Cheech and Chong are back together again. The ‘70s stoner comedy team has drifted apart over the years, but they’ve reunited for a new buddy-comedy-slash-documentary, Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie. Not all the hard feelings from their 1980s break-up are gone, however, at least not in a new movie clip that debuted on Entertainment Weekly.
The clip features the two comics on a road trip, recreating a visual motif that ran through Cheech and Chong movies like Up in Smoke. One big difference? Cheech Marin’s trademark mustache is missing.
“You still won’t grow your mustache back,” Tommy Chong complains as they drive through the desert revisiting their comedy career. “You made such an imprint with that character, and then to have you not doing that, you know, it’s really hard to accept it.”

Few stand-up acts have reached the level of superstardom of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. As the stoner comedy duo Cheech & Chong, they were counterculture icons, selling out concerts, delivering platinum-selling records, making a fortune at the box office with original films like 1978's Up in Smoke, and even getting their own mobile games. They've also had wildly successful solo careers on-screen, from Nash Bridges to That 70s Show, Zootopia, Color Out of Space, and From Dusk Till Dawn. One of the few things they didn't have, however, was a fully authorized documentary exploring how they helped define an era and remain recognizable 50 years later through their brand baked in sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. That's about to change this April with Cheech and Chong's Last Movie and Collider can exclusively share the official trailer.

Per Deadline, the long-awaited documentary charting the life and careers of the famous stoner comedy duo is set to premiere in theaters nationwide on April 25, with special engagement showings in select locations on April 20 (4/20). Director David Bushell noted that Cheech & Chong's Last Movie "was born out of the failure to make a scripted Cheech & Chong comedy that I was set to produce almost 20 years ago. Cosmically that wasn't meant to be so I took my passion and ambition to direct, coupled it with my love of documentary, and convinced these two road dogs to let me tell their epic story."

We are just past the 40th anniversary of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's been now 42 years since the film came out and captivated audiences everywhere. It brought back an iconic Star Trek villain in Khan Noonien Singh and showcased one of the most impressive hero/villain dynamics in franchise history with Khan and James T. Kirk.
The performances of Ricardo Montalban and William Shatner captivated a generation and so much of the modern Star Trek trend follows the model that Wrath of Khan created. Even after 42 years the fans still flock to the film. In many ways, it's the touchtone of Star Trek's creativity.
This is why it was picked, alongside 24 other films, to be added to the National Film Registry for Preservation. The selections for the class of 2024 range from 1895's "Annabelle Serpentine Dance all the way to 2010's The Social Network. And no, the '1895' wasn't a typo.

As the year comes to a close, The National Film Preservation Board has announced which 25 films will be entering The Library of Congress this year. Since Congress passed the National Film Preservation Act in 1988, which established the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress, 25 films from a wide range of times and genres are carefully considered each year for entry into the Library of Congress. These films are deemed culturally or historically significant and will be conserved by the Library, which will make them more available to the American public.
This year, the Board has chosen, as they often set out to do, a wide range of films to join the 900 other preserved films of history, from the genre-breaking 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to David Fincher’s modern masterpiece The Social Network. A new batch of classic films have made their way into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry this week, including Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Bill Gunn’s Ganja & Hess!

British royal family news reveals that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle didn’t find America to their liking which is why they allegedly bought some dirt in Portugal from disgraced Prince Andrew’s son-in-law. Good luck with that.
Meghan and Harry came to the US after failing to be royal and immediately started to whine. Harry doesn’t like the First Amendment Right to Free Speech. Meghan started making jam.
The existence, and paternity, of their rumored two kids is openly questioned. What have they gotten right? Failure. No where to go but up. And east to Portugal.

Digital production studio Penny4 are due to release their first podcast on Tuesday October 22nd.
Starring Olivier Award nominee Mei Mac (RSC) and Adam Buxton (The Adam Buxton Podcast), Up In Smoke is a true-crime podcast about a fictional mystery.
Ten years after a teenage boy disappears in a horrific house fire, disgraced tabloid journalist Kay McAllister (Mei Mac) starts a podcast to prove to the world what really happened to Mason Miller - however implausible.
Through both modern day presenting and her own archive tape, Kay recounts the 2014 fire, the bizarre happenings in its wake, her questionable ethics as a reporter, and how Dci Roy Burgess (Adam Buxton) came to convict an innocent man.
Up In Smoke is not a radio play. It is a dark, supernatural drama told in the style of a factual, true-crime investigative podcast.
It’s Serial meets Twin Peaks.

Ellen Barkin has been acting in movies and TV shows for decades and has the impressive net worth that comes with a successful and long career in the film and television industry. Barkin first appeared in a professional role in an uncredited performance in Up in Smoke (1978). It wasn't until her next role, as Beth Schreiber in the 1983 Diner, that fans, critics, and filmmakers began to take notice. Barkin's career is filled with notable performances in movies and television, and there are few years when she isn't in something.
She appeared alongside Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, played one of Steven Soderbergh's best female characters in Ocean's 13, and starred in the TV adaptation of Animal Kingdom. Barkin is one of the most powerful characters in Animal Kingdom as the fearsome Smurf, bringing all the gravitas, danger, and charm she has to the role. She...

As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, new cannabinoids are making their way into the spotlight, with Hhc (hexahydrocannabinol) emerging as one of the most intriguing. At the same time, the relationship between the entertainment industry and cannabis has become increasingly visible, with many movie stars openly embracing cannabis culture. This blog will explore the growing connection between Hhc vape products and movie stars, the broader relationship between cannabis and the film industry, and why Hhc might just be the next big thing for Hollywood’s elite.
What is Hhc?
Hhc, or hexahydrocannabinol, is a relatively new cannabinoid that is gaining attention for its unique properties. It is a hydrogenated form of Thc (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. Hhc is created by adding hydrogen atoms to Thc, resulting in a cannabinoid that is similar to Thc but with some distinct differences.

Saturday Am: This weekend at the Memorial Day box office, the film industry seems to be questioning its existence, ready to jump out of a window. How can a genius, George Miller-directed tentpole prequel to the multi-Oscar winning Mad Max: Fury Road with great reviews and 4 1/2 stars PostTrak exits not be working?
The entire theatrical business is destined for streaming, oh, no! People will forever stay on their couches!
As Cher said to Nicolas Cage in Moonstruck as she smacked him in the face: “Snap out of it!” It’s not really right to make Furiosa, or Garfield, for that matter, the proxies of the Memorial Day box office.
Furiosa is still on track for $31M-$33M. For clarity purposes: The last time a film grossed in this vicinity was the 1980s with Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. However, we stand corrected: It’s the lowest No.

Tommy Chong has his cellphone pressed up tight against his ear, trying to find out where the person on the other end of the line is; at 85, his hearing isn’t what it used to be. Sitting across from him in the booth of a restaurant, located right off the lobby of an extremely busy hotel in downtown Austin, Texas, is Richard Marin. The 77-year-old actor is usually known by his nickname, “Cheech,” and he’s perusing the menu while his longtime partner loudly issues directions regarding where to meet up later.

Cheech and Chong persist in the popular culture mainly as a metonym for stoner humor, but as any comedy fan knows, even the dumbest jokes — the one’s that can only be enjoyed while baked — don’t just appear out of smoke-filled air. “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie,” a new documentary chronicling the eponymous duo’s meteoric rise in the 1970s, emphasizes the sheer amount of work and determination it took to become one of America’s most popular comedy acts. Long before Seth Rogen was born, Cheech and Chong were the hardest-working potheads in Hollywood, even if they played exaggerated burnouts on screen and stage.
Alas, every success story comes with its fair share of complications. “Last Movie” also explores the financial headaches and managerial difficulties Cheech and Chong weathered at the height of their success, as well as the creative differences that ultimately drove the two men apart.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong first established their "wastoid" characters while working together in a Canadian improv troupe in the late 1960s. They first found success performing as "Cheech & Chong" as the opener for a touring bad. The story goes that Cheech & Chong were so funny, the band never came on stage. They began releasing their best bits on comedy albums starting with 1971's "Cheech and Chong," a must-have for comedy record collectors. Their bits were played by hip DJs, and they appeared regularly on "The Dr. Demento Show."
Their success was helped by a growing drug culture in the early 1970s. Cheech & Chong were stoners through and through, and their jokes hit harder for those who were under the influence. Those who are inexperienced with marijuana may not find Cheech & Chong terribly funny. The stoner shtick has continued to the present day, and now Marin and Chong have...

“Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

Cheech and Chong's impact on the stoner comedy genre is undeniable, with Up in Smoke being a groundbreaking film that set the bar high for future similar comedies. Cheech and Chong's Animated Movie is a regrettable addition to their filmography, lacking humor, charm, and quality animation. Comedy duos have a long history in entertainment, with vaudeville theater being the birthplace of this comedic dynamic. Some duos work by highlighting the differences between the two actors, while others back each other up in increasingly bizarre situations. The most classic form of a comedy duo involves a "straight man" who feeds lines to the "funny man," but there are plenty of hilarious ways to break away from this framework.

Canadian actor, comedian, and activist Tommy Chong is best known for his string of marijuana-themed Cheech and Chong movies with Los Angeles actor, comedian, and activist Cheech Marin. While Chong has gone on to enjoy a fruitful acting career, appearing in thirty-plus films since 1978, the Up in Smoke actor’s eldest daughter Rae Dawn Chong, might not be as recognizable as her father. Although not the most famous actress in the entertainment industry, Chong has worked hard to solidify herself as a skilled actress with minimal involvement from her more popular father.
After Chong enjoyed a successful career throughout the 1980s, her star gradually faded in the 1990s and continued to do so well into the new millennium. As many familiar with Hollywood and its politics know, it is difficult for people to start a career in the entertainment industry, and this is especially true for women and people of color.

Ah, 1978. It was the year that Slashfilm writer Lee Adams entered the world, and two movies changed the course of comedy forever (those landmarks are unrelated; I'm not trying to claim any credit). Those movies were "National Lampoon's Animal House" and Cheech and Chong's "Up in Smoke" — two lowbrow hits whose influences are still felt to this day.
There was lowbrow stuff before 1978, of course. Slapstick — the age-old art of falling over, breaking things, and hitting people — was still doing the rounds in the increasingly weary adventures of Inspector Clouseau. But the class of '78 was different: wild, irreverent, raucous, bawdy, subversive, counterculture comedy that delighted the kids and antagonized the squares.

Cheech & Chong will be reuniting onscreen for a new biopic for the first time since the height of their popularity in the mid-1980s. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong first came onto the scene in the 1970s with their standup comedy routines and albums that focused on counterculture, stoner culture, and the hippie and free love era they grew up in. Their success also led to several feature films, including their theatrical debut in 1978's Up In Smoke, which was a massive success, bringing in over $100 million on a $2 million budget.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the legendary comedy duo released a joint statement announcing the development of the film, which will be directed by Kristian Mercado, who recently released his own debut feature, the Anthony Mackie-led If You Were The Last. Stoners and comedy fans everywhere have reason to rejoice: a Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong biopic is on the way.
Written by Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan (who both wrote for Comedy Central’s 2020 reboot of The Ren & Stimpy Show) and directed by Kristian Mercado, the film will follow the comedic duo’s origins through a “never-before-seen” lens, showing their rise from obscurity to stardom. The release date of the film is still unknown, but many feel it’s high time the duo gets their due big-screen recognition.
“We are excited to show the world how two dudes from completely different backgrounds got together, changed comedy, and made cannabis mainstream!” Cheech and Chong said in a joint statement (pun intended).
Both Marin and Chong will have executive producer credits on the project. The beloved cult-icons partnered with Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures after the production company acquired the rights to the yet-to-be-named flick.

Hey, Dave’s not here, man.
Who is here, though, is Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures as he partners with Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, and Underground as well as Five All in the Fifth Entertainment for a planned biopic of the comedy team, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cheech and Chong are the comic duo who brought the stoners to the mainstream with their 1978 movie, Up in Smoke. They gained popularity with their uncensored and counterculture comedy and followed that movie with Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie in 1980 and Nice Dreams in 1981.
The biopic is set to have Kristian Mercado at the helm as director. Mercado is no stranger to making comedies, having directed specials for comedians Michael Che, Hannibal Burress, Ilana Glazer, and more. He recently made his feature film debut with his film If You Were Last, starring Anthony Mackie and Missi Pyle, which screened at SXSW this year.

The origin story of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the pioneering comedians whose 1978 film Up in Smoke has transcended cult status, is getting its own big screen treatment.
Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures is partnering with Marin and Chong, Underground, and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment on a feature biopic about the comedy duo.
Cheech and Chong came to prominence in the ’70s and ’80s, becoming synonymous with stoner culture by riffing on and lifting up the counterculture of the time, from hippies to (of course) cannabis. Their combined output included successful stand-up shows, comedy albums, and low-budget feature films, including Up in Smoke, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie (1980) and Nice Dreams (1981).
Kristian Mercado, who most recently made his feature debut with the 2023 South by Southwest entry If You Were Last, will direct from a screenplay by Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan.

Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from this week's episode of East New York. The CBS police procedural series follows a group of detectives and police officers who work in a particularly dangerous and crime-filled precinct in New York. The recently promoted deputy inspector Regina Haywood has her work cut out for her every week, but thankfully she has an incredible team behind her.
East New York, which was created by Mike Flynn and William Finkelstein, boasts a strong cast who shine alongside Warren. Jimmy Smits, who is no stranger to cop shows thanks to his work on NYPD Blue and LA Law, plays Haywood's mentor Chief John Suarez. Elizabeth Rodriguez (Miami Vice) plays Detective Crystal Morales, while Kevin Rankin takes on the role of Tommy Killian, whose approach to policing is rather old school. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Richard King, Lavel Schley, and Olivia Luccardi also star.

Well, this is bound to be a hot topic at the next Reagan family dinner!
Just kidding — CBS’ Blue Bloods exists in a different NYPD Cinematic Universe than CBS’ East New York. Still, it is very fun to think about Jimmy Smits’ Chief John Suarez angling (or not!) to take unseat Tom Selleck’s commish at 1Pp, as suggested by the exclusive East New York sneak peek above.
