Glowering from atop his mountainous cheekbones, Mads Mikkelsen cuts a hard, intimidating figure in the The Promised Land. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel from a screenplay co-written by the prolific Anders Thomas Jensen, the film casts Mikkelsen as real-life 18-century war veteran Ludvig Kahlen, a proud man of humble origins who hopes to establish the first viable homestead in Denmark’s Jutland heath. Many others have tried to cultivate the barren lowland in the name of the king, but none have succeeded. “The world’s asshole,” one man calls this no man’s land roamed by outlaws and outcasts. One look into Kahlen’s eyes is to know that he’ll succeed at transforming the heath into farmable land.
In large part for the way it paints morality in black and white, The Promised Land is an old-fashioned western, and what it lacks in nuance it more than makes up for in showmanship.

“The Promised Land” deserves a sexier title than “The Promised Land”: It’s hard to hear those well-worn words and not expect something as beige and starchy as the spuds grown on its titular terrain. It has one, in fact. The native Danish title for Nikolaj Arcel’s film translates as “The Bastard” — which has the advantage of applying, in different senses, to both its male principals, and rather better captures the spirit of this lavishly upholstered historical romp, which may pose nobly at points, but gradually reveals a heart of pure boys’-own hokum. Notionally rooted in historical fact, but embellished with storybook romance and flouncing cartoon villainy, this roundly enjoyable Venice competition entry finally owes all its residual gravitas (and at least half its considerable handsomeness) to the expressive woodcut visage of one Mads Mikkelsen.

As the old adage goes, when one door closes, another opens. Gwyneth Paltrow can attest to that (for any kids in the audience, we’re referring to 1998 rom-com Sliding Doors). As can Amanda Collin.
The Danish actress was in South Africa shooting the second season of HBO Max’s Ridley Scott-produced sci-fi Raised By Wolves (she played the lead, the war android Mother) when she was first contacted about Nikolaj Arcel’s The Promised Land, screening in both Venice and Toronto. Arcel, as it happens, had written the screenplay to her first feature, 2016 crime thriller A Conspiracy of Faith. “I was in my trailer in my latex suit and Nikolaj called me up about this period drama. I was like, I’m in,” Collin explains.
The second season of Raised By Wolves would ultimately be its last, the show — despite critical acclaim and a growing following (and a few...

Mads Mikkelsen, best known for playing unconventional, creepy villains, has revealed in a GQ interview that he would rather play a “loser” instead of a hunky sex symbol of a leading character.
“To combine it — to do something real and also be a cutie pie — I don’t really find it interesting,” Mikkelsen said in the interview. “I’m not into the ‘hair falling in your eyes, be cute in a corner.’ Not me. The losers are fun. Because we know them. You might have been in that situation yourself sometimes.”
The actor, who prefers the natural Meisner approach to acting over the “pretentious” “bullshit” of Method acting, has played a James Dean-esque heartthrob many times in recent years, which has drawn a niche following in America, as GQ pointed out. “I am a niche bad guy,” Mikkelsen responded. “I didn’t know there was that part also.”

When I saw the title Ravenstein my first thought was I’d found an Edm mad scientist film, Ravers meets Depraved if you will. Then I saw the synopsis and the director. A film about two friends who run afoul of a birdman in an abandoned factory, directed by Eveshka Ghost who gave us the three-hour, no-budget fantasy The Bastard Sword? And it’s free on Tubi? How could I not watch it?
David (James McClusky; The Bastard Sword) and Marky (Nik Kaneti-Dimmer; The Granary) are riding their bikes one night when they notice part of the fence around an old worksite has fallen over, with nothing better to do they decide to go exploring. They find an abandoned glass factory and some terrible jokes. “My dad used to work in glass.
