Now that Lorne Michaels has tapped Shane Gillis to host Saturday Night Live for a second time, can we declare the grand Gillis experiment over now? We’ve got a clear view of what Gillis the Cast Member would have looked like — a nondescript guy who struggles for a season before fading into an SNL trivia question.
This conclusion isn’t an indictment of Gillis the stand-up. Whether or not he’s your cup of Bud Light, his politically incorrect, Maga-friendly everyman appeal isn’t hard to understand. But that persona makes for forgettable sketch comedy characters, especially when the last two seasons have featured another comic with a clueless white guy vibe who does SNL so much better in Nate Bargatze. He has “Washington’s Dream,” “Lifeguard” and other memorable sketches under his belt. Gillis has had two 90-minute attempts to deliver a single killer sketch, and here we sit,...

Horsegirl are riding back into town in 2025. The indie trio announced today that their second LP, Phonetics On and On, will be released on Feb. 14, 2025, via Matador Records. This is terrific news for anyone who likes unusual guitar tones and sneakily catchy DIY songcraft.
Formed when singer-guitarists Penelope Lowenstein and Nora Cheng and drummer Gigi Reece were all in their teens, Horsegirl quickly emerged as one of the most notable acts in a thriving Chicago underground that also includes bands like Lifeguard, Friko, and Twin Coast. For me, one of the most surprising returns to X-Men lore is one of the most hated characters in recent memory. This is a character that I never thought Marvel would bring back, but I'm glad they are, as her powers make her the perfect response to almost every situation. While some fans may not be happy about it, it seems that Lifeguard is returning to front and center in the X-Men side of the Marvel Universe.
Marvel has recently announced that Lifeguard will be making a major return and heading up her own storyline in X-Men: From The Ashes Infinity Comic #19 by Alex Paknadel and Diogenes Neves. This story will follow why her powers have begun going out of control and causing harm to everyone around her. It'll be a major story that truly explores the depths of her powers and exactly how they work.

Sam Elliott's return to the Road House franchise in the confirmed sequel could be a major highlight for fans of the original film. The success of Road House 2 on Amazon Prime Video could mark a significant comeback for Sam Elliott in major movie roles, creating excitement for his return to the franchise.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

The Pink Ladies of “Grease,” the most colorful Rydell High students, are back on April 6 on Paramount+. However, this won’t be the same collection of young women from the original film — or even its cult classic sequel. This round, we see how the popular clique got its start. The girls now have a show of their own: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” a salute to 1950s teens who refuse to conform to conventional standards. The new musical series shows us Rydell High before Sandy and Danny start strutting down the halls. The show stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.

It’s impossible to have any discussion about actor and icon Sam Elliott without mentioning That Voice. Simultaneously rough and smooth, like gravel coated in melted butter, that distinctive, husky sound seems to emanate not from Elliott’s throat, but his very soul.
Filmmaker Brett Haley, who has made two recent films with Elliott, calls it “the most beautiful voice ever, special and singular.”
Bradley Cooper found it so distinctive, he used it as a launchpad for his character, country singer Jackson Maine, in his directorial debut “A Star Is Born” — and then cast Elliott as his brother, Bobby.
“We had never met and so I felt like I was taking a gamble,” Cooper admits of the day he invited Elliott over to his house to talk about the film. “I said, ‘I’m going to play something for you, and this might sound weird.’” He proceeded to play a...

Ralph Woolsey, an Emmy-winning cinematographer who worked on such series as Batman and It Takes a Thief and films including The Iceman Cometh and The Great Santini, has died. He was 104. The American Society of Cinematographers, which gave him its career award in 2003, said he died March 23 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills.

Among the many series he shot were Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip — for which he earned Emmy noms in 1959 and 1960, respectively — Batman and Mister Roberts. As an ailing Western actor suddenly facing is own mortality, the value of his life and how he has lived it, Sam Elliott not only excels but also has the role of his nearly half-century career. The Hero is one of those movies that creeps up on you as it goes along and by its conclusion has knocked you out with an emotional punch that makes this one a keeper.
As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), the entire cast is simply superb, but it is Elliott’s show. As Lee Hayden, a fading cowboy star whose main claim to fame was a film called The Hero, he has the leading role he has always deserved but seldom gets. Gregory Bonann was a lifeguard at Will Rogers State Beach in 1977 when he helped two children who were caught in a riptide. That rescue would ultimately change his life – and the face of television, setting the stage for the eventual “Baywatch” juggernaut.
Now, with the new feature adaptation of “Baywatch” in theaters this weekend, it’s time to revisit the unusual story of how the lifeguard show made it on the air – ultimately producing 242 episodes before ending its run in 2001.
It all started because it turns out Bonnan had saved the children of Stu Erwin, an executive at Mtm – the independent production company behind series like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Bob Newhart Show,” and run by legendary exec Grant Tinker.
While visiting Mtm’s offices in Studio City, Bonann pitched Erwin on a drama about lifeguards. The company passed, but Bonann took the opportunity to learn all about the TV biz.

There’s nothing fresh about the story of a movie star facing down the barrel of mortality, but it’s comfortable terrain for writer-director Brett Haley. The filmmaker’s tender 2015 drama “I’ll See You In My Dreams” found Blythe Danner playing an ex-singer looking back on her life in somber terms; now, Haley sets his sights on Sam Elliott — who played Danner’s suave romantic interest in “Dreams” — for another melancholic character study about the tribulations of getting old. “The Hero” finds Elliott in a deeply contemplative role, riffing on his own career and delivering a touching meditation on fading stardom. Haley may traffic in traditional sentiment, but again the actors elevate it.
As the perennial cowboy figure, it’s been many years since Elliott’s iconic roles in “Lifeguard” and “Tombstone;” for younger generations, his iconic drawl may be most familiar as the rambling voiceovers in “The Big Lebowski.

Chicago – Television has changed so much in the last generation that it’s hard to imagine a time of only three networks and a limited number of shows premiering every fall. But in the 1970s there were two such TV series, “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries,” starring Parker Stevenson, and “What’s Happening!!,” starring Ernest Thomas. They both made appearances at the “Hollywood Show” in Chicagoland.
The “Hollywood Show” is an event in which fans can mingle, take photographs and get autographs from the celebrities who appear there, and takes place in Chicago, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The next session will take place in Los Angeles on January 8th-10th, 2016. For complete details and ticket purchase information, click here.

Chicago – Actor Sam Eliott will make you smile. The distinctive voice, his famous mustache and his character presence in a film or TV show increases any potential in the production. He recently was in Chicago with director Paul Weitz, as they teamed up in the film “Grandma,” starring the incomparable Lily Tomlin.
“Grandma” has a very unique premise. Tomlin is the title character of Elle, who is visited by her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner). The girl is seeking an abortion, and her feminist poet grandmother seems like the right fellow traveler on her way to the procedure. Sam Elliott portrays Karl, Elle’s ex-husband – she left him for a same sex partner – who harbors a resentment toward circumstances in their relationship. The two meet along the way to the clinic, and the resentment boils to the surface.

Happy Friday, little darlings! It's been a long week, so let's all take a trust fall back into the marshmallowy softness of Ae Movie Club.
This week I'm starting things off with a Reviewlet of the new real-time indie horror flick Silent House, which then kickstarts a discussion of other "parlor trick" movies that successfully used sleight-of-hand to create a unique and engaging filmgoing experience.
It Came From Instant Queue looks under the fur of one of our most beloved playtime pals, our Movie Confessional asks which movies have gotten you out of your seat and out the door before the credits rolled, and of course we've got the usual heapin' helpins of Vintage Beefcake, new posters and trailers, and more movie talk that you can stuff in Jiminy Glick's underpants.
5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...Start!
