Nostalgia for summer camps is a strange thing. Whether you've been to camp as a child, a teen camper, and/or an adult counselor, chances are most of your experiences there have involved some sort of hardship, if not anxiety or humiliation. Yes, it's essentially the same as going to school itself, but intensified; instead of getting to go home every night, you're forced to spend 24/7 deep in an isolated rural area with the people that you're attending camp with. In every meaningful way, there is no escape.
Perhaps, then, this nostalgic pull that summer camp has can be chalked up to good ol' trauma bonding. In other words, it's not about the experience itself while it's happening, but about the sense of closeness and accomplishment one feels upon just getting through it. That would explain why so many nostalgic summer camp movies tend to fall into either the horror,...

The 1980s was a heady time that found Bill Murray first experimenting (unsuccessfully) with dramatic acting. After SNL, Caddyshack, Meatballs, and 1981's Stripes launched him into stardom, Murray took a chance with an elevated project of sorts: an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 1944 novel, The Razor's Edge. The film was a box office bomb, making just half of its budget, and was derided by critics. Murray wouldn't give another dramatic lead performance in years. But there's an alternate timeline in which Murray leads a blockbuster war movie directed by Clint Eastwood in the '80s.
Murray, who can be seen in the new films Riff Raff and The Friend, went on the Howard Stern Show on Siriux Xm and shared the surprising story of his close call with a Clint collaboration. "A long time ago, I was watching the Clint Eastwood movies of the day, like Thunderbolt and Lightfoot,...

As TV shows go, "The Office" is a goldmine of endless trivia, as evidenced by the fact that multiple former stars have started podcasts breaking down the series since it went off the air in 2013. The "Office Ladies" podcast is hosted by Pam and Angela actors Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, while Kevin actor Brian Baumgartner hosted the podcast "An Oral History of The Office" before spinning that off into yet another podcast "The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner." Each of these retrospectives are must-listen resources for fans of the original series, as they provide exhaustive insights into how the show was produced, revealing every bit of behind-the-scenes trivia you could possibly want -- and there's a heck of a lot of it.
One particularly interesting aspect of these series is that it allows the former cast members to reminisce about some of the series' high-profile directors. Throughout its nine-season run,...

Fans of Ghostbusters comedy legend Harold Ramis will be able to stream his last-ever movie next month. The filmmaker's final directorial effort before his death in 2014 was the prehistoric comedy Year One.
Even some of Ramis' biggest fans may have missed Year One since it under-performed in theaters in 2009, and was largely dismissed by critics. Hulu subscribers will get to decide for themselves about whether Year One was wrongfully ignored when it becomes available to stream on April 1, 2025.
Year One Comes to Hulu in April
Jack Black and Michael Cera starred in Ramis' spoof of the biblical Book of Exodus, as two primitives traveling to the sin-filled village of Sodom to save their love interests (June Diane Raphael and Juno Temple). The comedy boasted a hugely impressive cast, including a Superbad reunion for Cera with co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Bill Hader, Olivia Wilde, Paul Rudd and David Cross all featured in Year One too.

We all remember how Space Jam pokes a little fun at the fact that Michael Jordan once dropped his über-successful NBA career to play baseball, but what most people don't know is that he isn't the only member of that cast to have done so. That's because Bill Murray once did the same thing, venturing into baseball in the late 1970s while he was still part of the Saturday Night Live cast, and shortly before his big acting break in Ivan Reitman's Meatballs. Murray is known for his eccentric and even somewhat hedonistic shenanigans off-screen, and, somehow, those even got him to play professional baseball early in his career. For real.

Tina Fey, the former head writer and cast member of NBC's Saturday Night Live, has revealed that she's part of the writing team behind SNL50, the 50th anniversary special that will air this Sunday on NBC. Even though Fey's experience on the show speaks for itself, returning as a staff writer meant that she had to clean the rust off of her comedy writing skills. However, a visit from a very special SNL icon made everything better.
Fey was a guest on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon alongside her former SNL co-star, dear friend and collaborator, Amy Poehler (via Entertainment Weekly). The conversation turned to what's brewing for SNL50, and Fey revealed that she's part of a team of staff writers for the special: "I know a little bit about what's taking shape because I am working on it as a staff writer, which I'm pretty excited about,...

Bill Murray is used to making collaborators cry mid-production, but those stories usually make it into the tabloids, not The Tonight Show.
We are now just three days away from the highly anticipated, star-studded and Bill Hader-less SNL 50 special when the most revered institution in American comedy will celebrate its half-century anniversary alongside many of its most illustrious alumni. The guest list for the rare Sunday evening episode of Saturday Night Live is more star-powered than the average Oscars ceremony or Met Gala, and with so many returning greats counting on the all-star SNL 50 writers’ staff to come up with a solid show, the pressure has already reverted Tina Fey back into Liz Lemon mode.

Days ahead of the 50th anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live,” and it’s really starting to feel like the “Avengers” for comedy nerds. While on “The Tonight Show,” Tina Fey told Jimmy Fallon about the “amazing” pep talk Bill Murray gave her while she was preparing for the event. Also, Amy Poehler was there, in case you want another cast member name drop.
Fey revealed she returned to “Saturday Night Live” to be a staff writer on the 50th anniversary special alongside Seth Meyers, Paula Pell, Emily Spivey and John Mulaney.
“Going back to being on the writing staff, I immediately regressed,” Fey said on Wednesday night. “I was eating garbage. I was really grouchy. But then something amazing happened.”
That amazing event was a certain beloved “Groundhog Day” star also returning to the halls of 30 Rock.
“An angel appeared in the form of Bill Murray. He was in this incredibly wonderful mood.

August of 1985 saw the release of one of the great zombie movies of all time. And we’re not talking about George Romero’s Day of the Dead, though some will argue that particular sequel deserves to be in the conversation. We’re talking about Dan O’Bannon’s punk-rock horror-comedy The Return of the Living Dead, which introduced the world to speedy, brain-craving zombies – who also have a thing or two to say when they’re feeling chatty. The movie was by no means a blockbuster, but it did very respectable business, making around $30 million worldwide off of a budget in the low single digits. Naturally, a follow-up would be necessary in the eyes of that film’s producer Tom Fox, who assumed the Living Dead title was due for the franchise treatment in the vein of Friday the 13th. It would take three years, but we did eventually get...

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lofting died "unexpectedly" on Wednesday at her home in Burbank, California. No additional details were shared about her passing, though Lofting's death was confired by her agents, Nery Lemus and Christopher Arsaga of CelebWorx. In a statement, the two noted, “As one of the 10 founding actors at our agency, she meant the world to us and our company."
Lofting was born on Feb. 2, 1940, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her career as a voiceover artist began in 1979 when she started voicing the role of Princess Invidia for the TV series Star Blazers. She followed this up with her casting at the voice of Aunt May Parker in the animated Spider-Man series that aired in the early 1980s; Lofting also provided the voice of Black Cat for the cartoon show.

In the late 1970s and early '80s, a new wave of comedy was taking over with Hollywood's rising stars like Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis. Reitman had already found success in 1979 with Meatballs, which was co-written by Ramis and starred Murray, who was already a well-known name thanks to being a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Murray also starred in Caddyshack, which was written and directed by Ramis as well.

Maybe this sad clown folk hero is hitting karaoke night or doing a frat’s dishes or crashing a kickball game or bartending at some random joint or giving a speech at a bachelor party or popping in for a wedding photo shoot. Bill Murray is that “fun” uncle, the loose one with no clear direction yet always grounded in…well, whatever he wants. Maybe he’ll show up, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll have a job this year, maybe he won’t bother. Maybe he’ll sock a male co-worker on the nose, maybe he’ll direct misconduct at a woman. Bill Murray is one unpredictable dude, his actions described as erupting “a trail of hysteria,” the man himself as “The Murricane.” Oh, and he’s made some of the greatest comedies,...

The final moments of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire features a sweet tribute to Ivan Reitman, which is a fitting farewell to the legendary director. For most of its run-time, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has fun bringing back characters and locations from the original Ghostbusters movies to interact with the next generation of the franchise. This includes a few key tributes to past characters and concepts, bringing back much of the original surviving cast for certain moments.
However, the sweetest tribute to the history of the series comes towards the end of the film, and takes on multiple additional meanings. Instead of just being a chance to highlight the franchise's past and future, the ending of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire also includes a sweet note that explains the film was "For Ivan." This is a reference to one of the creatives who was responsible for the original Ghostbusters, and whose impact on the franchise has been felt for decades.

There likely wasn’t a path to a win for Jean Doumanian when she took the reins from Lorne Michaels at Saturday Night Live in 1980. The show not only lost Michaels but all of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players, several of whom had gone on to be major movie stars. The new cast would inevitably be compared unfavorably to the first, but it didn’t help that Joe Piscopo was the closest thing Doumanian had found to a star. She’d also cast young Eddie Murphy, but inexplicably kept him relegated to the bench for the first part of the show’s sixth season.
“I could never describe to you in words how painful those first 10 months really were,” Piscopo said in oral history Live From New York. “You just knew that this was America’s favorite television show, and yet here we were, taking it right into the toilet.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire pays tribute to Ivan Reitman in a subtle nod to his 1973 film, Cannibal Girls. Cannibal Girls follows a couple who are terrorized by a group of beautiful, cannibalistic women. The Cannibal Girls reference in Frozen Empire is the third to occur in the Ghostbusters franchise.
It may be subtle, but one line from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is actually the perfect nod to Ghostbusters director, Ivan Reitman. Over the years, Reitman has been at the very core of every Ghostbusters movie. In 1984, Reitman directed and produced the very first Ghostbusters movie. Five years later, he returned for Ghostbusters II. From there, he continued to be a producer on every subsequent Ghostbusters film, including the 2016 remake and the two modern-day reboots starring McKenna Grace. Though Reitman passed away in 2022, his legacy remains in one humorous way in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Columbia Pictures never wanted to make Ghostbusters. Well, to put a finer point on it, those who technically ran the studio out of New York City (then as a Coca-Cola subsidiary) wanted no part in the catching ghost business—so much so that lawyers got involved. But by the time the Manhattan executives heard about the project, the Columbia Pictures chairman out in actual Hollywood, Frank Price, had already greenlit the movie and put a seeming target on his back.
Such was the opinion of “high-concept” and special effects-driven comedies in the early 1980s.
Released 40 years ago this month, Ghostbusters has obviously outlived those early doubts. It’s a pop culture touchstone with the same kind of tenacity Slimer displays at a wedding reception buffet. There’s always room for more bustin’, whether it be by way of loving tributes to this classic of 1980s comedy, or through new attempts to expand the brand.

Rich Eisen recently asked Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F star Judge Reinhold to verify an urban legend. Did John Candy keep a bathtub full of beer in his hotel room during the filming of the 1981 comedy Stripes because the movie was being made in a dry county in Kentucky?
“Correct,” Reinhold responded. “Very correct.”
Reinhold had to explain to Candy, “who was like the king of Molson,” what a dry county was. Apparently, there’s no such thing in Candy’s native Canada. “So when I first told him, ‘No, a dry county is a place in the United States where you can’t buy alcohol,’” Reinhold explained. “He was like, ‘Yeah, right.’”
Candy couldn’t wrap his Canuck brain around the concept. “What do you mean, the weather is dry? What are you talking about?’”
“I said, ‘You can’t buy alcohol in this county.’”
Candy was still baffled.

By 1984, films like “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977) “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T.” (1982) had firmly established the summer blockbuster craze, with Steven Spielberg productions leading the way. On June 8, 1984, two films were released simultaneously that continued the summer blockbuster trend, while also establishing new trends with their combination of horror/comedy and fresh marketing and merchandising strategies. Unsurprisingly, one film was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and his “Gremlins” battled for the number one box office spot with familiar faces from “Saturday Night Live” who were now “Ghostbusters.” Their quotable scripts and at-the-time unique blend of humor and gore have had long-lasting effects on the film industry and on pop culture that continue to resonate four decades later. 1984 was a downright magical year at the movies. The number of titles released in that fateful year that have become classics is downright staggering. This time out, working from a script by Jessica Landry she’s returning to the slasher genre with a tale of sex, religion and dead teenagers.

Is it the seminarian who went mad and slaughtered the priests, nuns and their fellow students twenty years ago, or someone cashing in on the legend? That remains to be seen.

Sherman, who joined the cast of SNL in 2021 and also performs under the name Sarah Squirm outside of the show, has developed a trademark surrealist comedy style with frequent elements of body horror. She’s brought that identifiable humor to SNL in sketches like “Eyes” and “Meatballs”, and has even brightened the palette of “Weekend Update” with her quirky outfits on “Sarah’s News.”
In a new video posted to his social media channels, viral apartment tour vlogger Caleb Simpson asks Sherman for a tour of her apartment. Standing outside the NBC marquee at 30 Rock, Sherman opts to give him a tour of her dressing room and office instead.

The Masked Singer season 12 filming will happen in June and July, creating excitement for what's to come in fall 2024. It's unclear if Nicole Scherzinger will return for The Masked Singer season 12. The Masked Singer season 11 is still underway, with recent eliminations like Book and Afghan Hound, setting the stage for TV Theme Night.
The Masked Singer season 12 won't air until fall 2024, but Reddit users just uncovered a timeframe for when filming will take place. The celebrity singing competition series has been on the air since 2019, with a wide array of contestants gracing the stage over the years. The Masked Singer winners include T-Pain (Monster), Wayne Brady (Fox), LeAnn Rimes (Sun), Amber Riley (Harp) and Ne-Yo (Cow). Some of the celebrities who compete on The Masked Singer are actual singers, while the rest are actors and other public figures who still give it their all to try to stay in the...

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, who are out promoting Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Both Rudd and Coon have been outspoken in their love of the original Ghostbusters, as well as the original cast, and I couldn’t help but put them both on the spot a little bit. Given that young audiences are discovering the original Ghostbusters thanks to these new movies, I wondered which classic comedy featuring some of the cast Rudd and Coon might suggest younger audiences check out next.
“I love so many of them. I might say Stripes because of the Harold Ramis connection there. But, you can also do Groundhog Day because of the Harold Ramis connection. Or Caddyshack. I mean, my God, there’s so many! And with Aykroyd, The Blues Brothers is obviously such a major thing.”
Coon also chimed in, mentioning that the old...

You probably already know what will be number one on this list. The “Ghostbusters” franchise has gone through its ups and downs, reboots and legacyquels. But as the first film approaches its 40th anniversary this June, there’s little doubt in anybody’s mind that it remains the definitive ghost-catching movie of them all.
In the early ’80s, Dan Aykroyd — then just fresh off his stint as an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member — was inspired by his own belief in the supernatural to write a script about a group of eccentric academics who start a pest-control business where the “pests” they’re catching are malevolent spirits. Recruiting former “SNL” castmate Bill Murray to star, comedian Harold Ramis to help rewrite the screenplay, and “Meatballs” and “Stripes” filmmaker Ivan Reitman to direct. The final film, which hit theaters in 1984, starred Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the four Ghostbusters,...

The Masked Singer season 11's Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg calls out the show for not airing all of her guesses. Despite not always being aired, Jenny's guesses are known for being accurate on the show. The Masked Singer Season 11 has revealed three of its 16 characters so far, with Jenny making close guesses.
The Masked Singer season 11 has had some incredible performances and unmaskings so far, and panelist Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg is now revealing that the show has edited out some of her guesses for the mystery celebrities' true identities. Jenny returned to the Masked Singer for season 11, along with host Nick Cannon, and fellow panelists Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong. However, Rita Ora joined the panel for the first time, replacing original panelist Nicole Scherzinger, who was starring in London's West End production of Sunset Boulevard and unavailable for filming.

The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)

Chicago – Bill Murray is a son of Chicagoland, born and raised in the area and beginning his career at The Second City. To honor his friend and collaborator Harold Ramis, Murray made an appearance on February 2nd, 2024, on Chicago’s Navy Pier on behalf of Harold Ramis Day and of course his classic film “Groundhog Day.”

Howard Stern has been one of the most controversial – and revered – figures in the history of modern media. With a passion for the field as a child, Stern’s climb to the top of the radio world truly began in the ‘80s. And he did it off of his unique, button-pressing, FCC-clashing brand and humor: the boobs, the prank calls, the Wack Pack, all of it all made Howard Stern one of the most recognizable figures in all of media. And so as his markets grew and his written word topped the charts – but long before his first $500 million contract with Sirius – it was time for Stern to enter the movie business…with something a little more commercially viable than Butt Bongo Fiesta.

Ghostbusters was a pop-cultural phenomenon upon its release in 1984, but subsequent attempts to replicate its success have felt forced and motivated by financial gain. The original film had a magic recipe of supernatural elements and great comedy, with a standout cast and catchy premise, making it a success in its own right. While the 2016 female-led reboot received good reviews from critics, it faced backlash from hardcore fans who felt replacing the male leads was disrespectful, leading to its box office failure. The upcoming sequels seem to rely heavily on nostalgia and fan service.
If you were around for the 1984 release of Ghostbusters and didn't enjoy the film, there's a feeling you're betraying your generation. The film has a sacred place in many people's hearts in the same way as other '80s classics such as Back to the Future or Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's a space that is...

Saturday Night Live should get pretty much a full season after the writers and the studios reached an agreement to end the strike.
The NBC show had Season 48 cut short by three episodes when the writers walked out at the beginning of May.
The show, which traditionally restarts at the very end of September or the beginning of October, is now likely to return on either October 7 or 14, pending a vote by the WGA.
Essentially, the WGA negotiating committee are expected to recommend the agreement and send it to the WGA West Board and WGA East Council for a vote, likely scheduled for Tuesday. This could potentially lift the restraining order and allow writers return to work as the deal is waiting to be ratified.
After the 2007/08 strike ended on February 12, 2008, production commenced on Season 33 of SNL on February 18 for the February 23 episode. Former SNL cast member and 30 Rock...

Wet Hot American Summer took comedy to a new level in 2001. We Hot American Summer provided several popular comedy actors with a launch pad. Wet Hot American Summer has a legacy that any comedy would want.
With summer winding down, it's the perfect time to look back at the quintessential "last day of summer camp" movie -- Wet Hot American Summer. Whas may not have gotten the reception the filmmakers were hoping for upon its release in 2001 -- with just 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes -- but time has been very kind to the irreverent comedy. Not only does it feature one of the most star-studded casts, but it also features a comedy style that has only become more of a staple in the nearly two decades since the film's release.

Daniel Goldberg, the co-screenwriter of “Stripes” and producer of feature comedies like “Space Jam,” “Old School” and the “Hangover” trilogy, died Wednesday at age 74.

Director, producer and screenwriter Jason Reitman, son of director Ivan Reitman, is paying tribute to his late father’s dear friend, writer-producer Daniel Goldberg, who died today at 74. Toronto’s favorite son turns his eye toward New York, and back to 1975 for his next project. Jason Reitman is currently producing the next “Ghostbusters” picture with director and co-writer Gil Kenan and leads Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, but he’s got his next project lined up at Sony Pictures.
As per Deadline, the “Juno” and “Up in the Air” director will be back behind the camera for an untitled “Saturday Night Live” opening night project. Kenan will co-write the script.
Casting has not been announced, but somebody out there is (probably) going to be playing producer Lorne Michaels and first-episode cast members like Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and Garrett Morris. Also, potentially, writers like Michael O’Donoghue, Al Franken, Anne Beatts, Alan Zweibel, and others. Stirring parents up into a paranoid mob is an American tradition, and it's one of our lousiest. The poorly-researched anti-comic book tome "Seduction of the Innocent" led to a public comic book burning in the 1950s and decades of oppressive self-censorship within the publishing world. Violent video games like "Mortal Kombat" were accused of corrupting our children in the 1990s, leading to congressional hearings and a video game rating system.
That these waves of mob mentality are almost universally viewed, years later, as embarrassing ignorance and/or obvious manipulations doesn't seem to stop the cycle from starting up, over and over again. Apparently, nobody ever learns anything. Even when we finally admit that there was nothing terribly sinister about the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons — which was also accused of corrupting kids for many years — and transform it into a family-friendly fantasy movie (for the second time), we find ourselves...

While still considered a classic today, Groundhog Day producer Trevor Albert recalls the tense shoot with star Bill Murray and co-writer/director Harold Ramis. The 1983 film centered on Phil Connors, a cynical TV weatherman becoming fed up with his life who finds himself stuck in a time loop on February 2 while covering the eponymous celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Co-starring Andie MacDowell, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray and Rick Overton, Groundhog Day scored widespread acclaim upon its release for its mix of wholesome themes and darker humor, with Murray and Tobolowsky's performances in particular garnering largely positive reviews.
In honor of the film's 30th anniversary, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Trevor Albert to discuss the legacy of the fantasy comedy Groundhog Day. While looking back at the production of the classic film, the producer recalled the tense shooting environment between Murray and Ramis, which ultimately led to the disintegration of their longstanding creative partnership and friendship.

Saturday Night Live‘s latest prescription drug parody digs into the never-ending emotional confusion about the virus. Drug commercials are such an easy target for comedy. They portray a strange world where everyone is both deathly ill, but also cheerful and thankful for whatever wonder drug is curing their ailment. Look too sick and nobody will think your drug works; look too cheerful and people won’t think their sickness is bad enough to need your drug. So there’s plenty of room for jokes.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, any movie that featured a Not Ready for Prime Time Player from the first five seasons of "Saturday Night Live" was a big deal. The show was an intoxicating mix of counterculture humor and hip comedic irreverence, and viewers were eager to see its stars break free from the watchful eye of network censors. John Belushi in "National Lampoon's Animal House," Bill Murray in "Meatballs," Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in "The Blues Brothers..." people showed up to these films primed to laugh, and, for the most part, they delivered.
