Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Glasgow audiences were treated to a séance gone horribly wrong this weekend as Scared to Death made its International Premiere on Saturday 8th March. Produced by Eric Barrett and directed by Paul Boyd, this comedy-horror hybrid blends Hollywood satire, supernatural terror, and pitch-black humour, all wrapped up in a delightfully sinister premise.
Starring Lin Shaye, Bill Moseley, and Rae Dawn Chong, Scared to Death follows an ambitious young filmmaker who convinces his cast and crew to attend a real séance in the abandoned children’s shelter where they’re shooting their latest horror film. But what begins as a quirky publicity stunt soon descends into a nightmare, as the ghosts of long-dead orphans – and something far worse – come out to play.
Prior to its sensational screening, we sat down with experienced producer Eric Barrett to talk career pivots, the challenge of balancing horror and comedy, and why...

Last year, Australian filmmaker Peter Weir was given an honorary Oscar for having “illuminated the human experience with his unique and expansive body of work.” Sadly, it’s now official that his filmography is complete, as Weir confirmed during an appearance at the Festival de la Cinémathèque in Paris that he has retired from directing.
Télérama reported (and IndieWire was kind enough to translate their report) that Weir was asked why 14 years have gone by since his last movie. Weir replied, “I am retired. Why did I stop cinema? Because, quite simply, I have no more energy.“
Born in 1944, Weir got his career started in television back in the 1960s, working on the TV projects The Life and Times of the Reverend Buck Shotte and Man on a Green Bike. After contributing a segment to the anthology film Three to Go, he made the 50 minute movie Homesdale and the documentary Whatever Happened to Green Valley?...

The ensemble cast of Nickelodeon's Salute Your Shorts has taken a variety of different career paths since the show ended. Debuting in 1991, the teen sitcom followed a group of campers at Camp Anawanna and the different adventures they get up to and the relationships they have over the course of a summer. The main star of the series changed over the course of its two seasons, but for the most part, the characters stayed the same. Bullies, preppies, and every other '90s stereotype came together to prank, fight, make friends, and be kids in a way that wasn't always depicted on television.
While the show only ran for two seasons, it gained a cult following and has a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Salute Your Shorts was part of a gambit by Nickelodeon to inch into the original programming space that The Disney Afternoon had taken when it...

Anni Browning accepts the 2017 Spa Award to Film Finances for Best Service and Facilities.
In 22 years with Film Finances Australasia, Anni Browning experienced numerous highs and faced a few challenges as the cinema industry ebbed and flowed.
Browning, who has stepped down as MD of the completion bond company but is still a consultant, supported Rachel Perkins’ debut feature Radiance.
She took one of her biggest risks on a Rolf de Heer movie, which she counts as one of her proudest achievements.
The biggest trend during her time has been the proliferation of low budget films, despite the need to pay crews and allocate reasonable money for post- production. Film Finances bonded a lot of films budgeted at $1 million- $1.5 million and one-off feature docs costing as little as $100,000- $200,000.
One thing which has not remained constant is the insurance bond premium. When she started it was as high as 6 per cent of the budget.

I had no idea what to expect when I placed the DVD for “Scobie Malone” in my player. Scobie, played by Jack Thompson, makes his way through traffic on a sunny day in Sydney Australia as the movie credits begin. An Olivia Newton-John sound-alike sings the Scobie Malone title song. There are times you go into a screening, nervous that high hopes will leave you disappointed. (Case in point: Tron Legacy.) The Way Back is a movie that seemed to be tailor made for me given the curious topics which hold me in strange fascination. Luckily, Peter Weir, his Dp Russell Boyd, Ed Harris, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan and Mark Effing Strong delivered what I wanted, making this a picture I love dearly.
Reason for wanting to love The Way Back A:
It is not uncommon, in a Jewish family or with Jewish friends, to meet older relatives who survived concentration camps. My very good friend, however, has a Great Uncle (still alive, I believe) born in the part of Poland that, after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, came under Soviet rule. When Russia went to war with Germany, you'd think that the Kremlin would be smart enough to...

The Telluride Film Festival, which takes place every Labor Day weekend in the mind-expandingly gorgeous San Juan Mountains, is the favorite film festival of anyone who's ever attended it. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. The four-day festival is neither hectic nor amped, but it nonetheless manages to showcase the best of each year's Cannes and Toronto line-ups, as well as invariably some rarities and older films to savor.
This year, Eric D. Snider and I will be bringing you the news and reviews from Colorado. (It's Eric's first trip, which is doubly exciting.) And the line-up, announced earlier today, looks excellent, showcasing Cannes favorites like Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful, Mike Leigh's Another Year, and Stephen Frears' Tamara Drewe, as well as high-profile premieres like Mark Romanek's eagerly awaited Never Let Me Go (with superstar novelist Kazuo Ishiguro in attendance) and Tom Hooper's The King's Speech,...

Colorado mountain fest, now in its 37th year, officially announced its program Thursday, and festival directors Tom Luddy, Gary Meyer and Julie Huntsinger have stocked the high-altitude event with a typical mix of the new and unseen, the archival and obscure. Scott Hicks: One Of The Boys
By
Alex Simon
Scott Hicks made his bones as a filmmaker the old-fashioned way, paying his dues as a crew member during the Australian film industry’s birth in the 1970s. Born in Uganda March 4, 1953, and raised in Kenya, England and finally Australia, Hicks worked his way up to assistant director for soon-to-be big names such as Peter Weir and Bruce Beresford before moving into directing industrial films and documentaries for television. Hicks didn’t direct his first feature, Freedom, until 1982, and had to wait for his second, in 1996, to put him on the A-list. Shine was the true story of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott, and his battle with mental illness. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won a Best Actor statuette for Geoffrey Rush, who played Helfgott as an adult.
Hicks has been choosy since then, going back and...
