For a certain type of film fanatic, who also happens to be a physical media enthusiast, this is the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, Barnes & Noble’s 50% off Criterion Collection sale is upon us. This biannual tradition (the next sale happens in November) is the perfect opportunity to splurge on some of the very best home video releases around – for half the price, no less.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Criterion Collection, they started off as a laserdisc company, at the time known for their impeccable taste and commitment to extensive special features and commentary tracks, years before DVDs would make supplemental material commonplace. As the company continued to DVD, Blu-ray and now 4K Uhd discs, the principals that made them so special in the first place have remained. Every Criterion release is an event. And the Barnes & Noble sales are an essential part of the Criterion experience.

This article contains spoilers for the "Ironheart" season 1 finale.
"Ironheart" might have taken off as quickly as it arrived, but not before dropping a credits scene in its final episode. Hopefully continuing the trend that "Thunderbolts*" managed to recapture by delivering a post-credits scene that actually means something, Riri Williams' (Dominique Thorne) adventure ends with a struggling villain trying to get back to his former glory and visiting a mutual associate of Ironheart that could play a bigger part in the future of the MCU, and specifically for one A-list hero.
After being cut loose from the long-awaited villain Mephisto (Sacha Baron Cohen), Parker Robbins, aka The Hood (Anthony Ramos), is now a lone agent, since the team he gathered is scattered to the winds. On a mission to reclaim his former title and take hold of the power he once had, Robbins tracks down the Stantons' store, fully aware...

However, heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe aren't the only ones that are about to steal the spotlight. Much to fans' surprise, variants of the X-Men from the Fox universe will also join the fight against Victor Von Doom (which was a long time coming).

Pioneering Hollywood movie marketing strategist Allan Freeman has died. He was 88.
Freeman died on June 7 due to unspecified causes, former friend and colleague Martin Lewis, a movie and music marketing strategist who worked as a consultant with Freeman on United Artists projects, told The Hollywood Reporter. Sid Ganis, a former president of Paramount, chairman of Columbia, Lucasfilm exec and president of the Motion Picture Academy, in a statement praised his former colleague and friend.
“Allan Freeman was a pioneer. Someone had to invent research for movies and Allan was the one!” Ganis said. Freeman, who worked behind the Hollywood curtain on film releases for Superman, Star Wars and Rain Man, as an early research director at Warner Bros. introduced film title testing and research strategies to ensure a tentpole release better hit with audiences in theaters by avoiding pre-release confusion about a film’s plot or characters.

With the death of director William Friedkin sending shockwaves through the film world, as everyone pays tribute to his classics The French Connection and The Exorcist, now is a good time to look back at one of his most underrated movies, the 1977 classic action thriller Sorcerer!
The 1970s were probably the last decade when the film industry had many honest-to-goodness auteurs. Directors who made movies on their own terms without compromises; not just the ones making little indie art films, but the guys in charge of sizable projects with the backing of major studios. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Brian De Palma came of age during this era, and were responsible for movies that would resonate for decades. Another name you can add to that list is William Friedkin, who during that period made two instant classics and one misunderstood masterpiece.

It was a party was Netflix Tudum Live 2025, but that is what we expected. We wanted to see the casts of our favorite shows, such as Squid Game, Wednesday, and Stranger Things, and we did. We also wanted to know about release dates, and we got several.
You might have already known through all the rumors about Stranger Things that the final season was going to be split into two (it turned out to be three...sort of), but we didn't know when part one of that would start. The assumption is that part two would come about a month after that.
We knew from an interview Finn Wolfhard conducted with People that filming for the final season had been completed and the cast had said their goodbyes. The only thing left was post-production and editing. As the Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy are still involved, that should have been easy.

The news was announced at Netflix’s Tudum fan event at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles Saturday, with stars Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp running through some look-back clips before revealing the dates for season five via a teaser (watch it below).
Back in January, Ross Duffer said about the final episodes, “We spent a full year filming this season. By the end, we’d captured over 650 hours of footage. So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s pretty insane.

As IndieWire wraps up our Cannes Film Festival coverage — see our favorite films of the festival here and our annual critics survey here — so does the Screen Talk podcast. This week, hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio debate the late-breaking premieres like “The History of Sound” and “The Mastermind,” finally get a chance to gush over “Sentimental Value,” and speculate on what countries might submit Cannes premieres for the International Feature Oscar.
Since Iran will never submit its dissident director Jafar Panahi, who’s back in his home country post-Cannes despite legal battles and decades of censorship attempts by the Islamic Republic, for Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident,” we’re going with Luxembourg as the country to pick this film for the Oscars. Both France and Luxembourg have production stakes in the film, though France will have plenty of other contenders to work with.

Iron Man: Something Strange!
By Dean Hale and Douglas Holgate
Abrams Fanfare/96 pages/12.99
After three team-up books featuring Spider-Man, the young reader line shines the spotlight on Iron Man and Doctor Strange, and it’s a fun time. Aimed at 5-9-year-old readers, the book ostensibly is about an alien infestation that comes to shellhead’s attention when the Avengers’ communication system fails. It turns out the ten little creatures are the offspring of an interdimensional creature who is none-too-happy to be on Iron Man’s plane of existence.
When the Golden Avenger runs out of science-based options, he takes Thor’s advice and seeks supernatural help from the Master of the Mystic Arts. Here’s where the real theme emerges: science versus magic becomes a running gag between the two heroes. With just an hour to collect the children of Great Gargantos, Scourge of the Outer Planes, Tonty Stark...

For the French-Spanish filmmaker Oliver Laxe, a competition berth in Cannes has been a long time coming. Laxe was here in 2010 (You All Are Captains), 2016 (Mimosas), and 2019 (Fire Will Come) without once going home empty-handed, and he now rises to the occasion with Sirat, his grandest, most adventurous work yet: the kind of bold, auteurist arrival that seems to happen more here than any other festival. The story takes place in Morocco, which provided the backdrop of Laxe’s first two films, and follows a father searching for his daughter amidst the dust and drugs of an illegal rave scene in and around the Atlas Mountains. There’s a delicious touch of Paul Schrader’s Hardcore to that setup, but Sirat is more in the lineage of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer, even Mad Max: a story about a ragtag group attempting to move some monstrous vehicles over a landscape...

From a solitary photographer capturing desert rock formations to abandoned movie theaters housing unexpected evils, Joshua Erkman’s directorial debut “A Desert” is consistently preoccupied with images and the people who devote their lives to making them. A nightmarish road trip film that wears its Hitchcock influences on its sleeve, the film follows a once-acclaimed photographer (Kai Lennox) who tries to manufacture a spark of creativity by driving through the American Southwest without a cell phone to comb through the scenery that used to inspire him so much.
The film, which premiered at Tribeca in 2024 and opens in theaters this weekend, feels like the launch of a promising new genre filmmaker. Erkman’s road to his directorial debut was a long one, as he spent much of his previous career working on restorations of classic films. The director explained that this project was a direct result of a life that...

Stars: Megan Tremethick, Andrew Gourlay, Dorian Todd, Michael Daviot | Written by Lawrie Brewster, Sarah Daly | Directed by Richard Campbell
Crown of Shadows, also know as The Reign of Queen Ginnarra (the title under which it played film festivals), is a dark, Gothic medieval horror film from director Lawrie Brewster – credited on the DVD from High Fliers as Richard Campbell – and writer Sarah Daly who’ve previously worked together on other Hex Studios productions such as Lord of Tears, The Devil’s Machine, Dragon Knight and The Slave and the Sorcerer.
This latest effort comes from the companies new “strand”, Hex Elder Myths and combines both Brewster and Daly’s past experience in both horror and and action, taking tropes and stereotypes from both genres, fusing medieval fantasy with Lovercraftian horror to deliver what is a sword and sorcery epic. And I don’t use the word epic lightly, because this film runs a whopping 142 minutes!

Marvel Studios ratcheted up excitement for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday by unveiling its cast on its official YouTube account. The includes MCU mainstays such as Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth, as well as debutants like the Fantastic Four's Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby.
Marvel is also bringing back many fan-favorite Fox X-Men characters, members of the Thunderbolts, and a Wakandan contingent. However, many fans lamented the conspicuous absence of other characters, like Tom Holland's Spider-Man, Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Stephen Strange, and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. Their worry about these absences may be premature because the studio has teased the inclusion of even more characters as the Russo brothers-helmed behemoth swings into production. In an Instagram exchange, Doctor Doom actor Downey posted, "That's what u call a deep bench of talent. It's more like a row, but an extra-long one. That must be it, right?" regarding the revealed cast.

The Criterion Collection has unveiled their June 2025 releases, and it is an absolutely stacked one, with unnerving suspense, bureaucratic domination and whatever Sidney Lumet was going for with The Wiz.
One of the most anticipated releases in Criterion’s June slate is William Friedkin’s Sorcerer, a stellar remake of The Wages of Fear that flopped upon initial release but has since gone on to be considered one of the finest thrillers of the 1970s. Surprisingly, it is Friedkin’s first film ever in The Criterion Collection. The release, set as spine #1267, has a new 4K digital restoration, and has special features that include a feature-length documentary on Friedkin from 2018, numerous archival interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and more. Sorcerer arrives on June 24th.

What does the Criterion Collection have in store for home video enthusiasts this June? The boutique label just announced their new releases for that month today, with five new movies entering the Collection. Leading the pack? A Sidney Lumet musical and one of William Friedkin‘s tensest efforts, as well as a classic screwball comedy, a doc about one of jazz’s greatest pianists, and a boldly unconventional film biography.

Just when I thought I was out (of money), Criterion pulled me back in (with their June 2025 release slate). How about William Friedkin's awesome Sorcerer for starters? Plus Terry Gilliam's great Brazil. Plus Paul Schrader's Mishima. Plus four more movies that I have yet to memorize: Sidney Lumet's The Wiz, Charlotte Zwerin's Thelonius Monk Straight, No Chase, Mitchell Leisen's Midnight, and François Girard's Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould. Pardon me while I drop this mic. Hasten thee to the official Criterion site to deplete all your funds on future physical media....

I’ve still never seen The Wages of Fear (life moves fast and there’s books to read in-between all those films) but within days of Criterion’s 4K arriving at my door comes news that its little brother is next in line. William Friedkin’s Sorcerer lands on 4K this June, a month that sees two of its biggest titles (and best-looking packages) get the much-desired upgrade: Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil should look and (in the case of Philip Glass’ score for the former) sound better than ever.
Sidney Lumet’s The Wiz and François Girard’s Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould also arrive on the format; both are complemented by a Blu-ray of Charlotte Zwerin’s Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser. Meanwhile, Mitchell Leisen’s Midnight (starring Claudette Colbert and John Barrymore) earns the honorable silver prize of a Blu-ray.

“Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown wasn’t actually born with the middle name Bobby, she told Chris Pratt in an interview for BuzzFeed UK.

The Reign of Queen Ginnarra, set for a UK release later this year from High Fliers under the more generic title Crown of Shadows, is a dark, Gothic medieval horror film from director Lawrie Brewster and writer Sarah Daly who’ve previously worked together on other Hex Studios productions such as Lord of Tears, The Devil’s Machine, Dragon Knight and The Slave and the Sorcerer.

Eddie Murphy returned for another sketch on the SNL50: The Anniversary Show, this time as one of three prisoners trying to try to scare a trio of young male shoplifters “straight.”
The sketch was a spoof of the documentary Scared Straight, the program in which prisoners scream and yell at teens in an effort to get them to avoid a life of crime. It’s become an occasional SNL spoof over the years.
Of course, the prisoners in this sketch go a bit too far, concocting wild narratives before berating the young men, in an explicit and graphic terms, what awaits them behind bars.
Joining Murphy, as “All The Way” Ray May, were Kenan Thompson as Lorenzo McIntosh and Will Ferrell as Red, with Jason Sudeikis as the police officer who invites the inmates to give the youngsters a talkin’ to.

After the success of “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” William Friedkin became one of the most in-demand filmmakers in Hollywood. Having the option to choose his own projects, he opted to adapt Georges Arnaud’s 1950 novel “The Wages of Fear.” This was the second adaptation of the novel after Henri-Georges Clouzot’s critical darling of the same name, released in 1953, which won both the Golden Bear and the Palme d’Or. While Friedkin admired Clouzot’s work and even dedicated his film “Sorcerer” to Clouzot, the tone and treatment of his film were completely different from the earlier adaptation. In this article, I will discuss the two films and explore how despite being based on the same source material they became two distinct cinematic works.
