It could be better

Ordinary political thriller. Swedish representative is sent to an imaginary country in South America where a revolution is erupting. His assignment: to organize and mediate a conference between the government and the revolutionaries. Reading it doesn't seem bad, but watching... things just don't work, it is boring most time. Non-charismatic Thomas Hellberg plays an unsympathetic role, a "perfect" match for the hero. And the good supporting cast can't help. A Swedish production, oddly shot in Portugal, aiming the international market.

The novel's author Per Wahlöö and his 13-year de facto wife Maj Sjöwall wrote in collaborative work ten successful crime novels based on a detective, in the 1960s and 1970s. Several of those novels dealt with crimes in Latin America's republics that were under military dictatorships. It got the Swedish public interest, and subsequent acclaim, of the movie. The attribution of The Swedish Film Institute's Quality Grant (1978) to the movie, also called the attention of international markets to it.

Goofs
Frankenheimer introduces Miguel Lopez to Dalgren in the South Province town, but Dalgren had met Lopez in the country capital, the day before.
