J.J. Abrams’ New Max Series Races Towards a Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
With it recently announced that it had been renamed HBO Max, many people's favorite streaming service is back in the limelight, but not only for its rechristening shenanigans. Many are also talking about the streamer's brand-new crime drama Duster, a new series from the ever-reliable J.J. Abrams. Just one episode has so far been released, but that hasn't stopped many from calling it an unmissable addition to Max's May line-up.

Following "a rookie FBI agent seeking revenge. A reckless getaway driver looking for justice. And a case involving the FBI, the CIA, the Russians, and God knows who else," the series stars the likes of Josh Holloway, best known for his role as Sawyer in Lost, Prison Break's Camille Guaty,The Last O.G.'s Sydney Elisabeth, Love, Victor's Rachel Hilson, and several other notable names. It seems that not only are audiences impressed after the first episode, but so are critics,...

Proyecto ovni (2025)
Project UFO ‘Netflix’ Series Recap & Ending Explained: Is ‘Project UFO’ a Political Allegory Disguised as Sci-Fi?
Proyecto ovni (2025)
“Project UFO”, now streaming on Netflix, uses alien sightings as a sharp metaphor for political unrest in modern Poland. At its center is Sokolik, a man obsessed with the idea that extraterrestrials are hiding beneath the sea. Opposite him is Polgar, a slick television personality on the hunt for a sensational story. Their paths intersect when a local man, Kunik, claims he was abducted by aliens, setting off a chain of events that draws in Julia, a woman trying to untangle the madness, and Wera, a power player in high places.

The series explores how easily truth becomes elastic when ambition, fear, and desperation are in play. As each character chases their version of reality, Project UFO exposes a deep yearning in people to believe the unbelievable—especially when it serves a hidden need. Blending science fiction with sharp political commentary, the show challenges viewers to ask: what is real,...

Esg’s Renee Scroggins may be over 60, but her voice still has the same mix of joy, mischievousness, and don’t-fuck-with-us sass when she sings “Moody” or “Erase You” that she had when she was a teenager performing with her sisters in the 1970s and early 1980s.

“I had never heard a band that mixed punk and funk and soul like they did,” says Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Along with singer and composer Tamar-kali, Hanna curated Lincoln Center’s current American Songbook program celebrating “singer outsiders.

The True Story Behind Netflix's The Manhattan Alien Abduction, Explained
Image
A recent Netflix docuseries has captured the attention of subscribers, and it's one that deserves a slightly deeper dive. "The Manhattan Alien Abduction" tells the alleged true story of a woman named Linda Napolitano, who claims to have been abducted by aliens in the late '80s. This series attempts to get to the bottom of it all. The true story behind the documentary is, as one would expect, a bit messy, given that we're dealing with an uncertain phenomenon. That said, it's worth going over the history of this case for viewers who are either reckoning with what they just witnessed or who are looking to ride the wave of popularity surrounding this doc right now.

Netflix using true stories to craft popular television is nothing new. The success of stuff like "Files of the Unexplained" on the streaming service is proof enough of that, but there are near-countless examples.

10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of The 1970s
Image
Following the success of '60s series like Doctor Who and Star Trek, the 1970s introduced a variety of inspired, fun science fiction adventures. Though the technology wasn't as advanced during the '70s and didn't allow for elaborate special effects appreciated in today's sci-fi TV shows, the low-budget quality of the series' special effects adds a unique charm. While some shows leaned into the action-packed campiness of the decade, others preferred a grounded approach to the genre.

Shows such as Timeslip and Doomwatch have strong themes surrounding the dangers of reckless science experiments, tying these messages into their adventurous plots. However, the '70s still had plenty of exciting stories to tell as well. The Six Million Dollar Man and Battlestar Galactica are just two sci-fi TV shows that had strong heroic leads and absorbing conflicts set in space.

'The Blue Angels' Director Reveals What the Navy Didn't Want in the IMAX Documentary
Image
The idea for The Blue Angels was the "brainchild" of producer and actor Rob Stone (Mr. Belvedere) and former Blue Angels Commanding Officer Greg "Boss" Wooldridge to celebrate the Flight Demonstration Squadron's 75th anniversary. Four years ago, they were struggling to get the documentary off the ground before contacting Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick fame, who then got filmmaker J.J. Abrams (Lost) involved with his production company Bad Robot. Abrams then recruited editor and director Paul Crowder (The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years), having worked together previously on the miniseries UFO, to helm what would become a tribute documentary filmed in stunning IMAX that puts audiences in the cockpit with some of the Navy's most elite pilots.

Hollywood at a Crossroads: “Everyone Is Using AI, But They Are Scared to Admit It”
Image
For horror fans, Late Night With the Devil marked one of the year’s most anticipated releases. Embracing an analog film filter, the found-footage flick starring David Dastmalchian reaped praise for its top-notch production design by leaning into a ’70s-era grindhouse aesthetic reminiscent of Dawn of the Dead or Death Race 2000. Following a late-night talk show host airing a Halloween special in 1977, it had all the makings of a cult hit.

But the movie may be remembered more for the controversy surrounding its use of cutaway graphics created by generative artificial intelligence tools. One image of a dancing skeleton in particular incensed some theatergoers. Leading up to its theatrical debut in March, it faced the prospect of a boycott, though that never materialized.

The movie’s directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes defended the AI usage, explaining the art was touched up by human hands. In a statement, they said, “We...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From A Clockwork Orange
Image
Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. The protagonist is Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) a 15-year-old punk who drinks drug-laced milk before taking to the street with his gang of droogs to savagely and gleefully beat and assault anyone who passes into their field of vision. Alex is eventually arrested and put into prison where the government subjects him to bizarre new rehabilitation techniques in an attempt to turn his mind away from violence.

Throughout, Alex is depicted as clearly beyond redemption. He has no compassion and will never have compassion. When he reads about Jesus Christ being crucified, he imagines himself to be the Roman soldier whipping him. The government's brainwashing techniques only instill in him a...

Exclusive: Nick Tate Unpacks Space: 1999 and an Upcoming Doc About Its Iconic Spaceship
Image
There’s nothing quite as illuminating as visiting a sci-fi conference and realizing that more than 5,000 model makers are in attendance. It was an eye-opener for actor/producer Nick Tate, who played the stalwart Alan Carter in TV’s Space: 1999 back in 1975. “I thought they wouldn't take any notice of me because they're so interested in the models, but I was overwhelmed with the reaction from these guys because they love the Eagle Transporter in the show, and they know that my character Alan Carter was the pilot. I was signing model Eagles, which was extraordinary to find yourself doing.”

Tate may be doing more of that in the near future, thanks to Jeffrey Morris. The filmmaker is diligently raising funds via Kickstarter to produce his much-anticipated documentary The Eagle Has Landed. The doc will feature interviews with Tate and co-star Barbara Bain, who played Dr. Helena Russell on the show,...

4 Reasons Why The Masked Singer Season 9 Format Works Best
Image
The Masked Singer season 9 has the best format in the show's history for several reasons. Since its debut in 2019, the mystery celebrity singing competition series has had many different forms of competition. The Masked Singer seasons 1 and 2 had two groups of contestants who performed during alternate weeks. One contestant was eliminated each week until the groups merged together to compete to crown the winner. The Masked Singer season 3 changed things by having the first group of contestants compete week after week until the top three were determined. This continued with two more groups until a Super Nine emerged. Season 4 had a similar format, along with season 5.

The Masked Singer season 6 introduced wildcards, while season 7 had three groups, The Good, The Bad, and The Cuddly. For season 8, they created a new format in which three groups competed, with two singers revealed in each episode. The Masked Singer season 9 had the same format,...

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - How to Have an Alien Encounter
Image
Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons is all about recruiting visitors to one's island; however, some players may not realize that such unexpected encounters can include aliens. Players can encounter a broadcast on a TV that might enable them to spot this easter egg. If players don’t already have a TV, they will need to craft one using a recipe from one of the neighbors or purchase it from Nook. San Diego’s Weird History Makes Sdcc a Lot Spookier
John E.L. Tenney
San Diego Comic-Con is the domain of weirdos. What began in a hotel basement in 1970 as the one-day Golden State Comic-Minicon grew to become Sdcc in 1973 and then Comic-Con International: San Diego (Cci) in 1995. It is the Super Bowl of pop culture fandom. It is a place where 130,000 ticketed attendees—not counting thousands more who will make a pilgrimage to the city during the con—will arrive once more after a three-year hiatus to let their geek flags fly. And over the course of five days, San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is the worldwide capital of weirdos.

But what is a weirdo? The word has its etymology in “wyrd,” which means “fate” or “destiny.” And a weirdo is one who is in control of their own destiny. Hat tip to weird researcher John E.L. Tenney for reminding me of that. Yet “weird” also means “strange” or “bizarre.” There’s a...
