Eldorado is a fictional country. It's entirely based on political and social issues of Brazil after 1964 while the country was under a military dictatorship that was over only in 1985.

A few excerpts from speeches made by the character played by Paulo Autran were used in the song "Bananas", written and performed by rock group Titãs. The band does not use audio from the film, but they insert the speech into the song. They acknowledge the film on the album "A Maior Banda de Todos os Tempos da Última Semana".
