Blank Generation (1980)

Trivia

Blank Generation

Edit
Richard Hell sensed a lot of resentment from director Ulli Lommel as the shoot went on due to Richard being the center of the film and having both Carole Bouquet and Suzanna Love's characters be his love interest and so, Lommel halfway through filming decided to write himself into the film and take some of the focus away from Richard and be Carole's love interest in the film.
When Richard Hell was asked to star in this film, he did some research on the director Ulli Lommel and screened La tendresse des loups (1973) which he felt was a brilliant film and so jumped at the chance to work with the genius behind the film. Then as the shoot for Blank Generation went on and it was becoming an increasingly miserable mess, Richard started to realize that maybe he had been wrong about Lommel. He checked Tenderness of the Wolves again and it became clear why that film was a success, it wasn't because of Lommel, it was because of Kurt Raab and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Richard Hell felt that there was not one truthful moment in any scene in the film. All the acting, especially from himself and Carole Bouquet, he said was fake and forced. Richard described it as they were just puppets playing out scenes for Ulli Lommel and nothing more.
Watching the film, Richard Hell said that it was beautifully shot by Atze Glanert and had a great atmospheric score by Elliot Goldenthal, but was everything else was poorly done, from the directing, acting, editing, and the lack of any sense from the whole movie.
In an interview, Richard Hell said that none of Ulli Lommel's other films in his career, including this film, ever reached the quality of La tendresse des loups (1973).
