The rest is a laugh riot; but a touchingly well meaning one. You can now find this film on a "Goodtimes" video release with the watershead dino/kids flick "Journey To The Beginning Of Time" on a double bill. If you dig dinos and the seventies, you could hardly do better.
Ctomvelu1 -- Jim Danforth painted mattes but the animation was performed by the others listed in the credits, Steve Cerzkas and Doug Beswick. I invite anyone who enjoys stop motion to visit the Facebook group Stop Motion Monsterland, where pros and fans both hang out to discuss this unique art form. Also on FB are The Ray Harryhausen Appreciation Society, The Fantastic World of Ray Harryhausen and When Jim Danforth Ruled the Earth. The same people cross over these groups with daily frequency.
Ah the 1970's where every man had a beard or mustache, space uniforms were tight polyester and Rule #1 was no one could look look dirty despite falling, running, etc.
I'm guessing they filmed the movie in days without ever doing a retake or, at the very least, only 1 retake was allowed per shot. Good enough was the mantra.
The Dinosaur stop motion was passable given the budget and direction.
Honestly this moving screams TV movie w/o any of the B or C List actors involved. Maybe the guy who was stoned when coming up with this movie had the right idea, watch with "help"
The only saving grace of the film is Harvey Shain's performance. His wisecracks are second to none, and he seems to be the only one that realizes what a piece of crap he is appearing in, and therefore doesn't take it seriously. He also has the funniest death scene ever recorded on film.
The only reason I would recommend this movie is for a good laugh.

- TriviaOn 6/24/2011 the Portland (OR) composers and musicians collective Filmusik gave this film its full treatment, screening it at the Hollywood Theater in Portland with the sound turned off, while the local progressive jazz band Blue Cranes performed a new, original musical soundtrack live, and voice actors from the Willamette Radio Workshop recreated the dialogue with live Foley. [Jim Aupperle], co-writer, associate producer and head of special visual effects for the original film, was on hand for the show and said later " . . . I don't think I ever enjoyed our film as much as I did that evening."
- GoofsA character in the film says he has to get back to work setting up some reflectors so they can send out a signal. Reflectors cannot send a signal; all they can do is reflect, hence the name.
- Quotes
Capt. Lee Norsythe: I'll need two volunteers to see what's up there.
Nyla: I'll go.
Capt. Lee Norsythe: Good, take Mr. Baylor with you.
Harvey: I thought this was volunteer work.
Capt. Lee Norsythe: You haven't been carrying any heavy equipment, Mr. Baylor. You look fairly well rested.
Harvey: Well, doesn't being a vice president pull any weight around here?
Nyla: Of course, Mr. Baylor. I mean, you get to walk on the shady side!
Harvey: I suppose rank has its privileges. This is one of the rankest privileges I've ever encountered.
- Alternate versionsIn 2010, Rifftrax released 'Rifftrax: Planet of Dinosaurs'. The Rifftrax version had only minor differences from the original release with the exception of comedic commentary played over the movie's audio track.
