Smita Patil is regarded as one of the finest and greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema, and she has won several accolades in her career. She was a woman of substance who left a mark with her portrayal of strong and independent women. The actress has worked with some of the most prominent actors of that time, including Amitabh Bachchan, Amol Palekar, and more. However, this article is about the time when she had a bad dream about one of her co-stars who ended up in a near-fatal accident a day later.

Director Ramesh Sippy delves deep into the making of the classic, historic, enduring hit Sholay with Subhash K Jha as the iconic film, which starred Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, celebrates 50 years since it released.
I am sure you are sick and tired of talking about Sholay over and over again?
I am sure you will find a way to take our conversations through alleys that I haven’t been through before. Besides talking about a film which made history on so many levels can never be tiresome.
So, Rameshji, let’s start. So, you know, it’s been 50 years and of course, we are all celebrating. But somewhere do you...

Bollywood has always been a land of transformation. While some actors rose to fame through romance, others made their mark through tragedy or action. However, a few rare talents began their cinematic journey portraying terrifying villains, only to surprise everyone by becoming audience-favorite comedians later in their careers.
Here’s a look at five such versatile actors who redefined their image in Indian cinema.
1. Paresh Rawal: From Intense Villain to Comic Genius
Paresh Rawal’s early career was filled with intense and often negative characters. In films like Sir, his portrayal of Ram Avtar was both powerful and chilling. He also played a negative role in Andaz Apna Apna, where his dual character added layers of tension and humor. However, once Rawal stepped into the world of comedy with films like Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, Welcome, and Maalamaal Weekly, he became a household name. His comic timing and...

Honest truth? Kayoze Irani’s feature-film debut is not as unwatchable as what the reviews tell you. We are living in the era of pavlovian responses: if one critic likes a film blatantly ripped off from a Korean tearjerker, everyone else roars in approval.
It is like being hypnotized at a rock stadium. We will, we will… shock you! Sarzameen tries very hard to shock. And that is where it goes wrong. It tries too hard. You cannot have twists in the plot which make no sense just because they will make the audience gasp. It is like designating Kajol the killer in Gupt.
I mention Kajol with a reason. She is the mother of a radicalized Kashmiri boy, who is married to an army officer named Vijay Menon, primarily to justify Prithviraj’s South Indian accent. Early in their “happily married” life, there are signs of friction as their speech-impaired son Harman feels neglected.

In another great installment of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha looks back at Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan which released in 2010.
Udaan which completed 15 years on July 16, was a ballsy debut by Vikramaditya Motwane, who once assisted the angst-laden Sanjay Leela Bhansali and then his angst-cousin Anurag Kashyap. You can see the lasting impression of both the senior creators in the way Motwane designs the uneasy and violent relationship between the 17-year old Rohan (Rajat Barmecha) and his tyrannical father (Ronit Roy) who’s almost villainous in his despotism.
When Udaan is not busy trying to be a regular nudge-nudge-wink-wink coming-of-age film (Billy Elliot-goes-to-Jamshedpur) it gives us some great moments of cinema , done in shades that leave the camera lens far behind to romance the very core of middleclass life (no doubt corroded and outdated) in the soporific ‘steel town’ . The film starts with a mildly amusing boys-disastrous-night-out-from-boarding-school...

Subhash K Jha turns the spotlight on the brilliance of Dilip Kumar on reel as one of the finest actors, comedy and drama and everything in between, in the world.
He didn’t act. He reacted. Dilip Kumar was to the acting profession what Lata Mangeshkar was to playback singing. Take them away, and what are we left with in Hindi cinema?
Born as Yusuf Khan in a family of 12 children, the future doyen of on-screen dramatics moved with his family from his native town in Peshawar to Mumbai, where the Khans made a living as fruit sellers. For a brief while, Yusuf Khan even worked in an army canteen, when Devika Rani, the wife of the legendary Himanshu Rai of the Bombay Talkies studios, spotted the lanky but intense young man in a crowd.

Looking back at the gritty political thriller Sarkar, in this fascinating installment of Subhash K Jha’s This Day That Year series, where we also hear from the star Amitabh Bachchan about making the Rsm Gopal Varma film which released in 2005.
In Sarkar, nothing is as apparent as it seems. Take a look at the plot: a saviour-of-the-masses hero, his two heir-apparent – the bad son and good son, the tussle of power between the two sons in a world that Varma has over the years patented and portrayed inside-out.
Dark, gleaming, ominous corridors hiding anguished pain, characters who look like they could do with a bath… and a massage to release some of the nervous tension that comes from a blurred perception of crime and morality – these characterize the givens in a Varma film.
Sarkar too takes us through a world governed by the rules of survival of the fittest.

Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 all-time hit Sholay had its world premiere in Italy, on Friday, in the restored, uncut version at the prestigious Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna. The screening, which celebrates the classic film’s 50th anniversary, took place on June 27, 2025, at the open-air Piazza Maggiore.
Speaking on the occasion, Sholay’s veteran director Ramesh Sippy said, “Did I ever think Sholay would come so far? Not at all! I remember when we were making it, we were confident we were making a good film. But a film that would shatter all records and will go on to be regarded as the one of the greatest films of all times? No, we never expected that.”
He remembers Sholay was declared a flop on release. “The reviews were negative. There was no audience. But it picked up (at the box office) in the second week.”

Amitabh Bachchan, in this special interview speaks with Subhash K Jha about Suneel Darshan’s Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, which also featured Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, and Karisma Kapoor and shares what it was like to work, once again, with Raakhee Gulzar.
Suneel Darshan was completely bowled over by your professionalism and expertise during the shooting of Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love?
The feeling is mutual. I think Suneel is extremely focussed and organized. Long before Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love went on the floors, he knew exactly what he wanted to do on screen, down to the music and songs. That, I think, is the forte of this millennial generation. Filmmakers in the past were also organized in their own way. But what they had it all in their heads. This millennials directors puts it down on paper. And there’s a whole battery of...

The Mehta Boys
Starring Boman Irani and Avinash Tiwari
Directed by Boman Irani
I was amused and exasperated to wake up to see a review claiming that a ‘brilliant’ Avinash Tiwari ‘outshines’ Boman Irani in The Mehta Boys (now streaming on Amazon Prime Video).
Firstly, this is quite untrue, and secondly, this is not a kabaddi match. But a delicately poised father-son mellow drama, where any effort by the two principal actors to outshine each other would have landed the film flat on its face.
Irani and Tiwari, as father and son Shiv and Amay playing a hostile pair on screen, are fulsomely aligned as actors, so much so that I wondered how much they must have worked towards achieving this level of compatibility on screen.
Boman Irani’s first stab at direction stabs you in the heart. The father-son conflict is as old as Ramesh Sippy’s Shakti and...

A Real Pain
Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin
Written and Directed by Jesse Eisenberg
Opening all over India on January 17
Travel films are normally an excuse for meandering plots and touristic sanctions. Not this one! Not this time. Jesse Eisenberg’s visitation to the troubled history of Poland through the lenses of contemporary relationships, fragile and unpredictable as they are, is a real ‘tour’ de force, the stress of course being on ‘tour’ .
It is an easy formula to put two contrasting characters in a travel film together. We have seen that predictable route taken a zillion times. What makes the cousins David and Benji different from the other buddy-buddy twosomes, is the kinetic energy that the two actors derive from their travel experience.
Poland , once a land of unspeakable and unpardonable violence against Jews, is no country for vacationing. But here is the thing: writer-director-actor Jesse Eisenberg has...

It is one of the apparent paradoxes that while Duryodhan is blamed for triggering the Mahabharata, in the real sense all the fathers after Duryodhan and even around Duryodhan are blind towards the love they have for their sons, and they are in most of the cases oblivious to its repercussions. Hindi cinema has celebrated this relationship which is catalyzed on blindness since eons. We all are Dhritrastras in actuality.
But Jailer seems to have made the argument stand on its head, and it is one of the primary reasons, inspite of the usual kitsch that it has been packed with that it has achieved the phenomenal success. Here is a father, who comes out of retirement to save his son, a modern Dhritarashtra, but when he finds that the son is recalcitrant and has erred on the wrong side of law, he gives him a long rope, but when...

Amitabh Bachchan's journey of five decades to become the Bollywood "Shahenshah" was not always a smooth ride. Indeed, his life is nothing short of brilliant biopic material. Early rejections were followed by a phase when he made his mark as a promising actor, which was soon overshadowed by the kind of superstardom Bollywood never saw before or after. When the superstar tried his hand at film entrepreneurship, he went bankrupt, only to bounce back and claim supremacy as a super brand and respectability as an icon.
The first reaction of the industry all those years ago, however, was far from welcoming. His tall and lanky frame, and the baritone of his voice, were deemed unsuitable for Bollywood's image of a perfect hero back then. These factors were pointed out as flaws, and reasons why he wouldn't be able to make it big in the industry.

Mubi's retrospective Melancholy & Deadpan: The Films of Martín Rejtman is showing September – November, 2019.The Magic Gloves“I can’t go on. I’ll go on,” Samuel Beckett wrote in The Unnamable. A similar motto underlines the sly, darkly humorous films of the Argentine filmmaker Martín Rejtman. In an interview with Film Comment, after the premiere of his film, The Magic Gloves (2003), at the Locarno Film Festival, Rejtman commented on the stupendous amounts of anti-depressives that his characters take in the movie: “It’s a way of showing how in life you go on, and things don’t affect you so much, and you still go on, and you still go on.” Asked whether his characters are depressed, Rejtman noted that a personal echo of his father’s manic-depressive illness might, in a small way, tinge his films. The depression is certainly a recurring theme; it re-appears in Rejtman’s latest short,...

Bollywood’s new year is set to begin with the intensity of the unusual and power packed casting of superstar Amitabh Bachchan with the multi-faceted Farhan Akhtar in Wazir. This first release of the year, directed by Bijoy Nambiar, is also a talk of the town with one of the most melodious romantic songs of recent times Tere Bin. Not only this, the film will see Amitabh Bachchan playing a paralysed chess grandmaster with a very unusual look.
Given its storyline and the powerful trailer, with music to match, it is believed that Wazir will interest teenagers and young adults. To reach young and upwardly mobile audiences who spend more time on the internet and mobile phones than television, two stars of the film – Farhan Akhtar and Aditi Rao Hydari, have featured on the latest episode of the hotstar Originals series ‘M Bole Toh’, sharing memories from their childhoods, and...

Writers around the globe are acknowledged to be the key for a movie's success but it is pathetic that Bollywood has always given them a step motherly treatment. However the writers' pair, who changed the trend and demanded remunerations at par with stars, are unarguably the only star writer duo Salim Javed, who penned hit movies like Sholay, Deewaar, Zanjeer, Don, Trishul, Shakti, Mr. India etc.
Salim Khan in an interview said, "The reason why we demanded such high remunerations was because we were confident of our skills and wrote scripts that were hard-bound, a trend that was initiated by us."

Legendary director, Ramesh Sippy is going back to the floor with a cool new film that what we hear is a quirky romance. Titled Shimla Mirchi, the film has a very interesting cast that includes one of his favorite heroines.
Ramesh Sippy’s cult classic Sholay was released 39 years ago in 1975. In that film, he created the character of Basanti with his favourite actress Hema Malini. Now, after almost 4 decades, the duo will be working together once again in Shimla Mirchi.
Ramesh Sippy always chose to make diverse films right through his career with many blockbusters to his name. To begin with the mature love story Andaz, to the comedy Seeta aur Geeta, to an action adventure Sholay, to the slick action Shaan to the family drama with Shakti to the romantic love story Saagar. Like many of his films, this new project will follow the path of titles beginning with S.

But judge Karan Johar used his “jhoothameter” and said that Ranvir was fooling around, the mirror ball would say who was safe from the eliminations.
This week’s theme was Made in India which meant the contestants would be performing on dance styles that originated from India.
Actor Ashish Sharma & his choreographer Shampa were the first to perform. They danced on the song ‘Har Kisi Ko Nahin Milta’ from the film Boss.

Ramesh Sippy, the maker of India's greatest blockbuster Sholay, is one of those rare filmmakers who have the ability to make a commercial film within the framework of a parallel cinema. Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan on the silver screen yet made an artistically superlative film. Glamsham.Com wishes birthday greetin...

Unarguably one of Indian cinema's greatest films, Sholay which released in 1975 is all set for a new release in the 3D format. Producer Jayantilal Gada is responsible for taking Sholay to a new level. But without the director's consent. The technological conversion has not gone down well with this monumental film's director Ramesh Sippy who has not only decided to dissociate himself completely from the project but also opted to take the producers of Sholay 3D to court. Speaking for the first time on the issue, the soft spoken Ramesh Sippy said, "My logic for taking the matter to court is very simple. No one asked me before converting my film to a new format. No one took me into confidence. There was no attempt to contact me. I read about it in the papers. I had no choice but to go to court." Mr. Sippy says he has no...
