Director Marco Bellocchio replaced Sergio Donati, who had written the story and was to direct, but was forced to drop out due to clashes with actor Gian Maria Volontè.

Alternate versions
The UK release was cut, this film required a compulsory cut to a potentially indecent image of a child, in order to obtain a 15 classification. Cuts were made in accordance with BBFC Guidelines, policy, and the Protection of Children Act 1978. An uncut classification was not available.

The film's main lesson is its realism, miles away from Hollywood's view of newspaper and newsmakers, even when it tries to be critical. The cynical newspaper editor's character (played by Volontè) is a brilliant and accurate portrait of the worst manipulative journalism.
