This is based on a sketch called "One Leg Too Few". It first appeared in a Pembroke college revue and later in a Footlights college revue. It appeared in Kenneth William's revue "One Over the Eight". It then became part of the Beyond the Fringe revue. It also appeared in their show "Behind the Fridge", "Saturday Night Life" and "The Secret Policeman's Biggest Ball". However in all these Mr Spigot auditions for the role of Tarzan, not for the post of a runner.
