James Gunn Won’t Retcon ‘Peacemaker’ After ‘Superman’ Crossover: “I’d Love To George Lucas The S*** Out Of It”
Image
As James Gunn brings Peacemaker into his new Dcu with Season 2, he’s clearing up some canonical confusion for fans.

Following this week’s season premiere ‘The Ties That Grind’, the DC Studios boss explained that he doesn’t plan to retcon Season 1, despite subbing in Isabela Merced‘s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion‘s Green Lantern for two Dceu characters featured in the first season finale.

“No, unfortunately I’d have to change too many little things throughout Season 1, and it would cost too much money,” he told TV Insider. “And I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots of superheroes.

“But I think that we deal with it. We say, canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I’d love for people to watch Season 1. Obviously, we’re changing that one thing, but we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of...

James Gunn Says Changing ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 Post-Justice League Retcon Is Too Expensive, But He’d Love To
Image
James Gunn, the creator of Peacemaker, recently explained why he isn’t going back to change Season 1 despite the new Justice League retcon.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Gunn confirmed that updating the previous season would be far too expensive. “I would have to change too many things throughout Season 1, it would cost too much money, and I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots in Supergirl,” he said.

He added, “We say canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I love for people to watch Season 1, but obviously… we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it… at least not at this point.

Peacemaker Season 2 Review: James Gunn's Misfits Tackle Their Trauma In A Stellar Second Season
Image
"Peacemaker" is kind of a miracle. The HBO Max series started as a sequel to James Gunn's 2021 comic book movie "The Suicide Squad," starring the one character nobody really wanted to see more of, and yet it worked. Actually, it didn't just work — it rocked. The first season of "Peacemaker" followed John Cena as a version of the old DC Comics character Peacemaker, a deeply patriotic superhero with a silly silver helmet and a pet eagle named Eagly for a sidekick, and it showed him fighting his inner demons just as much as it showed him working to save the world from alien brain bugs called "Butterflies."

The audience got to know his alter ego, Christopher Smith, a deeply insecure but ultimately good guy with a traumatic past and a white supremacist supervillain dad (played by Robert Patrick), and we got to see him grow from being a miserable...

James Gunn Confirms He’s Actively Working on Bringing One Dceu Character Into the Dcu
Image
Fans are wondering if Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, or if her version of the character is done for good. Gunn, who is now co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has been busy rebooting the DC on-screen world with a new lineup of movies and shows.

The new slate started last year with Gunn’s Creature Commandos. The new universe also has a corporate-style Justice Gang instead of the classic Justice League, and new versions of Wonder Woman and Batman are still to be cast.

Robert Pattinson will return for The Batman Part II, but the future of Harley Quinn is still uncertain.

When asked if Robbie would return, Gunn told Entertainment Weekly, “That will be revealed down the line.” He didn’t provide any further details about Harley Quinn, keeping fans guessing about whether Robbie will reprise her fan-favorite role.

'Clayface’ Movie Finds Its Lead in a ‘The Gentlemen’ Star
Image
DC Studios has found its Clayface. Tom Rhys Harris has been cast as the titular character in the upcoming movie produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. The companies havee been looking for the protagonist of this story for months, after it was announced that James Watkinswould be directing the highly-anticipated project. No other actors for the Clayface movie have been announced. The film is expected to dive into principal photography in the near future, with a September 11, 2026 release date announced for the movie.

Tom Rhys Harries is getting ready to become one of the most strange villains from Batman's roster. The original Clayface from the pages of DC Comics, Basil Karlo, is a moderately successful actor who becomes a murderer after he isn't allowed to star in the remake of one of his movies. David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
Everyone deserves a second chance, especially some of the greatest superheroes ever created. At this point, it isn't a secret that he previous iteration of DC Extended Universe failed to meet fans' expectations. However, a blank slate is now upon us, and the very first strokes of paint will come on Jul. 11, 2025, with the release of Superman.

The Man of Steel's upcoming adventure—along with the Creature Commandos animated series—are just the first in a brand new slate of projects set in a fresh DC Universe. Batman will eventually be the star of The Brave and the Bold, both Hal Jordan and John Stewart will steal the spotlight on the Lanterns show, and many more adaptations featuring iconic heroes will be released soon. Many DC projects are coming our way, and the best part is that this is only the beginning. James Gunn merely announced one part of the first chapter of Dcu,...

Jason Ritter talks ‘Lanterns,’ working up the nerve to ask to wear the power ring
Image
Jason Ritter may not be playing a member of the fabled Green Lantern Corps in Lanterns, the upcoming Max series adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern mythos, but he wants you to know he’s eager to don the power ring if called to duty.

“I have to say, personally for me, being a fan of Green Lantern growing up, getting to see the ring in person was cool to me,” Ritter told Gold Derby about admiring the intergalactic peacekeepers’ iconic emerald ring on set. “I haven't quite gotten to the point where I am like, ‘Can I try that on?’ I'm hoping to at some point to just try it on, say the oath really quick, see what happens.”

Ritter plays Billy Macon, a character who may or may not have roots in the comic book canon. Macon is married to a dutiful small-town sheriff (Kelly Macdonald) and is...

HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Series Adds Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Ahead of ‘Superman’
Image
The Green Lantern Corps just got louder, because Nathan Fillion is returning as Guy Gardner in HBO’s Lanterns series following his debut as the hotheaded Green Lantern in this summer’s Superman, which hits theaters on July 11, as per EW. Fillion joins previously announced leads Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, who are playing John Stewart and Hal Jordan, respectively, in the upcoming prestige DC drama.

Lanterns is the first live-action series to be made from scratch under the new leadership of DC — James Gunn and Peter Safran — as part of the new slate, and is being developed as a dark, grounded, True Detective-style mystery set on Earth. The story follows John Stewart as a rookie Lantern recruited into the Corps, who teams up with veteran Hal Jordan to investigate a murder in the American heartland that spirals into a much bigger cosmic conspiracy.

Gunn had previously hinted that “a...

'Hit Man' Star Adria Arjona Responds to Wonder Woman Fan-Casting
Image
A fan-favorite choice for the role of Wonder Woman in James Gunn’s slowly emerging Dcu has expressed interest in joining the comic book movie franchise as the Amazonian superhero. At present, little is known about Gunn and his DC Studios co-ceo Peter Safran’s plans for Wonder Woman, with the iconic hero glimpsed in animated form in the Creature Commandos series and a prequel series titled Paradise Lost reportedly in the works.

The lack of insight into their ideas includes a total lack of knowing who will play Wonder Woman and thus take over from Gal Gadot when the character does make her Dcu debut. Well, one fan-casting favorite, Hit Man star Adria Arjona, has now expressed interest in the coveted role. Footage shared by YouTuber and X/Twitter user @yara_wayne finds Arjona being asked about the potential of her playing Wonder Woman, to which she responds with...

Batman & Iconic DC Villains Feature in Jason Bateman State Farm Ad
Image
While James Gunn mulls over introducing his own version of Batman in the rebooted DC Universe, Jason Bateman has beaten him to the punch in the latest State Farm commercial. Yes, you read that correctly. For whatever reason, the insurance company created a big-budget version of the Dark Knight and his greatest adversaries, all for the sake of gaining new customers. It's not clear if the stunning new advertisement will be successful in doing so, but it sure does look pretty.

Over the past week, State Farm has been subtly teasing a Batman-related marketing campaign in 30-second TV spots. However, it's only now that the full version has been released, and it's "Batman vs Bateman" in the Gotham City-set commercial that includes several celebrity cameos and plenty of DC villains. In addition to Bateman, who plays a discount version of Batman, the advertisement features Sza as Catwoman, Kai Cenat as himself,...

Peter Safran: Clayface Was Greenlit Despite James Gunn Saying “We had no plans” Because Mike Flanagan Met the 1 Condition Gunn Wants Whole Dcu to Follow
Image
Unlike the previous Dceu, whose attempt at replicating the MCU formula failed exponentially, the new regime under James Gunn and Peter Safran is taking a more creator-driven approach than a producer-driven model. In contrast to the MCU, which is notable for announcing projects without a final draft at hand, the DC heads have been pretty vocal about prioritizing writers.

This explains why Brave and the Bold is yet to hit production and why Clayface is eyeing a 2026 release, not long after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

James Gunn Shares Clayface Movie Update, Reveals if Creature Commandos Star Will Reprise Role
Image
With DC ramping up production on several projects, fans are finally hearing news on one of James Gunn’s most promising projects in the works - one that has the makings of truly embracing the horror elements of the DC universe. Directed by Mike Flanagan the film is expected to be a horror-thriller tragedy and will be released in 2026.

Clayface is one of Batman’s most iconic villains, who gains the ability to morph his body after gaining the mutant deformation of having his entire body turned into clay. With very little heard about the film since December last year, Gunn has finally given an update on where Clayface stands and who Won’T be playing the character, per Variety. He confirmed that Alan Tudyk will not reprise the role after voicing Clayface in Creature Commandos.

John Stewart is coming to the DC Universe. Aaron Pierre, who will play the fan-favorite Green Lantern, recently opened up about how he is approaching playing this character in Lanterns.

Speaking with The Buzz (via X) at the 2025 ABFF Honors, Pierre revealed that he is "locked in and focused" on Lanterns, which began filming earlier this month in Los Angeles. ‘Consummate Filmmaker’: James Gunn Shares Sweet Tribute to Zack Snyder in New Photo
Image
The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.

The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he's at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other's work. Now, Gunn has proven the two are close in real life, as well, with a photo on Threads that's going viral on social media.

The Dcu's Casting of Another Iconic Villain Inspires Confidence in Green Lantern's Future

The DC Universe has already begun with one TV series by way of Creature Commandos, but more are on the way. One of these is Lanterns, which will focus on the Green Lantern mythos with both Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Recently, a casting decision was announced for the show, and it bodes well for one member of the Green Lantern Corps in particular, in a ironic way.

Ulrich Thompsen has been cast as Sinestro in Lanterns, bringing the most iconic Green Lantern villain to the Dcu. He's also Hal Jordan's infamous rival, which speaks to both characters having a major role in the shared universe. It might also avoid the mistakes of other attempted Dcu adaptations, while putting certain fears about the show to rest.

James Gunn Clears Creature Commandos' Man-Bat Rumors
Image
DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently cleared up a Man-Bat misconception about Creature Commandos. This comes after Gunn revealed scrapped Creature Commandos characters.

Gunn brought this subject upon Bluesky, in response to a fan question, "Man-Bat wasn't going to be in [Creature Commandos]," he wrote."He's merely one of the many characters I considered. And yes, I'd be disappointed if we never see Mb in the Dcu." 'Creature Commandos' Nearly Featured Man-Bat, Wolfpack & More DC Villains

Creature Commandos will be returning for a second season, featuring an all-new group of monster-like villains. However, James Gunn, who created the animated series and serves as the co-ceo of DC Studios, has now revealed the critically-acclaimed Season 1 nearly included an entirely different cast of characters for the titular team. Several names will pop out for diehard fans of the source material, as well as potentially tease future members of the Creature Commandos.

While replying to a fan on Threads, Gunn revealed that several, more familiar creature-like villains from the DC canon nearly formed part of Task Force M in Creature Commandos. He named four different characters — Wolfpack, Man-Bat, Vincent Velcoro and Solomon Grundy — all of which have clear resemblances to members of the supervillain group. ‘Creature Commandos’ Made a Big Mistake With That Major Death, But It Can Be Fixed
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the Creature Commando Season 1 finale.Creature Commandos features the usual hallmark of a James Gunn project: a collection of misfits who are carrying around some immense trauma but manage to band together to either save others - or save themselves in the process. It's the same approach that powered his previous DC Comics projects The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, as well as his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel Studios. Commandos takes it one step further by dedicating each episode to exploring the backstories of its titular monsters, which adds some much-needed emotional depth — especially when it comes to G.I. Robot and Weasel (both voiced by Sean Gunn). The same approach is taken for the Season 1 finale, "A Very Funny Monster," though the outcome leaves a lot to be desired.

“That’s the entire point of her character”: Media Literacy is Dead When You Realize Why James Gunn Put Nina in ‘Creature Commandos’ Without Any Powers

Mood whiplash has always been an integral aspect of James Gunn’s writing, as viewers can go from laughing at Milton’s role in the squad to shedding a tear during Polka-Dot Man’s death. However, in Creature Commandos, this has been dialed to 11, and for good reason, as despite the episodes’ short runtime, Gunn has managed to give fans an adequate amount of laughs and boatloads of trauma.

As for the latter, almost every creature in the show has some of the most gut-wrenching backstories to be told in a DC show, which is saying something. Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Creature Commandos Season 1 finale.Creature Commandos introduced several fascinating characters in its first season, from the Bride (Indira Varma) to the misunderstood Weasel (Sean Gunn). Though every member of the unconventional team is considered a dangerous criminal, Creature Commandos slowly revealed their backstories, making us willing to forget any crimes they actually committed. Yet the series finally tackled the most suspicious inclusion of Task Force M: Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao). While the series showed that several team members didn't deserve to be there, Nina always stood out to me. She is shy, awkward, kind, and not prone to rule-breaking. Everything besides her appearance is so human that I never understood why Nina was part of this team. To join Task Force M, these non-human creatures had to be arrested, and there is nothing in Nina's personality to explain why she would be there.

There has been much talk about Batman's role in the Dcu recently. "I’ve gotten to work on a lot of interesting projects [that were] very different to each other, but I haven’t played a villain before," Bakalova told Gizmodo following the Dcu show's season finale, which concluded with some bombshell reveals about Ilana's true motives. "I haven't played somebody that is using manipulation to get what they wanted. To sacrifice their dignity and humanity to achieve a goal of power and control over society. It’s interesting," she continued.

DC Universe Confirms Another James Gunn Character Is Canon, But Recasts Legendary Actor To Do So
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for the Creature Commandos season 1 finale.

Creature Commandos has established the foundations for the Dcu, and canonized some of the characters from James Gunn's previous projects, and the finale does this yet again. While Gunn's Superman movie will mark the beginning of the Dcu in terms of a theatrical release, Creature Commandos beat the Man of Steel to the premiere spot on the slate. And, since Gunn is intent on making the entire Dcu, including animation, TV shows, films, and even games, into one connected universe, the events of one have a knock-on effect on the others.

In general, this makes sense for the newly rebooted universe, creating one continuous narrative, with clearly defined boundaries such as the DC Elseworlds projects to distinguish what is canonical. However, despite the fresh start to the universe, Gunn's own body of work for DC creates some confusion.

Image
[Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers for the finale of “Creature Commandos”]

The DC Universe is here. While we wait for Superman to fly onto the big screen again, it is the adult animated series “Creature Commandos” that serves as our first introduction to this new version of the DC world led by James Gunn. And it is very much James Gunn’s world. “Creature Commandos” is essentially “The Suicide Squad” but with monsters.

Throughout the first season, the Max animated series explored the tragic origin story of each member of its titular team, while also following their investigation of a threat on the fictional country of Pokolistan and their defense of its princess, Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), from an assassination plot by the Amazonian sorceress Circe (Anya Chalotra). Halfway through the season, however, things changed. After capturing Circe, the team was sent back to Pokolistan to assassinate the princess instead. The mission change was spurred on by the mythical...

Creature Commandos: Cast, Story Details & Everything We Know
Image
The Dcu launched with its first project, Creature Commandos, an animated series written by DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn. Since the Dcu's theatrical start isn't until the release of Superman in 2025, Creature Commandos gives audiences the first look at DC's newly rebooted film and TV franchise. The show is based on the DC Comics team of the same name, which is composed of more obscure DC characters. Given Gunn has a habit of adapting strange characters, like Polka-Dot Man, it shouldn't be a surprise that he chose to start the Dcu here.

Aside from its strange characters, Creature Commandos is unique in that it's the first attempt to launch a cinematic universe with an animated TV show as opposed to a major movie. Gunn has also mentioned the possibility that characters from the animated Creature Commandos show could pop up in live-action Dcu projects. Anyone invested in staying informed about...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos

The season finale of Creature Commandos dropped on Max today, wrapping up the story of Task Force M and their mission in Pokolistan once and for all. After plenty of intrigue, premonitions about the end of the world, and tragic backstories for each member of the Commandos, the series ends on one last sad note with the death of what was perhaps the most innocent member of the team, Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao). The death was somewhat unexpected, especially with all the development the character had been given in the previous episode. In an interview with The Direct, Chao spoke about why she believed this untimely and tragic death had to happen to a...
