While Andy Serkis has appeared on The Simpsons once before, the iconic actor played dual roles in season 36’s latest outing. The Simpsons season 37’s renewal hasn’t been announced yet and, by the looks of things, the long-running series is pulling out all the stops to ensure its continued survival. It might be hard to imagine a world without The Simpsons, but recent seasons have seen the series inject new life and creativity into the world of Springfield and the town’s most famous family. According to Vulture and many others, The Simpsons is finally good again.

Stephen King has a wide taste in literature, loving novels like "Lord of the Flies" and "Watership Down" over horror literature and weird fiction, but that's not to say he doesn't pay attention to other masters of the genre. The bulk of King's novels are horror stories, and he clearly took a lot of inspiration from the pulp horror, genre magazines, and EC Comics of his childhood. Indeed, King wrote "Creepshow" in 1982, openly paying homage to the "Tales from the Crypt" and "Shock SuspenStories" issues he read as a youth in the 1950s. King wears his horror influences on his sleeve.
As for the literature that inspired him, King recalls reading a lot as a child, and that he loved a wide variety of books. He enjoyed the fantastical stories of Ray Bradbury, the Nancy Drew mysteries of Carolyn Keene, and, yes, even horror novels like Robert Bloch's "Psycho.

Arch Enemy have announced their 12th studio album, Blood Dynasty, set for release March 28th, 2025, via Century Media Records.
The album news comes after the veteran metal band released the surprise single “Dream Stealer” at the end of July. That tune will be one of 11 tracks on Blood Dynasty.
Founding Arch Enemy guitarist Michael Amott stated, “This new album pushes the boundaries of what we’ve done before — it’s everything you’ve come to expect from this band, and then some! We can’t wait for you to hear it and feel the energy we’ve poured into every track. Welcome to the Blood Dynasty!”
Along with Amott, the band is rounded out by singer Alissa White-Gluz, bassist Sharlee D’Angelo, drummer Daniel Erlandsson, and new guitarist Joey Concepcion (who took over the spot vacated by Jeff Loomis in 2023).

In the time of chimpanzees he was a monkey, but now, after 30-plus years of practice, practice, practice, Beck has made it to Carnegie Hall. “This is a good-sounding room,” he deadpanned on Tuesday night, during the second of two performances at the fabled venue. “It sounds pretty good. The Disney-backed streamer has now signed up another big name to its roster – Bill Burr.

Even after hundreds of hours in Starfield, players are still finding seemingly rare POIs like the Autonomous Dogstar Factory. Starfield's potential lies in unique stories in special locations, not generic POIs across the map. The upcoming Shattered Space Dlc raises hopes for more hidden locations and deeper story elements.
After nearly 300 hours in-game, one Starfield player has found a point of interest (Poi) they've never seen before. Starfield's massive scale was something that fans were looking forward to, but also equally nervous about. Many were worried that the scale would make the game feel empty, while others felt as though Bethesda should have focused more on the story and NPCs instead of the clearly flawed open-world itself. There is so much to do that discovering every Poi would be nearly impossible, but the chance of discovering this Poi is even rarer than others.

Breaking Bad is, for many, one of the best television series of all time. It follows high school chemistry teacher turned criminal Walter White and his partner in crime, Jesse Pinkman. After Walter's lung cancer diagnosis, he sets out to produce and distribute methamphetamine to earn enough money for his family's future once he's gone. And while everyone remembers Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul for their talented and award-winning performances in Breaking Bad, some fans might not remember other actors who had smaller roles in the series.
From Danny Trejo to Jessica Jones' star Krysten Ritter, many actors have appeared in Breaking Bad. Some had smaller roles, while others played recurring characters who appeared in a handful of episodes. And in some cases, these actors went on to become bigger stars after their time on Breaking Bad.

ABC’s drama pilot L.A. Law, a revival of the Steven Bochco legal drama, expands its cast with the addition of John Harlan Kim.
He joins original cast members Blair Underwood and Corbin Bernsen, who are reprising their respective roles as Johnathan Rollins and Arnie Becker. He also joins Toks Olagundoye, Hari Nef and Ian Duff, who will play new characters in the revival.
In the pilot, written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and to be directed by Anthony Hemingway, the venerable law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — reinvents itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.

The “LA Law” sequel series pilot at ABC has added John Harlan Kim to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.
The new iteration of the Emmy-winning series features familiar characters working alongside new ones on the most hot button issues of the day.
Kim joins previously announced returning original series cast members Blair Underwood and Corbin Bernsen. Kim will star as Chad Park, an up-and-coming attorney at the firm described as a “shark-in-training” whose ambition sometimes gets ahead of his ethical standards. Nevertheless, he’s a brilliant attorney who takes on his very first murder trial and must devise an inventive legal strategy when his client drops a bombshell in open court.
Kim has most recently been seen in Fox’s hit drama “9-1-1” in the role of Albert Han and on The CW’s “Nancy Drew” as Agent Park. He previously starred in all four seasons of the TNT series “The Librarians.

In the second head-turning Grammy ineligibility decision to be publicized this week, Bo Burnham’s “Inside (The Songs)” has been nixed as a contender in the comedy album category for the 2022 Grammys.
The album will still be put on the preliminary ballot going out to Recording Academy members, but in the category of best compilation soundtrack for visual media instead of comedy album, Billboard reported Thursday. The album is made up of musical material that appeared in Burnham’s hit Netflix special, “Inside.”
Billboard said that Burnham’s record label, Republic, confirmed the news. The Recording Academy does not make the preliminary ballots that go out to voters public, so controversies over classification usually only become widely known if the artist or label opts to go public with dissatisfaction over the genre they end up in.

Happy Friday, dear readers! One of our annual traditions here at Daily Dead is that, once a year, we take a few weeks to celebrate a notable time period in the horror genre. And since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of all the great classics that were released during 1981, we thought it only made sense to pay tribute to the films of that year with our Class of 1981 series.
Starting on Monday, August 16th, we will be kicking off our two-week celebration of the killer horror and memorable sci-fi movies that were released throughout 1981. And if you feel like celebrating right alongside us, I’ve gone ahead and put together this handy list of where you can stream an assortment of ‘81 classics on a variety of platforms (both subscription-based and free).

Tiffany Haddish won Best comedy Album at the Grammys for “Black Mitzvah.” It was her first bidn in the category and her second overall following her Best Spoken Word Album nomination for “The Last Black Unicorn” in 2019. She was the only woman nominated in the comedy race this year, and the Grammys have been shockingly stingy to female comedians, so this win was especially noteworthy. Check out the complete list of Grammy winners here.
In the last 34 years, only one other woman took home Best Comedy Album: Kathy Griffin in 2014 for “Calm Down Gurrl.” Before that only four other women claimed this trophy: Jo Stafford, Elaine May, Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg. This also makes Haddish just the second Black woman to win the award.

There’s a moment in the fourth episode of Showtime’s “The Comedy Store” where Neal Brennan is interviewing Jay Leno about what the former “Tonight Show” host thinks about the current use of podcasts as vehicles for stand-up comedians to both hone their craft and build name recognition. And while Leno’s extended “podcasts are masturbation to stand-up’s carnal knowledge” metaphor is a simultaneous eye-roller/groaner, there’s an energy in this interaction missing from almost every other talking head interview in the series — and that’s likely because it’s the only time director Mike Binder is not conducting the interview.
Binder, whose bonafides include writing and directing “The Upside of Anger” and “Reign Over Me,” got his start at The Comedy Store during its heyday in the 1970s, where he became part of owner Mitzi Shore’s inaugural crop of regulars alongside giants of stand-up Robin Williams,...

There are times I wish my failing memory could serve me better, and here’s one example. I have a vague memory of staying up one night – circa 1980, I guess - to catch Roger Moore on one of those late night talk-shows. I was a huge James Bond fan and, as such, always desperate to mine any news, no matter how trivial, on any upcoming oo7 adventure. This was, of course, in the pre-internet era when insider information was relatively scarce outside of a morsel or two shared in fanzine or with a subscription to Variety.. In any event, don’t recall if Moore shared any information that night on the next scheduled Bond opus For Your Eyes Only (1981). I do clearly recall him discussing Andrew V. Warner Bros.’ “The Little Things,” a crime thriller starring Denzel Washington, has cast actor John Harlan Kim.
John Lee Hancock is writing and directing the film, which also stars Rami Malek and Jared Leto. “The Little Things” follows a burned-out Kern County, Calif. deputy sheriff named Deke (Washington), who teams with Baxter, a crack Lasd detective (Malek), to reel in a wily serial killer. Deke’s nose for the “little things” proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past.

In his new Netflix comedy special Paper Tiger, Bill Burr has one particular segment that I — as an actor, comic, and person with disability — would like to break down in depth. Let’s begin with his actual routine:
This is how screwed up my country is right now. You know Bryan Cranston, right? That dude did a movie. He played a quadriplegic and people gave him shit, being like, "Why is there an able-bodied person playing a quadriplegic?" It’s like, "It’s because it’s called acting, you dumb fuck." See, if he was a quadriplegic ...

No, Bill Burr cannot talk about whether he’ll appear in the “Breaking Bad” movie or in the upcoming season of “Better Call Saul” (“I’m not allowed to comment on any of that s—“), but the “Paper Tiger” comic is happy to talk all things stand-up comedy — and we were happy to indulge him.
Let’s begin at the end: TheWrap asked Burr about his philosophy on closers or the final joke of a comedian’s set. What came out of that question was a pretty interesting revelation about this latest Netflix special.
“I’ve never really thought about it, but I just know a closer when I hear it coming out of my mouth. I’m like, ‘This is something I can close with,'” Burr said. “I’ll be honest with you: I had a different closer for this hour almost right until the night we taped.

The annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase is a great way to support the many local filmmakers who practice their art in our area. Cinema St. Louis, our city’s non-profit cinema-related event planning group, will present The Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase July 8-12. This is the 12th annual presentation, which serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were written, directed, edited, or produced by St. Louis natives or films with strong local ties. The 16 film programs that screen at the Tivoli from July 8-12 serve as the Showcase’s centerpiece. The programs range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmaker. It all ends with a closing-Night Awards Party Thursday July 12th sponsored by Stella Artois from 8 p.m. to midnight at Blueberry Hill‘s Duck Room,...

Since debuting aged 13 with her father, Serge Gainsbourg, on a pop single called 'Lemon Incest', the French-British actress and singer has courted controversy. Last year she starred as a demonic mother in Lars von Trier's controversial film Antichrist. As her third album is released, made with Us songwriter Beck, she talks to Sean O'Hagan about her recent brain surgery and her enduring feelings for her late father
In the summer of 2007, Charlotte Gainsbourg had what seemed like a minor water-skiing accident. Six months later, after attending a gala screening in Venice of Todd Haynes's film, I'm Not There, in which she played one of Bob Dylan's wives, she suffered "a seven day headache". Back home in Paris, she went to the doctor for a check-up and found out that she was lucky to be alive.

Ken Annakin(1914-2009)Ken Annakin directing the beach sequences of The Longest Day.By Lee Pfeiffer
The film world lost another legend this week with the passing of director/writer Ken Annakin, who died at age 94. For those of us at Cinema Retro, the loss is personal. In addition to directing some of our favorite films, Ken was an avid supporter of the magazine. The seemingly indestructible British filmmaker led a full and active life and was engaged in trying to get new projects off the ground until he fell ill in February.
Annakin began his career as a director in 1946 and found his talents to be constantly in demand. His career took off a decade later when he was hired by Walt Disney to direct The Story of Robin Hood in 1952. He quickly became one of Disney's favorite and most dependable directors. Annakin would do numerous other films for Disney,...
