The European Film Academy is honoring German filmmaker Wim Wenders with the European Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wenders, who has been nominated for three Oscars and a Grammy, is known for works such as the Road Movie trilogy (1974-1976), Paris, Texas (1984), and Wings of Desire (1987).

“With this award, we celebrate Wim Wenders’ outstanding body of work which keeps exploring and experimenting with a curious eye and an open mind,” said Matthijs Wouter Knol, CEO and director of the European Film Academy. “As one of the founding members of the European Film Academy, its Chairman from 1990 until 1995 and President until 2020, Wim Wenders has a strong connection to the European Film Academy and we’re additionally happy to also celebrate his outstanding commitment and say thank you.”

Wenders began his career as a film critic for various German publications, and was later a founding member of film distributor Filmverlag der Autoren.

A founding member and president of the European Film Academy from 1996 to 2020, Wender’s films have received multiple awards including a Palme d’Or and Bafta for 1984’s Paris, Texas and a Golden Lion for 1982’s The State of Things.

He has won a European Film Award three times for 1988’s Wings of Desire, 1999’s Buena Vista Social Club and 2011’s Pina. His 2000 film Million Dollar Hotel won a Berlinale Silver Bear.

Now in its seventh year at the beachy southern edge of Queens, the Rockaway Film Festival has revealed its 2024 lineup, which IndieWire shares exclusively. The festival runs August 17-25, 2024 and features outdoor screenings and conversations at the Rff’s regular yearlong venue, the Arverne Cinema.

This year’s highlights include Jamil McGinnis and Pat Heywood’s looping, multi-screen installation “Waking Up (For the First Time),” a tribute to experimental animator Faith Hubley, with live music performances and DJ sets featuring members of indie bands Animal Collective and Mgmt.

Special events include bio-art and stop-motion animated workshops, children’s cinema, the U.S. premiere of “The Future Perfect” director Nele Wohlatz’s comedy of misunderstandings “Sleep with Your Eyes Open,” the New York premiere of Juan Palacios and Sofie Husum Johannesen’s “As the Tide Comes In,” plus the world premieres of Corey Hughes’ “Your Final Meditation” and Sam Fleischner’s “Jetty.

Wim Wenders and Thierry Frémaux signalled their support on Saturday for the Hollywood actors strike as the industrial action hits its 100th day.

“I understand the actors who all want to profit a little more… rather than there being just a dozen big names who have high salaries… while all the others earn nothing or very little,” Wenders told a press conference at the Lumière Film Festival.

The German director is guest of honor at the 15th edition of the festival, spearheaded by double-hatted Cannes Delegate General Frémaux in his role of director of the Institut Lumière in Lyon, preserving the legacy of cinema pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumière.

German filmmaking legend Wim Wenders will head up this year’s competition jury for the Tokyo International Film Festival, organizers announced on Monday.

Wenders is currently riding high — and his long-running artistic connections to Japan are more apparent than ever. The director’s most recent feature, Perfect Days, recently premiered at Cannes in competition and was widely hailed as his finest fiction film in years. An intimate character study following a middle-aged Tokyo man who has pared his life down to a routine of service and small pleasures, it won Cannes best actor prize for its inimitable lead, veteran Japanese character actor Koji Yakusho. The Hollywood Reporter‘s critic summed the film up as simply, “ineffably lovely.”

German filmmaker Wim Wenders is to preside over the international competition jury of Tokyo International Film Festival, where he will also host a retrospective of influential Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu.

It will mark the first time Wenders has attended the festival since 2011, when his documentary Pina screened in the festival’s special screening section.

Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days” is a hot property in Cannes, and it’s yet to even premiere.

Several buyers are currently circling the Japan-set, music-infused title from master filmmaker Wenders, which bows in competition on Thursday. Sources tell Variety that interested parties so far include Utopia, Mubi, Sideshow and Janus Films and Sony Pictures Classics.

Wenders’ “Perfect Days” follows Tokyo toilet cleaner Hirayama, who seems content with his simple life. Outside of his everyday routine, he enjoys his passion for books and, in particular, for music. Over the course of the film, a series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past.

“Memoirs of a Geisha” star Koji Yakusho — whom some critics have tipped as a contender for Cannes’ best actor prize on Saturday — leads the cast as Hirayama. He also co-starred in “Babel,” a film that was honored by the Cannes Film Festival and earned Golden Globes and Academy Awards.

Manchester's Home has announced it is to host a season focused on the act of filmmaking itself.

The season is the first to be announced following confirmation that Home will reopen on 17 May if all goes to plan in the UK Government coronavirus roadmap for England.

The showcase will open with Wim Wenders' film-within-a-film, The State Of Things, and will also feature David Fincher's Oscar-nominated Mank, about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz.

Home’s creative director for film and culture Jason Wood said: “At a moment when cinemas have been closed for a protracted period and in an era in which streaming films has become commonplace, The Reverse Gaze is a reminder of the art and endeavour of filmmaking. Sad news again today, as it is now being reported that veteran movie character actor Allen Garfield has passed away due to complications caused by the coronavirus strain Covid-19.

He was 80 years old. The actor died whilst residing at the Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills, California. Garfield first appeared on the big screen in the 1968 comedy-drama Orgy Girls '69 having studied his craft at the Actors Studio in New York with Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg. Garfield became well-known for playing corrupt and villainous businessmen and politicians.

Allen Garfield's extensive resume includes roles in movies such as Francis Ford Coppola's mysterious thriller The Conversation alongside Gene Hackman, the Eddie Murphy action comedy Beverley Hills Cop II, in which he starred as police chief Harold Lutz, the critically acclaimed action comedy The Stunt Man in 1980 alongside Peter O'Toole, the political comedy-drama The Candidate with Robert Redford, as well as many others.

This year’s lineup presents 12 films from eight countries on five continents. All selected films will compete for the Platform Prize, to be awarded by a jury made up of award-winning filmmakers Chen Kaige, Małgorzata Szumowska, and Wim Wenders.

The program will open with the world premiere of The Death of Stalin, from award-winning director-writer Armando Iannucci (In the Loop, Veep). The historical epic follows the final days leading up to the Soviet dictator’s death.

Argentine film-maker Lucrecia Martel and veteran producer Paulo Branco have been confirmed as the final two ‘masters’ at the Doha Film Institute’s talent development event Qumra.

They will join previously announced mentor-speakers Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, French auteur Bruno Dumont and creative documentarian Rithy Panh at the third edition of the bespoke event, running March 3 to 8, 2017.

ROME -- Filmmaker Wim Wenders will head the jury at the 65th Venice Film Festival, organizers said Friday, extending a 35-year relationship between the German Oscar nominee and the Venice event.

Wenders first appeared on the Venice Lido in 1972 with Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter (The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty Kick), his first feature film. Wenders won the Golden Lion in Venice a decade later for Der Stand der Dinge (The State of Things), and he has taken home two sidebar prizes from Venice since then.

Wenders received an Oscar nomination for his 1999 documentary Buena Vista Social Club.

His nomination silences weeks of rumors that Meryl Streep -- another Venice regular -- was in line for the job as jury president.

He will preside over a jury that will pick a winner from a 22-film competition lineup that for each of the past two years was made up entirely of world premieres. He also is the first jury president of Marco Mueller's second mandate as the Venice artistic director.
