Netflix's Unstable Cast & Character Guide
Image
The cast of Unstable, including Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, combines Hollywood stars with emerging talent in a successful mix. Unstable shines a light on the comedic talents of its supporting cast, giving smaller actors a chance to shine alongside the leads. With positive reviews for its sharp humor and quirky characters, Unstable's unique cast plays a significant role in the show's success.

Netflix's father-son workplace comedy, Unstable, stars Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, but the rest of the show's actors are just as exciting as the leads. Unstable first premiered in 2023, while season 2 dropped in August 2024. The show follows Jackson, a socially shy young man who must save his narcissistic father from a downward spiral by working at his biotech company. Unstable has received mostly positive reviews, with many critics praising the series for its sharp humor, quirkiness, and Rob Lowe's reliable comedic performance.

Rob Lowe: Brat Pack to Backpacks
Rob Lowe in The Grinder (2015)
Many young stars were rising in Hollywood during the 1980s. It was one of the most critical decades in movie production due to its switch from focusing on films directed at adults to tween and teen flicks.

The '80s was an excellent decade for young movie fans. However, some movie stars, including Rob Lowe, had less fun, especially after journalist David Blum labeled them "The Brat Pack" in 1985.

Here's how Rob Lowe went from being a Brat Packer to being a family man and changed how he was perceived in Hollywood.

The Humble Origins of the Lowes

The term "Hollywood Icon" didn't always apply to Rob Lowe.

He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on March 17, 1964, but spent most of his childhood living in Dayton, Ohio.

Inside Rob Lowe's Life as a Dad
Image
Rob Lowe has been in the acting game since the 1980s. He got his start on screen in the ABC sitcom "A New Kind of Family" and quickly rose to fame following his role on the show. Rob was grouped in with Hollywood's "Brat Pack" of young actors, which included Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, and Emilio Estevez, after starring in classic films like "The Outsiders," "St. Elmo's Fire," and "Square Dance."

Rob's career slowed slightly during the 1990s, but understandably so, as he welcomed two sons with wife Sheryl Berkoff: Matthew Edward and John Owen Lowe. After the births of his children, the actor balanced his career with his fatherly duties, and is arguably most known for his roles as Sam Seaborn in "The West Wing," which aired from 1999-2003 and Chris Traeger in the beloved NBC sitcom "Parks and Recreation."

Rob's children are grown up now, with John...

Random Roles: Of all his films, Rob Lowe wants you to go back and watch Bad Influence
Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.

The actor: Rob Lowe is living proof that any young man can, with proper determination, grow up to play the president of the United States. Although he began his acting career in television, appearing in the ensemble of a short-lived sitcom (A New Kind Of Family) and turning up in TV movies and ABC Afterschool Specials, Lowe soon transitioned to the big screen, with his performance in 1983’s The Outsiders serving as a springboard into movie stardom. By the late 1990s, however, Lowe was back on TV in a big way, playing Deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn on The West Wing, and he’s flipped back and forth between movies and TV ever since.
