President Donald Trump has called for PBS and NPR to be “defunded” immediately, referring to the publicly-funded networks as “a giant scam” and “arms of the radical left Democratic party.” “NPR and PBS, two horrible and completely biased platforms (Networks!), should be Defunded by Congress, Immediately,” Trump wrote in a late-night Truth Social rant. He continued, “Republicans, don’t miss this opportunity to rid our Country of this giant Scam, both being arms of the Radical Left Democrat Party. Just Say No And, Make America Great Again!!!” The President’s comments came amid a special congressional hearing on Wednesday (March 26), held by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-ga)’s Doge Subcommittee to interrogate PBS and NPR executives over claims of bias against the Republican party. PBS, which airs much-loved shows including All Creatures Great and Small, Call the Midwife, Finding Your Roots, Grantchester, and more, has long faced criticism from Trump,...

When Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light premiered in the U.K. last year, it enjoyed a rapturous reception, with critics lauding it as “so beautifully made it’s breathtaking” and “a complete triumph.” But to hear director Peter Kosminsky tell it, the sequel to 2015’s Wolf Hall nearly didn’t get made at all.
“Six weeks from production, we were shutting down. There was no way around,” remembers Kosminsky of the second season, which adapts the final novel in Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Henry VIII advisor and fixer Thomas Cromwell. “We were so far adrift on the money and we had cut and cut and cut.” At a late-night production meeting, the director and an executive producer made a dramatic pact: To save the project, they would give up major parts of their fees. Writer Peter Straughan (who recently won an Oscar for Conclave) and star Mark Rylance (Dunkirk) later joined in,...

Ahead of her Doctor Who return, Millie Gibson's upcoming PBS drama The Forsytes has been renewed for a second season before the first season has had its release date confirmed. Adapting the novel series penned by John Galsworthy, which explores the lives of an upper-middle-class English family across several generations, The Forsytes is the third major television adaptation of the source material.
While PBS Masterpiece has yet to issue a release date for The Forsytes, Deadlinereports that the series has already received a season 2 renewal. But in the final episode of All Creatures Great and Small’s fifth season on PBS, Anna Madeley’s Audrey Hall was close to coming apart. Two weeks before Christmas 1941, with World War II raging in Europe and the Pacific, she learned that the British Royal Navy ship her son was serving on, the Hms Repulse, had been sunk by Japan. News reports said that about half the crew had perished, but it took an agonizing two weeks for Audrey to get word that Edward (Conor Deane) had survived. From the time the Yorkshire housekeeper learned of the disaster until she received that joyous phone call from her son on Christmas morning, Madeley’s marvelously moving performance was the highlight of a holiday episode that wasn’t like any of the ...

Netflix is great. We know this. We subscribe to it even though maybe we complain about the price. We get our money's worth.
But let's be real, the streamer is not the only service we pay money to see. Maybe we have a separate (secret) account for Hulu. We don't tell our friends this, of course. We do not want to cheat on Netflix.
But there are other non-Netflix series to watch of value. The good thing is that our favorite streaming service will likely rule the world one day and all shows ever will be available to us there. We cannot wait until these five are.
Five great shows we wish were streaming on Netflix right nowWhite Lotus
Entering its third season on (shhh...) Max, White Lotus is a ridiculously consistently great show. Mike White created the series and it might have become far more beloved than anyone expected.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for All Creatures Great and Small Season 5 Episode 3, “Homecoming.”] The boy is back in town. Callum Woodhouse‘s Tristan Farnon returned home from war in one piece in All Creatures Great and Small on Sunday, January 26 on PBS. And it didn’t take long for him and big brother Siegfried (Samuel West) to get back into the swing of their signature squabbling, even if Siegfried did swear he would never utter a cross word to his baby brother again if he came home without a scratch. It also didn’t take long for the brothers to band together to give a ornery client a taste of his own medicine. The charming family reunion was also highlighted by baby Jimmy’s christening and a poignant private moment between Siegfried and Tristan at the episode’s end. “Homecoming” began with James’ (Nicholas Ralph) parents arriving to Darrowby for the christening, and his mother...

Callum Woodhouse returns as Tristan in this week’s episode of All Creatures Great and Small Season 5. The season’s third episode, fittingly titled “Homecoming,” will see Tristan return from his station in the war to reunite with brother Siegfried (Samuel West), who spent Episode 2 squabbling with Mr. Bosworth (Ted Lasso‘s Jeremy Swift) over his methods of managing the town blackout drills as a warden. Housekeeper Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) works with Mr. Bosworth in these efforts, and his uptight personality ruffles some feathers along the way. But a veterinary emergency led to Siegfried and Bosworth having a moment of connection. Woodhouse will be a welcome sight when he comes back after a whole season away. The actor’s sabbatical was made possible by having Tristan join the war effort as Royal Army Veterinary Corps. He’s been stationed in Cairo, but now he’s coming back to Darrowby...

It’s not just the animals that take center stage on PBS’s All Creatures Great and Small. In the fifth season of Masterpiece’s positively poignant British dramedy, based on veterinarian James Herriot’s beloved books, the humans are stepping outside their usual roles as World War II continues to impact the pastoral Yorkshire community of Darrowby in 1941. For executive producer Debbie O’Malley, who wrote two of the season’s seven episodes, that presented a challenge. “The things people love about the show are the warmth and the humor and the sense of community,” she says. “We wanted to preserve all of that but also not do a disservice to the very real hardships and sacrifices that people made.” Two of Skeldale House’s animal docs already have left to serve their country: Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and James (Nicholas Ralph) as the pilot...

If there’s a show you’ve been waiting years to return, chances are it’s coming back in 2025. From “Stranger Things” Season 5, which is expected to premiere later this year, to “Severance” Season 2, some of the biggest and buzziest shows on television are expected to make their returns in this new year.
Part of the reason for this big return has to do with the residual effects of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Those historic Hollywood effects delayed production across the board. While broadcast series were largely able to air new episodes in 2024, prestige streaming and cable shows — which typically take a bit longer to produce on average — needed a bit more time to bounce back.
But bounce back they did. And it’s not just the “White Loti” and “Andors” of the world fans have to look forward to. Do you love procedural classics? New episodes of...

Few titles have reached the popularity of Harry Potter. Most of the child actors were unknown when the first film premiered but everyone knew their names by the time the franchise ended in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
While attending the Rhode Island Comic Con on Nov. 3, Harry Potter star Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom in all eight films, discussed his character but also how he handled his fame after the film series ended (via The Mirror). The film series adapted J.K. Rowling's seven novels into two films, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in the leading roles, alongside a series of British A-listers. Since then, most of the child actors have tried to make their mark outside their Harry Potter characters, and Lewis discussed how excited he was to do something new, and how they avoided "the pitfalls of being a child actor.

The modern remake of All Creatures Great and Small has become a TV institution all its own across five seasons thus far, and it is set to return for season 6 soon. Based on the autobiographical books by James Herriot (the pen name of Alf Wight), All Creatures Great and Small concerns a trio of veterinarians who tend to the needs of animals and their humans alike in the Yorkshire Dales in the '30s and '40s. Capturing the cozy nature of the books, the series is equal parts heartwarming and fascinating as the world of rural veterinary medicine is explored.
Naturally, the strongest aspect of All Creatures Great and Small is its characters, and viewers have watched James' family grow throughout the years. Despite its generally low-stakes tone, All Creatures Great and Small has moved into the World War II era, and the fog of war has even crept...
