The Movie That Introduced the World to Fast Zombies Before 28 Days Later
Image
When 28 Days Later hit theaters in 2002, it instantly became a favorite among horror fans, who were enthralled with the film's fast-paced action and zombies that attacked with break-neck speed. With its themes of infection and subversive political commentary, 28 Days Later has received praise from critics and fans alike as a film that shifted the paradigm and brought the zombie film back to life. However, long before 28 Days Later, Nightmare City, released in 1980 and directed by Umberto Lenzi, amped up the speed and savagery of the zombie film while also establishing a commentary on the escalation of the nuclear arms race.

The films of Umberto Lenzi exist in multiple subgenres. In Cannibal Ferox and Eaten Alive!, Lenzi took the savagery and brutality of the Amazon cannibal film to new heights, a subgenre he had helped start with Man from Deep River in 1972. His giallo films, Seven Bloodstained Orchids,...

Michael Rosenbaum Might Be the Best Lex Luthor, but Hes Done So Much More
Image
Quick Links Michael Rosenbaum Starred in a 1990s Romantic Drama With Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron Michael Rosenbaum Left The CWs Smallville After Seven Seasons Michael Rosenbaums Lex Luthor Was the Best Part of Smallville

Smallville's Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum, became widely known for his iconic role on the CW Network's (formerly The WB Network) early 2000s Superman prequel series. Some would argue that his performance as the DC Comics villain has yet to be topped. Show creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were the first to give a substantial on-screen backstory to the character. Gough and Millar also created a new nemesis in Lionel Luthor -- Lex's cold and unflinching father, played by veteran actor John Glover. For a number of reasons, Rosenbaum left the successful show after Season 7, but his talent isn't restricted to his time portraying Superman's greatest foe.

Before his work in Smallville, Rosenbaum had...

Alex Trebek at an event for The 32nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (2005)
7 Memorable Moments From Alex Trebek’s Final ‘Jeopardy!’ Episode
Alex Trebek at an event for The 32nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (2005)
Alex Trebek’s final “Jeopardy!” episode, originally intended for Christmas Day 2020, aired on Friday, Jan.8, 2021. It was a pretty typical episode, though limited commercials allowed for a touching montage at the end.

Like every episode of the classic Sony TV quiz show, Trebek’s final turn had some standout moments. Below are seven of the ones we found most memorable.

Trebek died in November following a very public battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 80.

The contestants

Yoshie Hill, an executive assistant from California, Cliff Chang, a software engineering manager from Illinois, and Jim Gilligan, an assistant professor of English education from New York.

A nod to the holidays

Since this was supposed to air on Christmas Day, there was a special category about Christmas movies. Answers included “Elf,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “A Christmas Story” and others.

Double Jeopardy!

Here’s the clue: “This 1969 song that mentions “Joo Joo Eyeball...

Exclusive: Actor John Richardson: A Personal Tribute By Mark Mawston
Image
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

By Mark Mawston

We regret to report that actor John Richardson has passed away this week, just two weeks before what would have been his 87th birthday.

John found fame in the 1960s via films such as Mario Bava's Black Sunday and Hammer Film's remakes of She and One Million Years B.C., wherein he co-starred alongside many of the most beautiful actresses of the era, such as Ursula Andress, Barbara Steele and Raquel Welch who famously bemoaned, on first being introduced to John, that her new leading man was more beautiful than she was!

John's role in One Million Years B.C. (1966), Ray Harryhausen's prehistoric animated cult classic, led to a long relationship with his co-star Martine Beswick and a move to Hollywood, where he landed roles in big budget Hollywood productions such as Vincente Minnelli's On A Clear Day You...

Steven Universe Future Episodes 5 Review

Before I begin, we should all take a moment of silence for Greg’s hair.

…

I audibly gasped when he cut it off. That hair was always there! A true secondary character in this show! People talk a lot about how Steven Universe has built up its world, Gem culture, and its storylines but this singular moment displays just how much even the smallest aspects of the show have made an impact. A guy cutting his hair off can serve as trigger to the emotional climax of an episode. Brilliant.

The real meat of the episode focused on the new fusion of Bluebird that finally addressed something of a complaint many had towards the series. As much as Steven...

October 1st Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Anna And The Apocalypse, The House Of Hitchcock Collection, Itsy Bitsy, The Prey
It is a glorious week to be a horror fan, because we have a ton of amazing Blu-rays and DVDs heading home on Tuesday. And while there’s a lot to be excited about, on a personal note, I’m beyond thrilled that Anna and the Apocalypse is finally getting a tangible home media release, because I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to add a copy of John McPhail’s delightful musical to my own collection of movies.

Beyond that, the amazing-looking House of Hitchcock Collection arrives this Tuesday, and looks to be a must-own set for any Alfred Hitchcock fans out there. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Nightmare Beach this week with their special edition release, and Arrow Video has put together a much-deserved limited edition set for The Prey as well. We also have a few genre favorites making their 4K Ultra HD debut this week: The Shining,...

Class of 1987: The Eyes Have It – Opera, Dario Argento’s Last Masterpiece
1987 may be the year of the last great Argento movie.

The horror genre has known few voices greater or more influential than Dario Argento, a master craftsman and revolutionary stylist who, from his debut feature The Bird With the Crystal Plumage in 1970 through the late 1980s, is responsible for some of the best horror movies ever made: Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebrae, Phenomena. In 1987, he wrote and directed what might be his final masterpiece, the giallo-tinged slasher Opera, arguably his most technically accomplished—and bloodiest—film. While more of a standard whodunit than his abstract supernatural efforts, there is such precision to the photography, such expertly staged choreography both in front of and behind the camera, that the movie deserves to be named among his greatest works if only for the dazzling purity of the filmmaking on display.

Opera was my first exposure to Dario Argento, but it wasn't the full...
