As James Gunn brings Peacemaker into his new Dcu with Season 2, he’s clearing up some canonical confusion for fans.

Following this week’s season premiere ‘The Ties That Grind’, the DC Studios boss explained that he doesn’t plan to retcon Season 1, despite subbing in Isabela Merced‘s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion‘s Green Lantern for two Dceu characters featured in the first season finale.

“No, unfortunately I’d have to change too many little things throughout Season 1, and it would cost too much money,” he told TV Insider. “And I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots of superheroes.

James Gunn, the creator of Peacemaker, recently explained why he isn’t going back to change Season 1 despite the new Justice League retcon.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Gunn confirmed that updating the previous season would be far too expensive. “I would have to change too many things throughout Season 1, it would cost too much money, and I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots in Supergirl,” he said.

He added, “We say canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I love for people to watch Season 1, but obviously… we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it… at least not at this point.

John Stewart is coming to the DC Universe. Aaron Pierre, who will play the fan-favorite Green Lantern, recently opened up about how he is approaching playing this character in Lanterns.

Commandos takes it one step further by dedicating each episode to exploring the backstories of its titular monsters, which adds some much-needed emotional depth — especially when it comes to G.I. Robot and Weasel (both voiced by Sean Gunn). The same approach is taken for the Season 1 finale, "A Very Funny Monster," though the outcome leaves a lot to be desired.

Mood whiplash has always been an integral aspect of James Gunn’s writing, as viewers can go from laughing at Milton’s role in the squad to shedding a tear during Polka-Dot Man’s death. However, in Creature Commandos, this has been dialed to 11, and for good reason, as despite the episodes’ short runtime, Gunn has managed to give fans an adequate amount of laughs and boatloads of trauma.

As for the latter, almost every creature in the show has some of the most gut-wrenching backstories to be told in a DC show, which is saying something. One such character is Nina, and one complaint against her character’s purpose in the overall narrative highlights one major issue among some Cbm fans.

While the series showed that several team members didn't deserve to be there, Nina always stood out to me. She is shy, awkward, kind, and not prone to rule-breaking. Everything besides her appearance is so human that I never understood why Nina was part of this team. To join Task Force M, these non-human creatures had to be arrested, and there is nothing in Nina's personality to explain why she would be there.

Creature Commandos has established the foundations for the Dcu, and canonized some of the characters from James Gunn's previous projects, and the finale does this yet again. While Gunn's Superman movie will mark the beginning of the Dcu in terms of a theatrical release, Creature Commandos beat the Man of Steel to the premiere spot on the slate. And, since Gunn is intent on making the entire Dcu, including animation, TV shows, films, and even games, into one connected universe, the events of one have a knock-on effect on the others.

In general, this makes sense for the newly rebooted universe, creating one continuous narrative, with clearly defined boundaries such as the DC Elseworlds projects to distinguish what is canonical. However, despite the fresh start to the universe, Gunn's own body of work for DC creates some confusion.

To call Creature Commandos Season 1 intense would be an understatement. Amanda Waller's Task Force M has been in the trenches, trying to ensure America maintains a friendship with Pokolistan, so that the USA could get its oil. It continues to show, even with Task Force X sidelined, Waller will always find a way to be a valuable asset to her government.

However, an unpredictable, dark conspiracy broke out thanks to Circe's visions. It resulted in Waller needing her team to head back to the European nation to kill its leader, Princess Ilana.

The Dcu launched with its first project, Creature Commandos, an animated series written by DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn. Since the Dcu's theatrical start isn't until the release of Superman in 2025, Creature Commandos gives audiences the first look at DC's newly rebooted film and TV franchise. The show is based on the DC Comics team of the same name, which is composed of more obscure DC characters. Given Gunn has a habit of adapting strange characters, like Polka-Dot Man, it shouldn't be a surprise that he chose to start the Dcu here.

Aside from its strange characters, Creature Commandos is unique in that it's the first attempt to launch a cinematic universe with an animated TV show as opposed to a major movie. The season finale of Creature Commandos introduced some new and old faces to make up for the line-up of Task Force M after the cerebral season finale saw one neck-breaking twist after the other. With all the shocking deaths this season, Season 2 could not get here any faster.

Robot was blown up by Circe, while Nina met her end at the hands of Princess Ilana. The season finale of Creature Commandos dropped on Max today, wrapping up the story of Task Force M and their mission in Pokolistan once and for all. After plenty of intrigue, premonitions about the end of the world, and tragic backstories for each member of the Commandos, the series ends on one last sad note with the death of what was perhaps the most innocent member of the team, Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao). Nina's death came after her attempt to assassinate Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), in which the Princess ended up stabbing her to death instead.

Here’s the logline: “Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.”

The Season 1 finale dropped on Thursday (January 9). In the episode, Nina’s birth becomes complicated in unexpected ways, and the Commandos close in on Princess Ilana, once and for all.

One DC star has praised another. Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo has praised the Golden Globes for awarding Colin Farrell for his work on DC Studios' The Penguin.

In a statement posted on his Instagram Story (via X), Grillo wrote, "They got this right. I've been friends [with] Colin for almost 20 [years]. His work has been stellar. However, it is not just Momoa who has appeared in multiple DC movies in different roles. Creature Commandos launches James Gunn's DC Universe, introducing audiences to a new cinematic universe full of iconic comic book characters.
