhat lost and misunderstood art. I say somewhat lost because A24 sure tries their damnedest to give us that once or even a few times a year. Slow burn movies, when done right, are a thing of beauty. They take their time to get you where They want you to go but don’t have to skimp on things like gore, sex, violence, or shock. The Italians mastered it, particularly with their Giallo genre and some of the greatest slow burn horror comes from the early 70s to the mid 80s. Stanley Kubrick's 1975 epic "Barry Lyndon" is one of the most beautifully photographed movies ever committed to celluloid. The film's cinematographer John Alcott had previously shot "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "A Clockwork Orange" for Kubrick, and would win an Academy Award for his work on "Lyndon." Alcott would also shoot "The Shining," as well as the sleazy but gorgeous-looking B-movies "Terror Train," "Vice Squad," and "The Beastmaster." 

The warm, dim, flame-dappled, Vermeer-like shimmer of "Barry Lyndon" came from Kubrick's insistence that the film be shot entirely with natural light. Because the film was set in the 1770s and 1780s, that meant there were to be no electric lights whatsoever. If a scene was set outdoors, the lighting would be dictated by where the sun was -- and what the weather was like -- at time of shooting. Indoor scenes set at night would be lit with nothing less than hundreds and hundreds of candles.

This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.

Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. The fourth Gardner/Levy United Artists horror/sci-fi picture of ’57-’58 is another trip into a jungle’s Heart of Darkness, where awaits a deadly satellite fallen from orbit. Have we missed something Spectacular? Fantastic? Incredible? This seventy minutes of cheap program filler is nobody’s favorite, but CineSavant embraces Sci-Fi orphans of every description. Stars Arthur Franz and Kathleen Crowley can’t have been pleased by the result.

In a plotline nobody saw coming (let alone a movie being made about it) a young Bernie Sanders swears a blood oath to Joseph Stalin in the trailer for the upcoming satirical comedy, “Free Lunch Express.”

The movie is clearly not trying to portray Sanders in a positive light. For example, at one point, a young Sanders can be seen in front of a propaganda poster of Stalin, saying, “I totally pledge with this blood oath to dedicate my life to never picking up a dinner check, never donating to charity, and like in the glorious Soviet Union, making sure the government pays for everything.”

While it may be difficult to gauge time in the world right now, Halloween is indeed right around the corner, and Scream Factory is looking to make it a memorable spooky season with a Blu-ray release for Terror in the Aisles and Steelbook Blu-rays of Motel Hell and Pumpkinhead.

The Steelbooks will include all bonus features from Scream Factory's previous Blu-ray releases of Pumpkinhead and Motel Hell, and the full special features for Terror in the Aisles will be revealed at a later date.

I long ago gave up keeping track of all the aberrant vampire movies that were produced after horror became a direct-to-video staple and finally a streaming staple.

Revenge films have been around for a very long time; one can look to The Virgin Spring (1960), Straw Dogs (1971), or Death Wish (1974) for their rise from serious drama to movies of a more exploitive nature. Psychic Killer (1975) adds a unique twist to the tale by having astral projection as a means to the violent ends. Quirky and laden with creative deaths, it very much embraces its weirdness, providing a fun carpet ride for the whole family (at least according to its mind-boggling PG rating).

Released stateside in December by Avco Embassy Pictures, Psychic Killer, aka The Kirlian Force, only cost $250,000 and came and went like a phantom in the night. Critics paid it no mind either, and it was relegated to video store shelves and gas station rentals. As all lovers of crime, suspense thriller, war, western, horror and science fiction films know, creating a truly great cinematic villain is no easy task. When it happens, it’s virtually impossible to forget that character.

We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains of the 1980’s.

The criteria for this article is the same as my previous article Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct or indirect lethal threat. The villains can be either individuals or small groups that act as one unit.

The villains must be human or human in appearance, so no shape-shifting alien from John Carpenter’s amazing 1982 The Thing, no Aliens from James Cameron’s classic 1986 sequel and no Predator from John McTiernan’s beloved 1987 film of the same name.

Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes...

If you think that line was said by Clint Eastwood in one of his Dirty Harry films, you’d be mistaken. It was uttered in 1982, the year before Sudden Impact, in director Gary Sherman’s sensationally sleazy Vice Squad, a sordid but exciting look at life on the seedy strip of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard when the sun goes down. The guys at Destroy The Brain.com usually feature horror fare at their monthly Late Night Grindhouse midnight series, but this weekend’s offering is indeed Vice Squad, a crime film more in line with a pair of Linda Blair movies (Chained Heat and Savage Streets) they showed last year (appropriate since Vice Squad star Wings Hauser dated Linda Blair for several years).

After showing a classic like Suspiria, we like to follow up with a film that not too many people might be aware of. The people that have seen the film have never forgotten it. Wings Hauser pulls in an iconic performance that put him on the map. Vice Squad was directed by Gary Sherman who a year prior collaborated with the creators of Alien to direct Dead & Buried.

Vice Squad is one of the products of grindhouse cinema in its last decade. It needs to be seen to be believed. In 2008 six reality television show contestants spent seven nights in an abandoned and haunted asylum. The show never aired but an editor for the network was able to piece together some footage. The prize for staying all seven nights was a share of one million dollars that was to be split amongst any contestants that didn’t leave. No prize money was ever awarded.

As mentioned before, there were so many good films to choose from at the Phoenix Film Festival, dubbed the friendliest film festival to independent filmmakers, that it was extremely hard to catch them all. There are four specific films I will attempt to get screeners of and give a review later next week. From what I’ve heard, you’ll want to hear about them.

Unfortunately, I missed the much talked about documentaries, “Thespians” and “Wild Horse, Wild Ride”. “Thespians” is an involving tale of four acting troupes competing in the largest high school competition in the world and I heard that it did bring some grown men to tears.
