Plot: A studio exec (Seth Rogen) who finds himself promoted to the top slot at the studio has to juggle his wish to make great films with the pressures of his new job.
Review: What professions are most often depicted in movies and TV? Certainly, doctors, lawyers, cops (and criminals). To that, I’d add the Hollywood exec. Pretty much ever since they started making movies, Hollywood has been doing films about their business, with many of them classic tales, like the first two versions of A Star is Born (the latter two took on the even sexier music industry instead), Singing in the Rain, The Last Tycoon, The Player, Swimming With Sharks, and – on the small screen – the too quickly cancelled Action, and Entourage among others.
Yet, it can’t be denied that those earlier versions, even if they were at times scathingly critical, also adhered to the romance of the business.

If Hollywood truly suffers from a leadership malaise, as some charge, would the return of Monroe Stahr resuscitate the system? Filmmakers respect his judgment, stars his panache and investors his discipline, so Stahr’s return may ignite a new Irving Thalberg-like era.
Whoops — he’s not available.
The manic and manipulative hero of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon ruled MGM in its ‘30s heyday, but Stahr’s fictional reign was short-lived. So was Fitzgerald’s brilliant but never completed 1939 novel, which modeled Stahr after Thalberg.
Having achieved literary stardom with The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald’s decision to write a Hollywood novel, while simultaneously working as a script doctor, plunged the novelist into alcoholic paralysis. He never managed to finish his book and even his screenplays were unrealized.

Matt Bomer has been all over the silver screen as of late, and audiences are here for it. His versatility translates to so many different types of audiences, and he can jump into any role seamlessly. If you need proof of Bomer's star power, you don't need to look any further than White Collar, his crime drama that aired for six seasons on USA Network and will soon start streaming on Netflix. Since that series wrapped, Bomer has continued to shine in projects like The Last Tycoon, Magic Mike, The Boys in the Band, The Sinner, and his newest television show, Fellow Travelers. But it was his first hit series that really showed off his on-screen charisma and launched his career.

Victor J. Kemper, the veteran cinematographer who shot more than 50 features, including Dog Day Afternoon, Eyes of Laura Mars, The Jerk and Slap Shot, has died. He was 96.
Kemper died Monday of natural causes in Sherman Oaks, his son, Steven Kemper, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Kemper earned his inaugural D.P. credit on Husbands (1970), written and directed by John Cassavetes, then shot Elia Kazan’s final feature, The Last Tycoon (1976) and Tim Burton’s first, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985).
Kemper also did six films for director Arthur Hiller — The Tiger Makes Out (1967), The Hospital (1971), Author! Author! In 2007, Matt Bomer would have been a little too young to play Don Draper on Mad Men. (Jon Hamm has six years on him.) In most other ways, though, he would have been perfect. He has the kind of chiseled, leading man features, and the charisma to match, that make him seem like a man from an earlier time. His breakout TV role, 2009’s White Collar, even contrived a reason to dress him in Rat Pack-era suits, and he’s appeared in a number of period pieces, most notably Amazon...

Deadline Strike Talk hits a dubious 12th week milestone today, with the business shut down and actors picketing alongside the writers. Host Billy Ray has put together another strong group of guests who put the plight of working actors in relatable and understandable terms. Joining are four actors, three of whom are on the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee. Sarah Ramos’ credits include The Bear, Winning Time, and Parenthood; Shaan Sharma’s credits include The Chosen and Mr. Mercedes; Charles Bodin’s credits include Good Trouble, Halt and Catch Fire, and The Last Tycoon; and Andrew Leeds’s credits include Barry, The Patient, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
What emerges from their talk is compelling evidence that the idea of a middle class for actors has been wiped away, and they cite one member who had decent speaking parts in 13 things, and still did not make the $26,000 or so needed to qualify for healthcare.

Exclusive: Robert De Niro is attached to star in a Billy Ray-penned crime drama series that is in the works at Paramount+.
The two-time Oscar winner will lead Bobby Meritorious, an original series that comes from Paramount Television Studios. Paramount made the commitment to develop the project after winning out a competitive situation.
It marks De Niro’s second TV project to emerge in a matter of weeks after conspiracy thriller Zero Day, from Eric Newman, landed a limited series order at Netflix.
The series is set amid the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which is a sovereign kingdom with seemingly unlimited power and scope. But now an informant in Sdny’s biggest case, Avery “The Sage” Accomando, played by De Niro, is poised to tear this storied institution apart. Only one man can stop him, a fabled ex-cop-turned prosecutor affectionately known as Bobby Meritorious.

Afire (2023).In February, Christian Petzold’s new film Afire premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize. Set on the Baltic coast of Germany, the story follows novelist Leon (Thomas Schubert), who has escaped the city with his friend Felix (Langston Uibel), intending to put the finishing touches on his second book. Instead, the two become romantically enmeshed with Nadja (Paula Beer), a literary scholar who spends the summer selling ice cream, and the local lifeguard Devid (Enno Trebs). Unlike the others, Leon cannot embrace the season’s lighthearted self-abandonment and wanders sleeplessly through blue nights without darkness. All the while, forest fires blaze in the distance. At first, they only reach the protagonists as rumors, sounds of helicopters, and glowing red skies (the German title of the film means “Red Sky”), until the threat finally encroaches upon the immediate forests.

“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”
Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.
Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.
In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

When Robert De Niro came out swinging, rhetorically, at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016, it was the most stirring and surprising performance he'd given in years. "He's so blatantly stupid," he said in a campaign ad. "He's a punk. He's a dog. He's a pig. A con. A bulls**t artist. A mutt who doesn't know what he's talking about." Then he lowered the boom: "I'd like to punch him in the face."
Though the actor had long been on the record as a Democrat, he'd never been this emphatic about a political position in his public life. In fact, he'd never been emphatic about much of anything. Anyone who'd watched the actor squirm his way through an interview knew full well that the man wasn't much of a talker. When he did speak, he tended to be soft-spoken. He seemed almost embarrassed to be holding forth on any subject,...

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.
Pasek and Paul — whose “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songs have catapulted them into the front ranks of American songwriters in the past two years — are nominated for their new song, “In the Market for a Miracle,” written for Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live,” an adaptation of their 2012 stage musical.

In the age of peak TV, there’s a lot of bad television out there. But rather than take the time to highlight what everyone should already be forgetting, IndieWire is examining the heartbreaking misses of 2017; the shows that felt like they had something special — either in concept, talent, or early episodes — but failed to fulfill that promise.
For the shows that weren’t cancelled, hope rings eternal. TV is a medium that allows for development, improvement, and the virtual erasure of bad first impressions. The shows below might be a long way from getting good, but their break bad hurt enough that even for the most disappointing, we still hope for the best.
And if you like any shows on the list, then good luck and godspeed. You found something there that we only wish we could have seen. Maybe next year.

F. Scott Fitzgerald never fit in in Hollywood, where he came to write screenplays and ended up dying of a heart attack at 44. Maybe it’s fitting that Hollywood has such a tough time figuring out how to adapt his work. This month, for Amazon canceled two projects by the “Great Gatsby” author: “Z: The Beginning of Everything” and “The Last Tycoon.” The Matt Bomer-starring “Tycoon” was Fitzgerald’s final novel, inspired by 1930s Hollywood. “Z” starred Christina Ricci as the author’s wife, Zelda Fitzgerald. “There is a depth to Fitzgerald that Hollywood finds difficult to address,” David S.

Amazon has canceled its F. Scott Fitzgerald period drama The Last Tycoon, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The decision arrives days after the retail giant/streamer made an about face and canceled another Fitzgerald drama, the previously renewed Z: The Beginning of Everything, starring Christina Ricci as the author's wife, Zelda Fitzgerald.
Amazon had spent roughly $7 million during pre-production on the scrapped season of Z. The cancellations come as what sources say is larger belt-tightening going on at Amazon as the outlet looks for a large-scale hit.

It was kismet for Jennifer Beals when The Last Tycoon came along.
The 53-year-old actress, best known for her roles in Flashdance and The L Word, plays the fierce and in-demand Hollywood star Margo Taft, who comes into the fray in the original Amazon series' third episode and proves a strong woman isn't to be toyed with.
As Margo, Beals showcases a woman -- who keeps her biracial identity a secret -- unafraid to demand what she's worth and even forces directors to show their private parts before she begins filming their movie.
Beals recently jumped on the phone with Et to discuss her exciting new role on the 1930s-set The Last Tycoon, which also stars Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer and Lily Collins, and offers an update on the long-awaited Showtime revival of The L Word.

The era of prestige television dramas has ushered in a mentality that a high-stakes period piece, in order to be an artistic success, must have a raw intensity to justify a full series’ existence. Ostensibly, “The Last Tycoon” offers the perfect opportunity for just that, a cutthroat look at life in Old Hollywood as a nation reels from the effects of the Great Depression and hurtles toward World War II.
Instead, the latest interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished 1941 novel is more akin to the high melodrama that characterized many of the most popular dramas of that era. The result is a glossy look at the time period that, despite leaning on some familiar emotional and story territory, still makes for an engaging, enjoyable viewing experience.

Based on his performance in the July 28-launching The Last Tycoon on Amazon, Kelsey Grammer might want to consider making room for at least one more Emmy nomination in his life. I say that because having watched the nine-episode adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished 1941 novel, the five-time Emmy winner's turn as ruthless Hollywood studio chief Pat Brady is simply boss, as I say in my video review above. I say that with his lead role over two seasons of Starz's Bo…...

Just before his death, F. Scott Fitzgerald was working on a book called The Last Tycoon (alternately titled The Love of the Last Tycoon). It remained unfinished until 1941, when Fitzgerald’s close friend and fellow writer Edmund Wilson completed it. The story is loosely based on the legendary Hollywood figure of Irving Thalberg, known as “The Boy Wonder” of MGM. The story chronicles Thalberg’s avatar, Monroe Stahr, through his life in movies in the 1930s, and his relationship with his studio boss Pat Brady (modeled on Louis B. Mayer). Amazon’s new series, The Last Tycoon, keeps Monroe (…...

There are quite a few puzzling aspects to The Last Tycoon, but the biggest head-scratcher of all is: If your studio executive looks like Matt Bomer, why not just put him in all your movies?
Bomer’s matinee-idol looks are certainly put to good use in Amazon’s retro Hollywood drama (debuting Friday, July 28) — he looks damn good in a tailored suit and fedora — but like a lot of The Last Tycoon, the substance falls far short of the image. Plagued by corny dialogue and clumsy plotting, this ambitious series aims for the stars but plays more like a first-weekend flop.

“The picture is the baby,” is the driving mantra of Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer), the titular character in Amazon’s latest serial drama The Last Tycoon, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished novel of the same name. The show follows the ups and downs of Stahr as he tries to protect that baby, sometimes at the cost of his own soul. A successful young producer in the late 1930s who runs the lot of Brady-American Pictures with an iron fist wrapped in a silk glove, Stahr has to navigate the demands of starlets, rival producers, and his pool of screenwriters while dealing with his acerbic boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer), his friend and occasional antagonist.

Amazon has just released the trailer for its adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's final novel, The Last Tycoon. The story is about the early days of Hollywood, and the creation of the Hollywood "brand," as a young Golden Boy (Matt Bomer) takes on his mentor and boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer) for control of their studio. Production-wise, the series' style looks similar to Z: The Beginning of Everything, Amazon's drama about the Fitzgeralds (primarily Zelda, played by Christina Ricci). That series has been renewed for a second season, even though it was a pretty standard biopic without …...
