It has been a banner year for Martin Delemazure, the managing director of Paris-based composer agency Grande Ourse.
He had seven films at the Cannes Film Festival in May featuring music by composers on the agency’s books, topped by Jury Prize-winner Emilia Pérez, which also won Best Cannes Soundtrack for Grande Ourse talent Camille, who takes a co-music credit with life and work partner Clément Ducol.
The other titles spanned Palme d’Or contender Wild Diamond, for which the soundtrack was composed by Audrey Ismaël, who also wrote the music for Un Certain Regard title The Kingdom.
Grande Ourse also represents David Sztanke, who wrote the music for a second film in the sidebar, Dog on Trial. Elsewhere in the Official Selection, client Matteo Locasciulli wrote the soundtrack for bio-doc Jacques Demy, the Pink and the Black in Cannes Classics.

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.

Season 1 of The Golden Girls is widely regarded as one of the best, addressing significant topics for women over 50 and featuring standout episodes like "A Little Romance." Season 7 is also praised for its memorable episodes and poignant ending.

Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.
Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.
Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
The willowy blonde actress with the characteristically throaty voice appeared in two Altman films in 1970; the other was the more experimental “Brewster McCloud,” in which she starred with Bud Cort and Michael Murphy. In this film, which did not have a conventional narrative, Kellerman played Louise, the mother of Cort’s bewinged character, Brewster.

Allan Burns, co-creator of classic sitcoms “The Munsters” and ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died this weekend at the age of 85.
Born in Baltimore and a graduate of the University of Oregon, Burns got his start in showbiz in 1959 as an animator for Jay Ward Productions, working on classic cartoons like “Rocky & Bullwinkle,” “Dudley Do-Right” and “George of the Jungle.” During that time, he also left his mark on supermarket aisles for decades as the creator of the famous cereal mascot Cap’n Crunch.
In 1964, Burns made the leap into live-action TV by teaming up with fellow “Rocky & Bullwinkle” writer Chris Hayward to create “The Munsters,” a legendary sitcom starring Fred Gwynne as the patriarch of a jovial family of monsters — and one human daughter — who are just trying to get by like any American family. Allan Burns, a television producer and screenwriter best known for cocreating and cowriting for the television sitcoms The Munsters, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Rhoda, died Saturday at home. He was 85 and no details were immediately available on the cause of death.

Diane Lane is, objectively, a national treasure. Since her first role in A Little Romance in 1979, the accomplished actress has played the ingenue, the romantic foil, the action star, the woman scorned and so much, much more.
Just last year, Lane starred alongside Kevin Costner and Lesley Manville in Let Him Go, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha. The film tells the story of George and Margaret Blackledge, who fight to save their grandson from his indoctrination into the evil Weboy family. In our positive review, we wrote that, “Not surprisingly, [Diane] Lane is the heart at the center of Let Him Go. She has been a movie star for nearly her entire life and somehow still does not get the credit she deserves. The emotional trajectory of her character is built on only a handful of scant scenes at the top of the picture.”

Director George Roy Hill has no shortage of mass appeal crowd pleasers on his resume, but I don’t think he ever made a more purely delightful or deeply moving film that 1979’s A Little Romance. A sort of prepubescent Before Sunrise, the movie follows two 13-year olds – French movie fanatic Daniel (Thelonious Bernard) and American bookworm Lauren (Diane Lane in her film debut) – who fall in love in Paris and try to make the most of their summer romance before Lauren is dragged back to the states. Perfectly calibrated on […]...

Dapper old rascal and park-bench regular Julius (Laurence Olivier) wants to make a place in our jumbled world for A Little Romance. Specifically, he aids and abets Diane Lane and Thelonious Bernard as 13-year-olds in Paris whose genius IQs are no match for the innocent spell of first love. They decide to seal their union with a sunset kiss under Venice’s Bridge of Sighs. It’s a perfectly impulsive puppy-love scheme — and a perfect trek for pied piper Julius to lead. Gracefully scripted by Allan Burns (Mary Tyler Moore), overflowing with Continental charm under the direction of George Roy Hill (The Sting) and set to a sublime Oscar-winning* score by Georges Delerue,...

Varèse Sarabande, renowned as Hollywood’s preeminent soundtrack label, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, going into its fifth decade under new ownership — Concord Music acquired the label in February — while renewing its goal of presenting the best of movie and TV music, both current and past.
According to label VP and veteran producer Robert Townson, Varèse’s mandate hasn’t changed. It’s all about “focusing on the big picture, maintaining a role in the community and standing by the next generation of composers,” Townson says. “The entire history of Varèse is about taking calculated gambles, maintaining an artistic integrity and releasing scores even when we knew we were going to lose money.”
Townson should know. He has produced more than 1,400 soundtracks since his association with the label began 32 years ago. As an ambitious 19-year-old in Whitby, Ontario, he launched his Masters Film Music label to provide a home...

As specialized distributors head to Cannes, Eleanor Coppola’s French valentine “Paris Can Wait” (Sony Pictures Classics) scored with arthouse moviegoers. It’s only the fourth 2017 limited release to break the increasingly rare $20,000 per-theater-average mark.
These days, movies with older audience appeal are sustaining the market — and will likely form the core demo for similar available new films at Cannes. Eleanor Coppola (“Apocalypse Now” documentary “Heart of Darkness”) makes her narrative film debut at 81 with her semi-autobiographical first screenplay, starring Diane Lane as the wife of a self-involved film producer (Alec Baldwin).
New York also saw a handful of other small but still promising initial results, led by Cate Blanchett stunt-theater piece “Manifesto” (Film Rise), Israeli marriage story “The Wedding Plan” (Roadside Attractions) and “Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe” (First Run).

Clarissa Explains It All premiered in March 1991, meaning that this month it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Yep, if Clarissa Darling were around today (and had been aging in real-world time since the show first debuted), she'd be 38 years old, maybe even with a 13-year-old Clarissa of her own.
It's not just that the Melissa Joan Hart sitcom was a popular show for pre-teen girls or even pre-teens in general; it's that it helped established a network identity for the channel it was on, a still-young Nickelodeon, and helped shape a lot of similarly focused shows that aired throughout the rest of the '90s.

A little teleporting. A little romance. A few secrets. And a lot of intrigue.
That pretty much sums up where we're at with the new CW series The Tomorrow People. But with tonight's episode - "Girl, Interrupted" - things are sure to get more and more complicated for Stephen (Robbie Amell) and his new circle of 'friends,' including Peyton List's Cara.
Will the spark between Stephen and Cara grow? If so, what will that mean for Cara's current relationship with the suspicious Luke Mitchell's John? Will Stephen working with Jedikiah at Ultra further put The Tomorrow People in danger?
We caught up with List on the Vancouver set recently to talk about the new series and how she's enjoying the fight scenes that, given their abilities, brings teleporting into the mix. Gather up some scoop from the star now:

When an actor is invited to a party celebrating casting directors, he or she RSVPs an emphatic yes. And so it was that the July 29 premiere party (at the HBO screening room and later at Manhattan’s Gramercy Park Hotel) for Tom Donahue’s documentary “Casting By”—premiering on HBO Aug. 5—was a particularly star-studded affair. As people chatted and flipped through the “Casting By” issue of Backstage, bold-faced names including Martin Scorsese, Parker Posey, Zach Grenier, Stephen Lang, and Dana Delany mingled with Donahue and casting directors Joanna Colbert, Amanda Mackey, Juliet Taylor, and Ellen Lewis. Following a screening of Donahue’s film—which included a discussion with Donahue, Taylor, and moderator Scott Foundas—much of the audience trooped over to the Gramercy Terrace for cocktails inspired by some of the movies discussed in the documentary. A favorite among the crowd was the Sting, a highbrow bloody mary made...

Last season, I presciently titled one of my recaps "The Student Becomes the Teacher." The episode in question showed Jimmy dispensing the wisdom he had gleaned from Nucky's tutelage. Now, even in death, Jimmy's sagaciousness continues to haunt his former mentor, with his prophecy from the end of Season Two ringing true: "The only thing to worry about is when you run out of company." The attack on Babette's Supper Club, which killed Billie and injured Nucky (now suffering from a concussion), sent a very clear message to all East Coast bootleggers,...

By Sean O’Connell Hollywoodnews.com: David O. Russell’s Oscar contender “The Silver Linings Playbook” will open The 2012 Savannah Film Festival, an annual event that this year will showcase similar awards contenders like Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight,” Dustin Hoffman’s “Quartet,” the crowd-pleasing musical comedy “The Sapphires” and Michael Haneke’s emotionally draining “Amour.” The fest will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 27. It also will conclude with a 3D screening of DreamWorks Animation’s holiday blockbuster “Rise of the Guardians.” Russell’s comedy has been building awards momentum since it took home the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Hollywood Film Awards announced so far that it will recognize Robert De Niro with the “Hollywood Supporting Actor” award, as well as Russell with this year’s “Hollywood Director Award.” Expect them to be the first of many prestigious award nominations “Silver Linings” picks...

Tall and part blonde/part brunette, Leslye Headland darted into our interview and gave me a warm greeting and an intense gaze. She explained that she had just run across town in Manhattan to walk her dog in between interviews while promoting her debut film, Bachelorette. The film is based on her stage play of the same name, about a gang of attractive girls (Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Kaplan and Isla Fisher) behaving badly before their friend’s wedding. I ask what her dog’s name is. “His name is Ramius. Which is Sean Connery’s name in The Hunt For Red October,” she says, deadpan. “My life is littered with film references.”
After leaving a job as an assistant to Harvey Weinstein, Headland moved to L.A. to pursue writing full-time. To help supplement her savings, she got a job at a video store, where she was the only woman surrounded by “cutthroat film nerds.

According to Variety, the "Lost" actor has signed on to "Emperor," a thriller set in post World War II Japan. Yes another name has been added to Zack Snyder’s hotly anticipated Superman reboot, Superman: Man of Steel, and this time it’s Superman’s Mum!
Diane Lane has been cast as Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill), according to a Warner Bros. press release. This news comes hot on the heels of rumours that “The Lord of the Rings” actor, Viggo Mortensen could possibly be in line to play rogue Kryptonian, General Zod in the picture. Although this rumour has yet to be confirmed.
“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman” Snyder said in a statement, “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Yet another name has been added to the growing cast of Zack Snyder's as-yet-untitled reboot of the "Superman" movie franchise. "Unfaithful" actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent in the film, according to a Warner Bros. press release.
Calling the character "the only mother Clark Kent has ever known," the official announcement makes no mention of any other actors cast in the film except for Henry Cavill, the British actor chosen to play the Man of Steel earlier this year. Rumors had pegged Kevin Costner as a "person of interest" for the role of Jonathan Kent, Martha's husband and the adoptive father of Clark Kent.
Despite recent reports that the studio was narrowing in on a female lead for the film — not Lois Lane — that piece of the Superman reboot puzzle remains a mystery.
Here's the official text of the announcement:

Despite recent reports that the studio was narrowing in on a female lead for the film — not Lois Lane — that piece of the Superman reboot puzzle remains a mystery.
Here's the official text of the announcement:
