Jimmy Carter, who followed a principled yet tumultuous single term in the White House with a post-presidency dedicated to human rights and peace advocacy, died this afternoon in his hometown Plains, Ga., The Carter Center said.

The nonprofit organization said there would be public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., as well as a private interment in Plains, Ga. The final arrangements of a state funeral are still pending.

Chip Carter, his son, said in a statement: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

Aside from his presidency during 1977 to 1981, the former president had many iconic pop cultural moments both before he became leader of the United States as well as during and after.

Carter shared moments with cultural figures like Andy Warhol, the Allman Brothers, Johnny Cash, Lucille Ball, Walter Cronkite and more. His real speech was featured at the beginning of 1978’s Americathon before a fictional mob attacks the White House and hangs Carter and his cabinet because of the energy crisis. The Bruce Willis movie The Last Boy Scout is based on Willis’ character being the Secret Service agent who saved Carter from a fictional assassination attempt, and there is an out of focus actor playing Carter in a flash back.

The news was confirmed by her family who wrote: “[Barrie] was the best of friends and had many loyal ones. Loved a good story and a nice bottle. Had a great laugh that confirmed her sense of life. Even during her decline, she could shoot off a good one liner.”

Barrie Youngfellow, who starred in the ’80s sitcom It’s a Living, died on Monday night, according to her family. She was 75. A cause of death was not disclosed.

“[Barrie] was the best of friends and had many loyal ones. Loved a good story and a nice bottle,” the family wrote. “Had a great laugh that confirmed her sense of life. Even during her decline, she could shoot off a good one liner.”

Youngfellow appeared in 120 episodes of It’s a Living between 1980 and 1989, with the series running on ABC for two seasons before airing in first-run syndication. The show followed a group of waitresses working at Above the Top, a fancy restaurant at the top of a skyscraper, with Youngfellow portraying waitress Jan Hoffmeyer Gray.

Hollywood screenwriter Guy Thomas died Friday at his home in Ventura County, Calif., of a suspected heart attack, his friend Gerri Malcolm confirmed to Variety. He was 66.

Thomas was best known for his screenplay of “The Magic of Belle Isle,” directed by Rob Reiner and starring Morgan Freeman as a struggling alcoholic writer and Virginia Madsen as his neighbor. His other screenplay credits include 1980’s “Wholly Moses!” and 2001’s “Chasing Destiny.”

Before his death, Thomas was working on an alt-history science fiction Western series, “Billy Stars,” with Oscar-nominated producer David Valdes.

Born in Bay Shore, N.Y., Thomas grew up in Georgia, where he first wrote for live theater and eventually for the screen. He sold his first screenplay, “Jungle Boy,” when he was 22. Director John Turteltaub, the youngest son of Saul confirmed that he died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills.

He received an Emmy nomination for The Carol Burnett Show in 1968 and earned back-to-back noms in 1964 and 1965 as part of the writing team for the U.S. version of the political satire TV series That Was the Week That Was.

Saul Turteltaub, the prolific writer and producer who worked on “The Carol Burnett Show,” “Sanford and Son,” “That Girl,” and “What’s Happening!!” died Thursday of natural causes. He was 87.

Director Howard Murray, who worked closely with Turteltaub, confirmed the news on social media. “Just heard that one of my favorite people on the planet has died. Saul Turtletaub along with his partner Bernie Orenstein created some of the funniest sitcoms ever to grace television,” he wrote. “But that’s only a small part of his legacy. Saul was by any measure, a mensch among mensches.”

During Turteltaub’s career, he garnered three Emmy nominations, including one for the first season of “The Carol Burnett Show,” which shot the comic into stardom. He was also responsible for jumpstarting the careers of countless actors including George Clooney, Richard Pryor, Dana Carvey, Nathan Lane, Garry Shandling and Meg Ryan.

After a successful time playing college football, Olsen began playing for the Los Angeles Rams in 1962 as part of the National Football League. He was one of the leading defensive players of his era and missed only two games in his 15 years with the NFL. Following his time on the field, Olsen went to work as a commentator for NBC throughout 1980s.
