India's first crossover hero who showed his calibre both at home and abroad
Image
The youngest of Bollywood’s famous Kapoor brothers, he did not have their one defining and enduring cinematic image – Raj’s naive "tramp" identity in the Charlie Chaplin tradition or Shammi’s Elvis-like jiving, rebellious "playboy" persona, but went to surpass both in sheer diversity of his acting.

With his copybook good looks, rakish smile, infectious charm, toothy grin and languid drawl, or the air of earnestness, playing romantic roles, be they of businessmen, police inspectors, college students, et al came naturally to him, but Shashi Kapoor went on to play more ‘common man’ roles, decadent princes, aging poets and even angels with the same charm and intensity.

Born on March 18, 1938 in the then Calcutta to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarn ‘Rama’ Devi, Balbir Raj ‘Shashi’ Kapoor was destined to walk in his family’s footsteps on the silver screen.

Though he first appeared on screen as a child artiste in...

The senior actor recently appeared on chat show ‘The Invincibles’ hosted by Bollywood actor Arbaaz Khan and revealed that the scar is from a childhood injury. He said: “I was very naughty during my childhood. One day, I saw my uncle shaving his face. Then to imitate him, I too ran a razor across my face when I was a child.”

He continued: “First my uncle’s daughter tried, she cut her cheek and started crying. I then told her, ‘Tumko nahi aata hai, main tumhe dikhaata hoon kaise karte hain‘ (let me show you how it’s done since you know nothing). Then I went ahead to cut my own cheek.

Iftekhar: A talented artist and chess player who became Hindi film's stock policeman
Image
"Bhagne ki koshish mat karna. Humne tumhe chaaron taraf se gher liya hai. Bhalai isi mein hai ke tum apne aap ko kanoon ke hawaale kar do," or its near variants, became the template for the denouement of scores of action Hindi films from the 1950s to the 1980s, as a pistol-toting Iftekhar, usually accompanied by a squad of policemen, reached the spot to rescue the hero and heroine and/or round up the villains.

While his near-contemporary Jagdish Raj (Khurana) holds the record of maximum outings as a police officer in Hindi films (144), Iftekhar was not far behind with 75-odd such roles, playing an Inspector/Dsp/Sp/Commissioner in top films like "Ab Dilli Dur Nahin" (1957), "Guide" (1965), "Teesri Manzil" (1966), "Do Dooni Char" (1968), "Ittefaq" (1969), "Johny Mera Naam" (1970), "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" (1971), "Zanjeer" (1973), "Majboor" (1974), "Fakira" (1976), "Don" (1978) and "Krodhi" (1981), among others.

His performances were so convincing that several times, he was saluted...

Sharib Hashmi: I do not mind being typecast on screen
Image
By Arundhuti Banerjee

Mumbai, Dec 9 (Ians) Actor Sharib Hashmi, who recently appeared in the web film Darbaan, says that he has a guy-next-door image and, though he gets typecast in films at times, he has no complaints.

"As an actor it is important to grab the opportunity to do different roles in every project. I do not mind being typecast or getting stereotyped. For example, Charlie Chaplin -- we have seen him playing the same character, the gags are different and the stories are different. But it is the same character in different situations, right?" Sharib told Ians.

"As long as I am bringing something to the character, and enjoy doing it, I do not comp;lain even though I may have played such a character 10 times before. If Mr. Amitabh Bachchan would have thought of getting stereotype and refuses to do those characters, Indian cinema would have missed out...

Remembering Yash Chopra: A Lover of Indian Cinema
“I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra

Mr. Chopra is an undisputable legend and he has crafted some of the finest commercial films the Bollywood audiences have ever feasted their eyes upon. If Satyajit Ray is considered by Indian film enthusiasts to be the supreme director when it comes to art-house cinema, Yash Chopra can be classified as the definitive director when it comes to mainstream cinema. Yash Chopra is largely famous for making wonderful romantic films, though he has directed a handful of non-romantic films also. Yet no director...

Remembering Yash Chopra
Yash Chopra
“To call him the ‘King of Romance’ may be doing disservice to a prolific creator like Yash Chopra”

Yash Chopra

(27 September 1932 – 21 October 2012)

There are some who thrive on becoming a part of history. And then there are those who take it upon themselves to change it. Yash Raj Chopra belonged to the latter category. Since his first outing “Dhool ka Phool” in 1959. he churned story after fascinating story – a fertility unparalleled in the history of Hindi Cinema. Without sounding preachy or pretentious, his megaphone blared the saga of our times. At a time when India was coming to terms with the socio-economic realities of freedom, his debut film was soaked in Nehruvian Socialism. And to prove he wasn’t a flash in the pan, the very next film was on religious fundamentalism: Dharmputra (1961). His third film had the most epic ensemble cast ever assembled on Indian screens: Waqt (1965). Without revelling in the success,...
