We’re all still reeling from the death of Jonathan Demme, one of the most unpredictable, open-hearted and by all accounts best loved of American filmmakers. I was surprised to learn that he was 73 when he died because he, and his films, always seemed so youthful. The fact that his swansong was the beautifully exuberant Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids only added to that impression of vitality. Many of the posters for Demme’s films are as well known as the films themselves: the Dali-esque death’s head moth for Silence of the Lambs; the cutout of Spalding Gray’s head bobbing in a flat plane of blue for Swimming to Cambodia; an upside-down Jeff Daniels on Something Wild; Pablo Ferro’s Strangelove-esque titles over the Big Suit for Stop Making Sense. And of his later films I particularly like the screen-print look of Man From Plains. But the posters for Demme’s early films,...

New York City – He was the helmsman of “The Silence of the Lambs,” which won him Best Director and took home Best Picture at the 1992 Academy Awards, and made numerous other late 20th Century movie classics. Director Jonathan Demme died in New York City on April 26, 2017, at the age of 73.
Film writer Dave Kehr called Demme “the last of the great humanists,” and the director followed through on that description with an incredible run of films in the 1980s and ‘90s, which included “Melvin and Howard” (1980), “Something Wild” (1986), “Swimming to Cambodia” (1987), “Married to the Mob” (1988), “Lambs” (1991) and “Philadelphia” (1993). He also created one of the greatest rock documentaries ever, “Stop Making Sense” (1984, featuring the Talking Heads) and worked extensively with Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young on other rock docs. He even directed an episode of the TV classic “Columbo” in 1978, among his other TV achievements.

The late filmmaker Jonathan Demme, who died last night at the age of 73, will always be linked to Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. The two likeminded artists first worked together on the 1984 classic “Stop Making Sense,” a concert documentary that Byrne hired Demme to direct, and that collaboration forever transformed what the world thinks possible of such performance-driven films. More than that, the experience sparked a lifelong friendship, one that extended into several other projects and irrevocably deepened the relationship between music and movies.
This afternoon, Byrne wrote a loving remembrance of Demme on his website. We have reposted the full text of Byrne’s letter below.

The Vampire Diaries waves goodbye to one of its most irritating storylines. Here's Caroline's review of this week's episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.7 Death And The Maiden
It's only taken a season and a half(ish), but it seems we're finally done with the Silas/Amara/Katsia storyline! Well, we're done with the physical presence of those characters anyway, but I don't believe for a second that the Vampire Diaries writers are going to discard their carefully cultivated doppelgängers storyline quite that easily - that's just not their style. Was Katsia's final appearance a one off ghostly encounter, or can we expect to see her and Silas as ghosts appearing to a now-corporeal Bonnie?
I'm getting ahead of myself. Before we get to any suicides at all, we pick up with Silas as he waits for a bus, and there's nothing about Silas waiting...

Huge spoiler alert: some major s*** went down in Thursday (Nov. 14) night's all-new episode of "The Vampire Diaries." If you haven't watched yet, avert your eyes now. We warned you ...
In this week's "The Vampire Diaries," we had not one, not two, but all three doppelgangers in the same room at one time. And because of that, we also had not one, not two, but three major character deaths in "Death and the Maiden." So who bit the dust permanently, and who kind of came back from the dead -- but with dire consequences?
We started off the hour at some random bus stop in Philly where Silas is stranded. Since he was left in New Jersey after Amara drained him of the cure, he is making his way slowly back to Mystic Falls, and taking out all his anger on unsuspecting people in love. He's whiling away his time,...

The shocking reveals were a-plenty in last Thursday (Nov. 7) night's "The Vampire Diaries." Stefan got his memories back. Amara is the anchor for Tessa's spell keeping the Other Side intact. Amara's alive, and went straight for the cure even though it was running through Silas' veins. And all that was just in the last five minutes of the episode.
In the wake of all the dramatic game-changing events that went down in "Handle With Care," one huge fact wasn't made all that clear, and left viewers wondering: What on earth happened to Silas now that Amara drained him of the cure? Is he alive, dead, cured, mortal, immortal, or something else entirely?

The Vampire Diaries is becoming more Buffy-influenced by the minute. Here's Caroline's review of Handle With Care...
This review contains spoilers.
5.6 Handle With Care
I hope they’re paying Nina Dobrev a lot on this season of Vampire Diaries – not only is Katherine more of a presence than she’s ever been (arguably more than Elena right now) but now we have a third Doppelganger in the mix. Yes, Buffy fans, this show decided to make the anchor (aka Key) a person, not a thing, which begs the question – where’s Matt and what the heck is that knife? Handle With Care performed that charming trick of moving the story a couple of steps forwards just before taking it a step back but, with Amara making the Petrova Doppelganger count to three, I’m inclined not to care.
Katherine has her own stuff to deal with,...

Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
Turning Silas mortal at the end of last week, in true Vampire Diaries fashion, reconfigured the stakes once again. As he had gotten what he needed from Katherine, Silas’ fight with Qetsiyah over the purgatory for supernatural beings became the central conflict once again; this week’s episode turns the focus to the search for the anchor, in another strong entry into the season that fixes up a major issue.
One of the best aspects of the episode is the course correction it undergoes with regards to the female characters on the show. While the last few weeks have seen the women unfortunately be nothing more than puppets to the whims of the male characters, this week allows them to...

The Vampire Diaries Episode 506
“Handle With Care”
Written By: Caroline Dries and Holly Brix
Directed By: Jeffrey Hunt
Original Airdate: 7 November 2013
In This Episode...
Silas is now a witch and he is excited to die. He seems poised to keep his promise: he will bring Bonnie back before killing himself. Or as he kills himself - I don’t know how it works. But first he must find and destroy the anchor so that the supernatural purgatory falls. Naturally Tessa doesn’t want the anchor destroyed, and for the past 2000 years she has left it in the possession of the Travelers, who also don’t want Silas to be reunited with Amara. She won’t reveal why, but the Travelers keep the anchor moving and she doesn’t know where it is. Silas was able to get enough out of Tessa’s mind to know that the anchor is in a warehouse in New Jersey.

So full disclosure, "The Vampire Diaries" fans ... this week's recap won't be as detailed or in depth as it usually is.
This isn't because of laziness, or a remark on the episode -- "Handle With Care" actually packed a lot of wallops into one hour -- but actually a sign of really good things to come. You see, we're reporting to you live from Atlanta, Georgia, where we've been on the set of "The Vampire Diaries" for over 12 hours now. We've interviewed the stars, walked the sets, and collected all sort of juicy spoilers just for you. We even know some high level, top secret intel about the 100th episode ... but that is being kept under lock and key until we get a little closer to the air date.
We can reveal one huge spoiler that was teased for about 10 seconds during a commercial break during Thursday (Nov. 7) night's episode...

After last week's mother of a reveal that the mysterious Nadia was actually Katherine's long-lost biological daughter on "The Vampire Diaries," conspiracy theories, rants, and raves about the huge twist exploded on the internet.
Instead of theorizing and letting our imaginations run wild, Zap2it went straight to the prodigal daughter herself -- Olga Fonda -- to get some answers, and here is all the juicy scoop we could pry out of her in advance of Thursday (Nov. 7) night's all-new episode, "Handle With Care."
Zap2it: When you joined the cast of "Tvd," did you know your part was going to be this huge, integral role in the mythology?
Olga Fonda: I did not know. I was not aware of it. I had a few clues here and there. I knew that was Nadia was there for her own agenda that had to do with Katherine but I did...

On this week's The Vampire Diaries, will the plan for Bonnie to cross back over to the side of the living succeed? Silas has taken the cure, become a mortal witch, and is ready to die ... or so he says. When it comes to Silas, nothing should be taken at face value. On "Handle with Care," Silas will certainly add strings to the deal.

After Thursday (Oct. 31) night's shocking hour of "The Vampire Diaries," we need a quick rundown of everything that happened: Nadia is Katherine's daughter. Caroline and Tyler are officially over. Dr. Maxfield is studying vampires and is Aaron's legal guardian. Damon plans on working with Silas and using his death to bring Bonnie back from the dead. Tessa knows where the anchor is that is keeping the Other Side alive. Silas drank all of Katherine's blood and is now a mortal witch again. Katherine died ... but came back to life.
Whew, got all that? Good, because the action isn't slowing down in next week's episode, "Handle With Care."
Now that Silas is mortal again, he's eager to finally die ... but not until the Other Side is destroyed. Will Damon and Elena help him destroy the Other Side, and will Silas keep his promise to use his own death to bring Bonnie back from the dead?...

Of the two biggest franchise-launchers of 1977, one involved a pair of rebellious outlaws with a shaggy sidekick, a runaway heroine, a Mutt-and-Jeff pair of tall-short comic relief characters, epic-length chases, spectacular stunts, and endless vehicular mayhem. The other was "Star Wars." Yep, we're talkin' "Smokey and the Bandit," which opened 35 years ago this week (on May 27, 1977) and wound up grossing more money than any movie that year except for George Lucas' interstellar road adventure. It also launched a truckload of sequels on film and TV, gave Burt Reynolds his most iconic role, helped make movie stars out of country guitarist Jerry Reed and TV sitcom starlet Sally Field, provided a career comeback for Jackie Gleason, and sent Pontiac Trans Am sales soaring. Still, as popular as Reynolds and his muscle car were, there's plenty about "Smokey and the Bandit" that you may not know. Read on to learn Bandit's real name,...

Imposing character actor often cast in the films of Russ Meyer and Jonathan Demme
Charles Napier, who has died aged 75, was one of Hollywood's most distinctive and imposing character actors. With his blockish head, heavy jaw and formidable stare, he was called upon most often to play no-nonsense heavies. In a career lasting more than 40 years, he appeared in some of Hollywood's most successful films and television series, and was cherished in particular by the directors Russ Meyer and Jonathan Demme, who cast him repeatedly.

Fresh off of what is one of the biggest successes of his career, Tim Burton has found his next project in The Addams Family. The director will helm a stop-motion, 3D take on the property, and plans to harken back more to the tone of the original Charles Addams drawings than the TV show or live-action film adaptations did. And yes, Tim Burton doing stop-motion Addams Family sounds like a perfect fit, but we said the same thing before he made Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland, didn't we? The best (Traveling Wilburys, Dead Weather) have been great at times, but to say that they were ‘super,’ better than the bands from which they came, would be foolish. “Handle with Care” was good, but one of those Wilburys wrote Blonde on Blonde all by himself.
