Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Miklós Jancsó's The Red and the White (1967) will be showing January 21 - February 20, 2017 in the United States. The opening shot of The Red and the White shows armed riders on horseback rushing gallantly toward the camera in slow motion. It is the type of heroic imagery one associates with a valiant depiction of soldiers heading off to battle, to fight the good fight for a lofty cause. But in this outstanding 1967 film from Miklós Jancsó, one of the great anti-war testaments, such iconic and potentially promotional action is never to be seen again. In its place are the callous and violent vagaries of cold barbarity, overzealously arbitrary authority, and the unremitting movement of people, sometimes strategically, sometimes on an apparently random whim. Made during a politically pivotal and formally transitory period in Jancsó’s career, The Red and the White...

This past week the battle rounds for season 10 of “The Voice” came to an end, with coaches Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Pharrell Williams, and Adam Levine each securing eight artists to advance to the knockouts. Those episodes will start airing Monday on NBC. Looking for his fourth victory as a coach, Levine has struggled to get the artists he wanted on his team during the blind auditions and appears vulnerable this time around. Does he still have a shot to lead someone to the title? Or is he headed for defeat? Here is a look at how I rank his remaining artists’ chances to go all the way. Take our poll at the bottom of this article to let us know your top choice. -Break- Related: Who is your least favorite 'The Voice' coach of all time? 1. The adage "sex, drugs and rock & roll" can best be used describe the music scene in the Seventies, an era where all genres were fueled by everything from alcohol and marijuana to cocaine and Quaaludes. The third installment of 1973: Shaping the Culture, a new video series from Rolling Stone presented by HBO's new show Vinyl, delves into the influence – both creative and destructive – drugs had on the music scene.
"Music is affected by the drugs you take, which is completely accurate," journalist Legs McNeil says. "When you're taking cocaine and drinking,...

Film director who used powerful symbolism to depict the fight for Hungarian socialism and independence
At the 1966 Cannes film festival, a movie whose title sounded like a western – but was actually Hungarian – caused a sensation and launched its director into the international cinematic scene, where he was to remain for a decade. The film of hypnotic beauty and daring technique was The Round-Up (Szegénylegények, literally translated as The Outlaws) and the director was Miklós Jancsó, who has died aged 92.
Jancsó's highly personal style had blossomed in this, his fifth feature. The Round-Up is set on a bleak Hungarian plain in 1868, when Austro‑Hungarian troops tried to break the unity of the Hungarian partisans by torture, interrogations and killings. There is little dialogue as horsemen drive the people to and fro, with power continually changing hands. Jancsó's ritualistic style manages to make the particular Hungarian situation into a universal parable of evil,...

As The Onion has pointed out, full-episode parodies of movies can be a sure sign that a TV show is running out of steam and ideas. And, historically, they're right. (See: Almost any '90s comedy series that ever did a Halloween episode homage to cheesy horror movies.)
But there are a select few shows that have consistently brought the goods when it comes to film satire, using movie plots as a springboard to create something special with their own characters instead of just covering for a lack of originality with 23 minutes of "Hey, look at us making references to this thing you loved!"
Here are the nine shows that have paid tribute to movies with outstanding results.
9. 'Family Guy': 'Laugh It Up Fuzzball: The Family Guy Trilogy' ('Star Wars')

CBS has earned a reputation for rarely shaking up its steadfast formula (easy to follow procedurals, simple three-camera sitcoms, Survivor), but it’s now putting into development one hell of a head-scratcher. Deadline reports that the network is developing a medical drama called Dorothy, which will “lift characters and themes” from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Described as a medical soap, the project comes from Elementary producers Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman and takes place in New York City. Emily Fox (Ghost Whisperer) will write the script and executive produce the pilot. I’m morbidly curious to see just how Beverly and Timberman plan to make this work. Scrubs did an excellent Wizard of Oz homage in the Zach Braff-directed episode “My Way Home,” but it seems like the adaptation works better within the comedy genre. How clear will the parallels to the source material be?...

Zach Braff is in final talks to join Oz: The Great and Powerful, Disney's re-imagining of/prequel to The Wizard of Oz. James Franco stars as "a charismatic circus magician who is treated as a powerful wizard after his balloon blows off course into Oz and the townsfolk want him to eradicate a Wicked Witch and bring peace." According to Deadline, Braff will play Frank, the wizard's loyal but under-appreciated assistant. Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Rachel Weisz play three witches. The 3D production begins begin this July in Michigan under the direction of Sam Raimi. Oz: The Great and Powerful is scheduled for release on March 8, 2013. The Scrubs fans out there may remember Braff directed "My Way Home," the series' 100th episode and homage to The Wizard of Oz. Watch a clip from the episode after the break. This week on Private Practice, Addison came to a surprising realization, Pete confronted his family's checkered past, and Charlotte finally came face-to-face with her attacker.
"Can't Find My Way Home" was loaded with emotional scenes and heavy stories, even relegating the rape story line to the back burner at times, which was no small feat.
To say Pete comes from a troubled background is an understatement. His brother, Adam (Kyle Secor), shows up to say their jailed mom Frances (Louise Fletcher) is dying.
Violet tries to help Pete confront another impossible situation.
The goal, if Pete can find it within himself, is to win Frances a humanitarian release. He agrees to "spin" her condition so she'll get it, and Sam agrees to lend his name to the effort.
Funny thing, though. Just as he's convinced himself this is the right thing to do, Pete realizes that his mom really hasn't changed,...

Profound Desires Of The Gods
Eureka, Blu-Ray
With most films you can guess when they were made, to within five years, just by looking at them. Some films, however, are so locked into their own little world, so perfectly and unwaveringly delivered, that you'd be hard-pressed to date them with any accuracy. This near-forgotten classic from Shohei Imamura (better known for Pigs & Battleships and the incredible 1979 serial killer film Vengeance Is Mine) slides easily into the latter category. Released to mass bafflement and public indifference in 1968 after an indulgent 18-month production schedule, it looks and feels as if it could have been made any time within the past five decades. Set on a fictional island near Okinawa, the tale concerns a Tokyo engineer sent to oversee the construction of a well for a sugar mill. His encounters with a shamed local family provide a story that touches on both farce and allegory.
