In his review of the new horror film Immaculate (you can read it Here), JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said the movie – which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks! – is “a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies.” During a recent post-screening Q&a at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, Mohan also revealed that one particular scene in the movie was inspired by the work one of my favorite grindhouse era filmmakers, Jack Hill – and that same scene also had to be salvaged with the help of Saw X director Kevin Greutert!

Marlene Clark, an actor who appeared on “Sanford and Son,” the horror movie “Ganja & Hess” and several other films of the ’60s and ’70s, died on May 18. She was 85.

Clark starred in several films ahead of landing her breakout role as Lamont Lawson’s (played by Demond Wilson) wife Janet in “Sanford and Son.” She later starred in the 1973 horror movie “Ganja & Hess” alongside Duane Jones.

Clark was born and raised in Harlem, N.Y., and spent time in West Virginia during her summers. She returned to New York after attending Morristown Jr. College in Tennessee and enrolled in City College. While at school, Clark participated in school plays, igniting her interest in the acting world.

Clark later moved to Los Angeles with her then-husband Billy Dee Williams. She began her career in entertainment as a fashion model before landing her first role in the 1968 film “For Love of Ivy.

Marlene Clark, best known for her portrayals of Lamont’s girlfriend Janet in the 1970s NBC sitcom Sanford & Son and as Ganja Meda in the 1973 horror film Ganja & Hess, has died.

Demond Wilson, who played Lamont on Sanford & Son, paid tribute to Clark on Twitter, writing “Rip beautiful actress Marlene Clark. . . It was a delight to work with you…,” noting she died on May 18. Wilson listed her age as 73, but that has not been confirmed.

Clark joined Sanford & Son in the comedy’s fifth season in 1976 as a recurring opposite Wilson, remaining through the series’ final season the following year.

Raised in the Harlem section of New York City, Clark was a fashion model before her transition to acting.

Mubi has announced its lineup of streaming offerings for next month, including an epic six-film series dedicated to the brand new restorations of the films of Nina Menkes. The slate also includes a Brian De Palma double bill with Obsession and Body Double as well as Paul Schrader’s Hardcore.

I first saw Braid (aka Dying to Play) at the North Bend Film Festival in 2018. I immediately loved it. The colors, the story, the bizarreness of it all was right up my alley. But there was something else about it that really struck me. It was something I couldn’t quite define, but it made me comfortable. I felt safe with it, in a strange way.

What began as one of those exploitation cheapies with three women, comes alive with the dynamic Robbie Lee, Joanne Nail and Monica Gayle — even with all the sexist cruelty on view, the no-limits performances feel liberating, energizing. Just like his member, this segment is short and sweet.

Rolling Thunder is one of my favorite films. I’m not just saying that because it is next month’s Late Nite Grindhouse screening, it includes almost everything I loved in 70’s cinema. It is a vigilante story, a character study, a road movie and a great, justifying finale. It doesn’t hurt that it feels, at times, an echo of co-writer, Paul Schrader’s previous work, Taxi Driver (which is definitely in my top 5 of my favorite films).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the New York University Orphan Film Symposium will present this year’s installment of “The Real Indies: A Close Look At Orphan Films,” a two-day screening series on Friday, October 31, and Saturday, November 1, at the Academy Theater in New York City.

The series serves as an opportunity to re-discover and re-appreciate orphan films – rarely seen, previously neglected cinematic works deserving preservation and revival. This darkly humorous, deeply demented 1964 curiosity is a genuine cult phenomenon, one with a reputation that grows by the year. By the time it came out in 1968, hardly anyone cared. However, it's subsequently found an audience, so today we can enjoy it on a rather well-assembled Blu-ray.

It's usually classed as a horror film or a B-movie but this slice of American gothic doesn't fit neatly into either category. It concerns the Merrye family, a clan so inbred they have a rare malady named after them. Merrye syndrome affects one branch of this rotten family tree, causing regression ("A progressive deterioration of the mental faculty … a rotting of the brain, so to speak") to set in as they reach adolescence. The Hudson Horror Show will be taking place on December 1st and we wanted to give our readers more information on the event, including the great line-up of films that they will be screening. As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. It was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried and eventually gave up.

This is by the far the biggest and most diverse lineup of movies we have ever presented.

Living in the tri-state area (that would be New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania for me) means that you have to watch the message boards for new 35mm screenings of old, rare, amazing horror films. I had stumbled across the Hudson Horror Show a couple years ago and have only attended one, but it was a game changer. The Hudson Horror Show is a semi-annual marathon of horror movies show on the big screen in 35mm in Pougkeepsie, NY. One is usually in May; the other December. It’s a great crowd who knows how to laugh and scream in a theater. These are the guys who showed Cannibal Holocaust and handed out vomit bags among other little goodies.

My first experience with the Hhs guys was perfect. A pile of cheap but worthwhile vendor tables, strange mini mall Poughkeepsie and five horror movies that rocked my socks. Cannibal Holocaust!

Quietly becoming one of New York's most impressive and unique classic horror film festivals, the Hudson Horror Show has announced the lineup and date for the sixth installment of the fest. Read on and dig the impressive roster of movies.

Anchored by Chris Alo and Tad Leger, the Hudson Horror Show team have been consistently offering extremely entertaining 12-hour film fests for the past three years, and their sixth offering looks to be no different. Headlined (or be-headlined…Baa-hahaha!) by Re-Animator, the currently lineup also includes Conan: The Barbarian (which is celebrating its 30th anniversary), Phantasm II, The Devil's Rain and Switchblade Sisters as well as a mystery sixth film. Now that's a gritty line-up if I've ever seen one!

On “From Manila With Love,” a 45-minute making-of documentary included on the new Women In Cages Collection triple-feature set, legendary exploitation director Jack Hill (Spider Baby, Switchblade Sisters) rattles off the compulsory elements of a women-in-prison movie. At a minimum, Hill notes, it must have women showering, fighting in mud, and being tortured. Hosing scenes are optional. In the next breath, Hill likens these obligations to Shakespeare’s need to include swordfights and a comic-relief character in his plays to meet the audience’s expectations. You had me at “Alice and Wonderland with machine guns.” That description is the one-sentence grabber for Zack Snyder’s (300, Watchmen) next flick, Sucker Punch. A level of all girl kick-assery that hasn’t been seen since the days of Switchblade Sisters, the girls of Sucker Punch are out to outdo even the likes of Hit Girl from Kick Ass. I got a black eye just from looking at this photo.

You had me at the title. Ticked Off Trannies With Knives was one of the most buzzed about films at Tribeca this year and you want to know why? Yep, the title. It’s a title that is tailor made for the midnight slot. Hell, at this point it’s hard to remember which came first – midnight movies or the exploitation genre. Now, since grind house went art house, exploitation has received a lot of overdue praise. Directors like Jack Hill (Coffee, Switchblade Sisters, Spider Baby) and Brian Trenchard-Smith (Turkey Shoot, Dead End Drive-in) have been embraced by a larger audience lately, largely due to the cultural influence of younger director’s like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Craig Brewer. They helped make cult cool.
