Gozde Kural on Dark Fairytale ‘Cinema Jazireh,’ Rejected by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture – and the Power of ‘Titanic’
Image
Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism withdrew its support for Gözde Kural’s drama “Cinema Jazireh” after watching it.

“We fought this decision, but they rejected it. I couldn’t believe it. It’s not even about Turkey, but apparently there were still things they didn’t want to see,” the Turkish director tells Variety.

In the film – set in Afghanistan – after the massacre of her family in a Taliban raid Leyla’s trying to find her missing son. Fearing for her life, she disguises herself as a man. Soon, she meets another loner: a child, stuck in a place where boys have to dress as women. Just like Zabur, who also grew up this way.

“I was maybe 21 years old when I first landed in Afghanistan. I still remember the fear and the loneliness – it stayed with me for a long time. But this fear inspired me to create Leyla.

“Maggie Smith was a singular talent, whose artistry graced stages and screens alike with unmatched depth and wit,” said Robert E. Brother Marquis, 2 Live Crew Rapper, Dead at 58
Image
Brother Marquis, a member of the hip-hop group 2 Live Crew, has died at the age of 58.

2 Live Crew’s manager confirmed Brother Marquis’ death to TMZ on Monday, June 3rd. The cause of his death appears to be the result of natural causes, but details were not immediately known.

Born Mark Ross on April 4th, 1966, Marquis began rapping in his teenage years, eventually landing on the radar of 2 Live Crew’s Mr. Mixx in the ‘80s for his rap battle skills. After a position in the group opened, Mr. Mixx offered it to Marquis, who flew to Florida to join.

From there, the group — consisting of Mr. Mixx, Marquis, Fresh Kid Ice, and Uncle Luke (then known as Luke Skyywalker) — leaned into their humanistic sensibilities, and started gaining notoriety for raunchy, sexual songs, like “We Want Some Pussy” and “Throw the ‘D.’”

Ultimately, they came under national scrutiny with their third album,...

Frank Farian, Mastermind Behind Milli Vanilli, Dead at 82
Image
Frank Farian, the mastermind producer responsible for the groups Milli Vanilli, Boney M., La Bouche, and more, has died. He was 82 years old.

Over the course of his six-decade career, Farian saw considerable success as a songwriter and producer, but his time as the mastermind behind Milli Vanilli — and their infamous lip-syncing controversy — is likely what most remember him for. Farian first met the group’s frontmen, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, in Frankfurt, and signed a contract with them in January 1988, locking them into a deal.

Then, dissatisfied with the quality of the group’s vocal performances, Farian employed session vocalists — including Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, and others — to provide the lead vocal parts for the duo’s recordings, leading to an arrangement where Pilatus and Morvan, against their desires, lip-synced the parts that they claimed to be singing themselves.

Upon the release of Milli Vanilli’s biggest hit,...

Why Charlie Sheen’s Top Gun Ripoff Failed (Despite The Navy’s Backing)
Image
Top Gun's success was not easily replicated, as evidenced by the long delay in completing the sequel, and the many poorly received rip-offs that followed. The success of Top Gun was due to its thrilling adventure and fun factor, which critics complaining about cheesiness and lack of believability missed. Navy Seals, the Navy-approved knock-off of Top Gun, failed to replicate its charm, escapism, and fast-paced action, resulting in terrible reviews and being deemed the "poor man's Top Gun."

While Top Gun inadvertently improved the Navy’s recruitment rates, the institution’s attempt to cash in on this trend with a Charlie Sheen vehicle failed disastrously. Upon its release in 1986, Top Gun was a much bigger hit than anticipated. The movie launched its star, Tom Cruise, into the A-list, made Tony Scott a majorly in-demand action director, and resulted in Navy recruitment rates significantly increasing for a few years after its release.

Kevin Costner Took Out a Mortgage to Fund Horizon Film Series: 'I Did It Without a Thought'
Image
As reported by People, star Kevin Costner recently revealed during an interview that he took out a mortgage to fund the four-part movie series Horizon: An American Saga. While chatting with Deadline, the Yellowstone actor stated that he took out a mortgage on his 10-acre home in Santa Barbara, California, to cover expenses for part of the project's cost himself.

Costner said, "I've mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house. But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f------ conniption fit. But it's my life, and I believe in the idea and the story."

The star then added that he'd been working on various elements of the four-part Western series Horizon since 1988 but has since been having difficulties finding "anybody to make it."

Costner told Deadline, "At the end of the day, I'm a storyteller,...

Kevin Costner Tries To Hype New Western Movie But Yellowstone Fans Interrupt & Demand Answers
Image
Kevin Costner is bombarded by comments from angry Yellowstone fans while trying to hype his new movie Horizon. Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western drama Yellowstone became a massive hit for Paramount+ with Costner in the role of rancher John Dutton, but the run appears to be over as it was recently revealed that the star will not return after Yellowstone season 5. First rumblings of Costner’s potential departure from Yellowstone were indeed heard earlier this year when reports surfaced of behind-the-scenes conflict, as Costner continued work on his own epic Western project, the sprawling four-movie historical drama Horizon.

Production on Horizon is indeed ongoing, with the second film recently kicking off shooting, but when Costner took to Instagram to hype his return to epic Western filmmaking, all fans wanted to do was grill him about news of his departure after Yellowstone season 5.

The 5 worst and 5 best Oscars hosts of all time
Image
How do you follow an Oscars night like last year’s?

Amid all the unscripted Will Smith dramatics at the 2022 Academy Awards, it was easy to overlook the well-received performance from the ceremony’s three hosts: Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.

This year, producers will surely be hoping for a more subdued night, with Jimmy Kimmel set to compere the event.

It’s no wonder that finding the right person for the job has proven difficult in recent years.

Presenting the Oscars is a tricky thing; success as a comedian, as a TV presenter or as an actor in no way guarantees a successful turn at the ceremonies. And a bad host can tarnish the night, for viewers and for the Academy.

On the other hand, a great host can elevate an awards night beyond simply its winners and losers.

Frequent hosts Bob Hope and Billy Crystal became...

Thomas Haden Church, last seen reprising his role as Spider-Man villain Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has joined Kevin Costner in New Line and Warner Bros.’ Western movie, Horizon.

Church is saddling up with an all-star ensemble that already includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson and Stranger Things 4 breakout, Jamie Campbell Bower.

Costner is starring in the feature, as well as directing it and producing it via his banner, Territory Pictures. He also co-wrote the script with Jon Baird.

Horizon is being described as an epic saga that chronicles a 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. The roles are sprawling as the story seeks to tell, per the studio, a westward journey “fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land,...
