This has the English title "The Rape."
A woman named Michiko is raped by a man she barely knows while on her way home late one night from her boyfriend's. Everything after follows.
This is a drama but moreso a character study. This follows Michiko and how her life as well as the people around her respond after the rape. We come to find that she is as complex as other people in real life.
First, I must say that Yûko Tanaka who plays Michiko gives an Oscar worthy performance. She raises this film from a good one to an outstanding film.
Based on a novel (I've not read) this is an emotional story. It actually tells a lot about society and people than just the one character. Still it's the main character that ties the story & other characters together.
This is not a Pink Eiga tho it's listed that way some places. There is some nudity and a few sex scenes but nothing explicit or erotic.
You don't have to be a fan of Japanese cinema to enjoy this movie. Yes you need to read subtitles but it is so worth it. Plus everything in this film carries over to Western sensibilities and is still valid over 40 years later. I highly recommend this movie.
