Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, aka Pigs x7, have released the new single “Detroit,” the first new music from the UK band since their 2023 full-length Land of Sleeper.
The track is a five-plus-minute crusher that’s on the darker side for Pigs x7, slotting somewhere between the noise rock of The Jesus Lizard and sludge doom of the Melvins. A bludgeoning riff pounds away in repetition, setting up ominous bellowed vocals and a breakdown that slows things to a trudging pace. The payoff comes as the band gradually build the tempo back up in the second half of the track.
“’Detroit’ reflects on the worst manifestations of male jealousy and resentment,” stated singer Matt Baty, “and the ways in which a lack of accountability can lead to deflecting responsibility in exchange for blaming external forces like fate or God for perceived injustice.”

As has been the case in previous years, once again the short films of the London Film Festival continue to demonstrate the eclecticism of the festival programmers’ tastes. Despite being the UK’s largest film festival, the team behind this 68th edition of Lff aren’t afraid to have shorts from filmmakers of various backgrounds sitting next to each other. Watching through the programmes on offer, you’ll see student filmmakers next to established directors, horror shorts sitting alongside intimate documentaries, high budgets next to low budgets. It’s just a wonderful mix of films that are clearly put together without any sort of prejudice or preconceived assumptions. Below you’ll find a list of ten short films from the festival this year that we deemed recommendation-worthy but bear in mind the programme is very much worth your time across the board. So, once you’ve finished with this list,...

New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of October 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a Frankenstein anime adaptation, a K-Pop ghost story, and a pioneer of screenlife horror.
Pigs (1973)

Directed by Marc Lawrence.
It would be wrong to say Pigs‘ complicated release history is more interesting than the movie itself. Just don’t go into the movie expecting a simple story of sinister swine getting their fill of human flesh. Adjust your expectations as you watch Pigs for Hog Out Month.
Instead of pure hog horror, Pigs is far more concerned with the troubled interiority of its protagonist Lynn (Toni Lawrence). Something from her haunted past is making her uneasy. And the longer she...

Elisabeth Moss has never won an individual Screen Actors Guild Award. A 15-time nominee, she has won twice as part of the “Mad Men” ensemble but lost all six of her solo nominations, of which she earned two for “Mad Men” and and three for Hulu’s ”The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018-20) for TV drama actress, and one for “Top of the Lake” (2014) for limited Series/TV movie actress. It’s why I now ask of you, dear SAG Awards voters, to consider finally rewarding Moss individually for her career-defining work in “Handmaid’s'” Season 4.
The fourth installment picks up with Moss’ June Osborne on the run, and the actor juggles four discernible but inextricably intertwined sides of her character: a traumatized handmaid, a solicitous mother and wife, a vengeful, rage-driven rebel, and a guilt-ridden survivor. Take, for instance, the scene from the Season 4 opener, “Pigs,” in which June directs child...

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will hand out Emmys in 37 categories tonight, with this year’s second and third ceremonies set for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday. Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian come into the Emmys with a leading 24 noms apiece. Among platforms, as usual the fight is between HBO and Netflix, with the combined HBO and HBO edging the streaming giant in total noms 130-129. Gold Derby’s Experts from major media outlets think someone from “The Handmaid’s Tale” is going to win the Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actress. But who? Five give the edge to Alexis Bledel, who won this category in 2017. But four instead think Mckenna Grace will prevail on her first career nomination. The last two forecast Claire Foy (“The Crown”) will win after previously proving victorious in the lead category. Sophie Okonedo (“Ratched”) and Phylicia Rashad (“This Is Us”) round out the category. Hurry and make your Emmy predictions before the Creative Arts ceremonies take place Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” had long been predicted to win another Emmy in Best Drama Guest Actress — it just might not go to the person everyone was initially expecting. Alexis Bledel led the odds during the nominations phase and in early winner odds, but the 2017 champ has now been knocked out from the top spot by her co-star Mckenna Grace.
Grace currently holds a narrow edge over Bledel at 71/20 to 18/5. Claire Foy (“The Crown”) is further back in third, followed by Sophie Okenedo (“Ratched”) and Phylicia Rashad (“This Is Us”). Grace was predicted to get a bid — she was in fourth place — so her nomination wasn’t a complete shocker, but what’s changed is the circumstances around her show itself.
Off a resurgent fourth season, “Handmaid’s” surprised with 21 nominations, including 10 for acting. Last year, it got 10 nominations total. While Grace was in the top five in the odds, she could’ve also easily missed,...

Warning: the Handmaid’s tale season 4 episode synopses below contain plot spoilers
The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t the kind of TV show that suits a binge-watch. Its heart-heavy dystopian story about a brutal theocracy that enslaves and rapes fertile women benefits from a little fresh air between episodes. On-screen torture and suffering are best delivered in small doses.
It’s good news then, that after its first three episodes are released on Hulu in one batch on Wednesday April 28th, the remaining seven episodes of season four will be released weekly each Wednesday until June 16th, giving US viewers all time to digest.
For UK viewers, season four is confirmed to be airing on Channel 4 as usual, but the broadcaster has yet to confirm a start date. As soon as one is announced, we’ll pass it on. The imported show traditionally airs weekly on the terrestrial channel. Seasons...

Cathy Yan's Dead Pigs is exclusively showing on Mubi starting February 12, 2021 in the Debuts series. This is a deeply personal story years in the making.Dead Pigs is a reunion of sorts—a way for me to better understand my birth country, a place that has enthralled and confounded me ever since I left it in 1990 at the age of four. In my lifetime, China has undergone such immense change, lifting close to a billion people out of poverty amidst the fastest urbanization in world history. But there is another side to this massive transition. Deng Xiaoping’s famous words—“To get rich is glorious!”—have compromised everything from food safety to the environment to the souls of its citizens. All this made contemporary China a fascinating, exaggerated, complicated, ridiculous and wonderful setting for my first film. I made Dead Pigs in 2017 and it premiered at Sundance in 2018. To my surprise and glee,...

Considering Dead Pigs was Cathy Yan’s calling card to enter the Hollywood shuffle with Birds of Prey, it’s surprising it’s taken this long for it to finally receive a U.S. release. Three years after its Sundance Film Festival premiere, Yan’s directorial debut will now be getting a debut on Mubi this week. A dark comedy exploring modern China through the lens of a handful of characters, we’ve been waiting to see this for some time and glad it’ll be getting such a wide U.S. debut. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has arrived.
“I think when it was first at Sundance [in 2018], it was a slightly different set of circumstances,” Yan tells The Playlist about the delayed release. There weren’t that many distributors that want to take that kind of risk or know what to do with this film because it...

In the long-running subgenre of horror films known as creature features, animals have been used to terrify audiences for decades. Of course, the most obvious is Steven Spielberg's Jaws, in which a 30-foot Great White Shark mortified viewers from ever going back into the water. But sharks aren't the only animal to be the subject of terror in horror films.

Book Review: ‘House of Psychotic Women’ a compelling dive into the personal appeal of extreme cinema
Back in November of 2011, Sound on Sight contributors were invited to write about their “gateway” films – the movies that first lit them up to the power and magic of cinema. What became apparent to me over the course of that series of posts was how much our respective choices were shaped by who each of us is. It was never as simple as, “Well, then I took Film Appreciation 101 and saw Citizen Kane for the first time…” Nothing’s that simple. Where we were from, how we were raised, the lives we led…all of that and more in some way influenced the choices each of us made. No surprise, that: we view everything – sex, politics, the way the world works – through the prism of our own experience. Why not movies?
But I’ve never seen the dynamic so clearly at work – or demonstrated so emphatically – as it is in...

I first met Kier-La in 2009 when she generously agreed to contribute to my Bloody Breasts documentary webseries by letting me interview her amid the craziness that is the Fantasia Film Festival – she...

Troma sounds a lot like trauma and without knowing how they came up with the name I can't but help think it's on purpose. After all they've spent more than thirty years making sure there was something to offend somebody in virtually every movie they've made. Maybe that's why Troma is still around thirty years later. There is a dark cloud looming over this weekend, and it's called The Swine Flu! Vice President Biden caused quite a panic yesterday when he told the nation he was keeping his family and friends away from enclosed spaces such as subways, airplanes, buses, malls, and the local Wal*Mart. If you don't want to catch this dreaded pig virus, you must wash your hands while counting from A to Z. You must stay away from strangers. And you must avoid the local Cineplex at all costs (because that is the number one breeding ground for icky porcine germs).
This means a lot of you would-be ticket buyers are going to be stuck at home, guzzling antibiotics and trying to duct tape your windows shut this weekend. When the dust has settled, and you finally have the living room walled off in bubble wrap, that most dread villian is bound to strike.
