It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. It’s tough to compete with the likes of the Shaw Brothers and the drunken master known as Jackie Chan. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States decades ago, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen. Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo,...

As you've likely heard by now, O.J. Simpson has passed away at the age of 76.
One of the most famous -- and infamous -- Americans of the modern era, Simpson was known for many things:
He was, of course, a world-class athlete, a standout at running back for the NFL's Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers.
Later in life, he would become the center of the most high-profile murder trial of the 20th century,
And though he beat the charges under dubious circumstances, the lingering suspicion that Simpson murdered his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, would make him a pariah in the upper-crust social circles that had served as his comfortable domain for so many years.
But before O.J. ever earned a dime from professional football -- before he was arrested for murder and before he served nine years in prison on unrelated robbery and...

Sanya Malhotra Was Rejected From Did’s Audition By Dance Deewane 3 Judge Dharmesh Yelande(Photo Credit –Instagram)
They say Bollywood is a ‘fateful’ industry. Luck By Chance, as Zoya Akhtar aptly called it. You might reach the top despite being a mediocre talent, and you might never make it despite hustling and struggling and having a lot of potentials. Many times, actors and artists arrive much late, and two such artists were Sanya Malhotra and Dharmesh Yelande. But the interesting part is that both of them are getting their due.
What if we tell you that Sanya was once rejected as a talent by Dharmesh himself? The actress once revealed how she auditioned for Dance India Dance but was rejected in the initial rounds since she did not have a sob story. However, she even confessed that choreographer Dharmesh Yelande was a part of the crew when she got rejected.

The Russell brothers had barely finished the signature routine of the act — a bit involving the boys dressed as immigrant servant girls that had traditionally left audiences in hysterics — before a soundtrack of boos filled the theater. They had crossed a line with their material, and now they were going to pay the price. The duo would essentially be banned from performing anywhere. They received death threats. Offers for gigs around the country were rescinded. Anti-defamation groups began organizing protests and threatening not just the Russells, but anyone who considered booking the brothers at all.

Exclusive: Writer-director John Ridley has been writing and directing film and TV projects about racial conflict his whole career. And despite winning the Oscar for scripting 12 Years a Slave, he has always found it a tough sell, the idea of forcing people to confront their own feelings about race and prejudice. He is in an unusual place in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder that prompted protests in major cities across the country. Right after writing a brief op-ed in the Los Angeles Times suggesting it wasn’t Ok for HBO Max to continue airing the cinematic classic Gone With The Wind without a qualifier that it wrongly celebrates the South and diminishes the horrors of slavery, WarnerMedia announced it would pull the film until it can provide some historical context for viewers. And Warner Bros just scrapped a Grand Rex theater showing in Paris to commemorate the...

From getting to watch “Broad City” in class, to examining the same first episode of “The Prisoner” over and over again, studying TV as part of a college curriculum is a mixture of bizarre and relatively run-of-the-mill. To learn more about it for this episode of “Very Good TV,” TV editor Liz Shannon Miller and TV Critic Ben Travers spoke with IndieWire interns Maya, Michael, and Juan about studying TV and how much things have changed since Ben and Liz were at school.
In a climate where TV is more valued than ever before, academia has started to catch up — but dated philosophies on where TV fits into a film studies curriculum have managed to survive. With limited class options and the continued view that TV is just an extension of film (and doesn’t exist on its own), do TV studies lag behind?

Revenge is the thematic tissue that connects Dead Man Down, the English-language debut of director Niels Arden Oplev (opening this week), and The Klansman, Terence Young's disastrously bad picture that escaped into the world in late 1974. As a young man growing up in Los Angeles, I remember that rumors about the off-screen, wild behavior of stars Lee Marvin and Richard Burton were rampant in the media. Those reports have some factual basis; Burton was hospitalized for more than a month after production concluded so he could "dry out," according to The Richard Burton Diaries, published in 2012. In any event, the evidence on screen reveals a very muted performance by Marvin and a very sad one by Burton, who appears to be barely capable...

Attention all you Jive-ass Cornpone Peckerwoods!….Blood Kwanzaa is this Friday night!
Gabriel “Skuzzy” Zolman is a St. Louis promoter, DJ, writer, performance artist, and movie nut who produces and hosts a monthly show at the downtown nightclub The Crack Fox. He calls his show Subversion and describes it as a “post-industrial variety show”. Subversion features music, magic, comedy, burlesque dancers, and more and every month he has a different theme. One month the theme was Ed Wood and he recreated, on stage, some dance numbers from Orgy Of The Dead. He once dove into a box of hypodermic needles to recreate a scene from Saw 2. Needless to say, Mr. Zolman is devoted to his art (or just nuts)!

We’re celebrating one of Hollywood’s great tough guys and one of our favorite actors September 6th at The Way Out Club in St. Louis with Super-8 Lee Marvin Movie Madness.
Lee Marvin rose through the ranks of movie stardom as a character actor, delivering mostly villainous supporting turns in many films before finally graduating to leading roles. Regardless of which side of the law he was on however, he projected a tough-as-nails intensity and a two-fisted integrity which elevated even the slightest material. Born February 19, 1924, in New York City, Marvin quit high school to enter the Marine Corps and while serving in the South Pacific was badly wounded in battle when a machine gun nest shot off part of his buttocks and severed his sciatic nerve. On the surface the 1974 film is a serious depiction of the bigotry and the racial confrontations that tear apart an Alabama town in the 1960.s, but watching it today The Klansman comes off at times serious, laughable, meanspirited, sleazy, and racist. I.m sure the movie wasn’t meant to be racist, but it is filled with characters mouthing so many racist beliefs and committing so many racist crimes that the movie seems to gloat gleefully in its outrageous depiction of bigotry and delivers one ham-fisted,...

Incarcerated sports star-turned-actor O.J. Simpson is to wed behind bars, according to a new U.S. report. The "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" star is ready to marry a pen pal he has never met, reports the Globe.
Simpson, who is serving time in Nevada for armed robbery, has allegedly proposed to "a young blonde" called Anna, and she is set to become his third wife. An insider tells the publication, "They've been writing to each other for a while now. She sent him her photo, and he just flipped for her."
The source claims Simpson's latest love is a spitting image for his late wife Nicole. The former football star was acquitted of her murder in 1995.
Professionally, O.J. Simpson rose to fame in his acting career with parts in films such as the television mini-series "Roots" and movies "The Cassandra Crossing", "Capricorn One", "The Klansman" and "The Naked Gun" trilogy.

The Klansman really has to be seen to be believed but you can’t, because it’s Not available on DVD!

Next Tuesday, October 6th is Super-8 Movie Madness Night at The Way Out Club in St. Louis! Younger movie geeks might not be familiar with Super-8 movie madness, so a brief history of the malady is in order. Besides waiting for a favorite film to pop up on TV, what did movie buffs do before home video? That’s not a rhetorical question because I have the answer: Super-8 millimeter Films! I’m not talking about the kind our dads made of us on vacation in the 60’s and 70’s but the kind that were sold at stores and through mail-order that were condensed versions of popular feature films. Ken Films, Castle Films, and Blackhawk were just some of the distributors of these digest versions of famous movies. I remember the ads that ran in the back of “Famous Monsters of Filmland” magazine advertising mini horror films and I collected them as a kid.
