Which Silsila Role Was Initially Offered To Parveen Babi? (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Directed by Yash Chopra, Silsila starred Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Jaya Bachchan in the lead roles. It is one of the most iconic movies of Hindi cinema. However, did you know that Parveen Babi was originally the first choice to play Jaya Bachchan’s role in the film?

In an interview with Ani, veteran actor Ranjeet disclosed that Parveen Babi was very upset after being replaced by Jaya Bachchan. The actor shared, “She (Parveen) was my dear friend… She was all alone. She was a beautiful lady. Always smiling and we used to call her ‘Fawada’ because of her teeth. Once she was very upset and she was crying. I asked her, ‘Kya hua Parveen?’”

“We were in Kashmir. I don’t mind quoting it because it’s a fact. A film was made, Silsila, and Parveen Babi was the original heroine,...

Image
Maidaan Vs Bade Miyan Chote Miyan On Eid Will Be 9th Ajay Devgn Vs Akshay Kumar Clash ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, which has been awaiting a release date for a long has finally locked its release date, and surprisingly, it is a major decision to lock horns with Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan on Eid! Helmed by Amit Sharma, the biographical sports drama will be released on Eid 2024.

Interestingly, this will be Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff’s second Eid clash after they locked horns with Runway and Heropanti 2 on Eid 2022. Both films tanked disastrously at the box office.

Apart from Tiger Shroff, this will be Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar’s 9th major clash at the box office in their entire careers. While they have shared the screen together multiple times, starting with the blockbuster Suhaag in 1994, they have locked horns multiple times as well.

Image
Mumbai, June 5 (Ians) Veteran actor and film-maker Sarabjeet Singh alias ‘Gufi’ Paintal – the elder brother of the noted comedian Kanwarjit Singh Paintal – passed away due to old-age related problems here on Monday, Bollywood sources said.

Gufi was 78 and is best remembered for his role as the cunning ‘Shakuni Mama’ in the mega-teleserial by the late B. R. Chopra, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988-1990) which was a rage on Doordarshan.

Born on October 4, 1944 in the pilgrim town of Tarn Taran in Punjab, he also worked in films like ‘Rafoo Chakkar’, ‘Dillagi’, ‘Des Pardes’, ‘Suhaag’, and more, besides nearly 18 teleserials in various genres and roles.

Last week, his nephew and actor Hiten Paintal had told mediapersons that his uncle Gufi was serious and had been rushed to a private hospital in Andheri for heart and kidney related problems.

After an unsuccessful battle for life, Gufi breathed his last this morning, a second major Bollywood tragedy...

Big B's five decade in B-Town
Amitabh Bachchan's journey of five decades to become the Bollywood "Shahenshah" was not always a smooth ride. Indeed, his life is nothing short of brilliant biopic material. Early rejections were followed by a phase when he made his mark as a promising actor, which was soon overshadowed by the kind of superstardom Bollywood never saw before or after. When the superstar tried his hand at film entrepreneurship, he went bankrupt, only to bounce back and claim supremacy as a super brand and respectability as an icon.

The first reaction of the industry all those years ago, however, was far from welcoming. His tall and lanky frame, and the baritone of his voice, were deemed unsuitable for Bollywood's image of a perfect hero back then. These factors were pointed out as flaws, and reasons why he wouldn't be able to make it big in the industry.

Framing Movies Take Twenty-Three: Amar, Akbar, Anthony (1977)
Masala brilliance thy name is personified by Manmohan Desai. Masala filmmaking is that secret ingredient to nearly every film in this wide and bountiful Hindi film industry. Of course, filmmakers disguise these elements in the social message films, the love stories, the thrillers, and countless other genre-pictures. If we want something to break up the tension of love scene, add some dishoom-dishoom, or if you want to cool that down, throw in some smart comedy. The ability to freely mix genres and tropes was expertly done in the juggernaut Amar, Akbar, Anthony (Aaa). The late 70s were the beginnings of the Amitabh Bachchan industry and Amar Akbar Anthony marked the partnership between Bachchan and Desai.

Aaa features a 25-minute prologue that stuffs in the three brothers and their parents Kishanlal and Bharati (Pran and Nirupa Roy) as they get torn apart by circumstances. Kishanlal is fresh out of jail for...

The songs our parents gave us
The music we grow up with shapes our tastes in later life, according to a study by Cornell University. We asked Guardian writers to tell us about the songs that take them back to their childhood homes

'My mother would listen to the Carpenters while ironing'

Of the handful of albums my parents owned, it was The Carpenters' Singles 1969-1973 that struck me the most. I remember being particularly fascinated by Rainy Days and Mondays. With the benefit of hindsight, I suspect it was because it was the first piece of music I had ever heard that appeared to perfectly suit the circumstances in which I heard it. My mother would listen to the Carpenters in the afternoon, while doing the ironing in the front room, and I remember thinking that was what the woman in the song was probably doing too. In my head she was singing it...

How Amitabh Bachchan united generations of British Asians
The Bollywood actor's early films are fondly remembered because, in their day, they offered a triumphant alternative version of what it meant to be Asian

I was probably 12 years old the first time I saw an Amitabh Bachchan film. It was the early 80s and video players were relatively rare. My family did not own one so my father would, like many Asians at the time, hire a machine, which he would pick up on a Friday evening and return on Sunday. The cost of the video hire was, I recall, £5, and my dad and I would also select three or four films to watch on the Friday and Saturday evening. Invariably, these films would star Amitabh Bachchan.

Bollywood movies – especially those released in the 70s and 80s – are today often viewed as gaudy kitsch, but the pleasure I derived from titles such as Coolie, Naseeb and Sholay was entirely unironic.
