Star Trek has been with us for over 50 years in one form or another. It started in 1964 with the filming of the pilot episode of the original series, and it has continued to the present day, through films and subsequent TV series, along with other mediums such as books and video games.

We’re principally interested in the core of the franchise here, the TV series and films, and we’re going to take a look at some 'what if...' possibilities of projects that almost happened but didn’t. If you’re reading...

Ralph McQuarrie Documentary: The Artist Behind The Magical Visuals Of Star Wars
Artist Ralph McQuarrie‘s concept art was a huge influence on most of our childhoods – Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, E.T. would not look the way they did if it had not been for McQuarrie’s illustrations during the development phase. While McQuarrie died a few years back, his work is still a huge influence on the […]

Crowdfunding Friday: The Art Of Ralph McQuarrie
A Kickstarter campaign aims to fund a book devoted to Ralph McQuarrie, the artist who first brought the Star Wars universe to life...

Feature

Next December, Star Wars: Episode VII will bring one of the most loved and lucrative franchises back to our screens. But it's worth remembering that, although Star Wars is now a colossally successful property worth millions, its path to the silver screen was by no means an easy one.

In the mid-1970s, George Lucas was still a young filmmaker with two successful but modestly-budgeted movies under his belt. Lucas' idea for his third film was a sci-fi fantasy so outlandish, and so potentially expensive to make that studio executives all over Hollywood simply couldn't see the value in it. Pitches to United Artists and Universal Pictures came to nothing, as Lucas struggled to describe the film he'd hatched in his head.

Determined to show...

Gerry Anderson’s Gemini Force 1 Heads to Kickstarter
Based on concepts and story written by Gerry Anderson, a new adventure series from the creator of Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 will be funded by his fans via a Kickstarter campaign starting September 5th.

Gemini Force One (or GF1) is, as the Anderson Estate describes it, “the story of a secret organization involved in rescues and averting disasters and terrorist events”. Gerry began work on it back in 2008, but was unable to complete development due to his advancing Alzheimer’s Disease, which led to his passing at the end of last year.

The project has been planned as a series of adventure novels, the first of which will be completed by best-selling author Mg Harris, writer of The Joshua Files, under the guidance of Gerry’s son Jamie, who is spearheading the project. Harris has experience with popular science fiction series; she’s just recently completed a new Blake’s 7 adventure for Big Finish Productions.

Sci-fi TV

Tonight’s genre selection is, well, just one new show: Ghost Hunters International (“Witches’ Castle” in Austria, Syfy, 9 p.m.). It’s sandwiched between Ghost Hunters reruns. And tomorrow night offers two reruns on the CW: Smallville (“Requiem” with an injured Oliver Queen, 8 p.m.) and Supernatural (“Family Remains,” 9 p.m.).

Spike is going to rebroadcast NBC’s The Storm and Meteor mini-series next month. Note: NBC only debuts The Storm Part 2 (pictured) this Sunday. These Spike runs are part of a promo attempt to herald the cable network’s new TV series, Surviving The Disaster (which premieres in September). Thus, Spike is ballyhooing one disaster with two others (so far).

Heroes will have a two-hour, fourth season premiere September 21 on NBC. Robert Knepper (Prison Break) is joining the cast as a regular.

Did we mention Flashforward flashes into existence on ABC September 24?

Meanwhile,...

Star Wars Artist's Battlestar Galactica
Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie's original Battlestar Galactica artwork has gone online and you can see it by hitting the gallery to your right. The painted pictures are a mix of stuff that made it into the show - Colonial Vipers, blokes with beards sitting around a bar - and some stuff that didn't (we love the black Cylons). But all of it's gorgeous. Hit the gallery to your right to pick your favourite pics / spot the shots that appear to be traces from old Star Wars art McQuarrie must have had lying around the... .
