It's important to remember that few of the actors on "Star Trek," especially in the early days, were familiar with the universe of "Star Trek." While the trappings and themes of Trek are a deeply embedded part of popular culture in the early 21st century, back in the 1960s, "Star Trek" was merely a middling, mid-budget sci-fi network show. As such, when guest stars signed on to play an alien or a creature, they likely needed the premise of "Star Trek" explained to them by a director or a screenwriter. This is the 23rd century, war is over, and humanity is traveling the stars in military-twinged vessels devoted to study and diplomacy. That man, Bill, plays a starship captain named Kirk who leads by instinct. You play a [insert character description here]. These are basic motivations that an actor would need to hear in order to fall into the "Star Trek" ethos before cameras began rolling.

The first time I saw Alan Arkin onscreen, he scared the hell out of me.

The veteran Academy Award-winning actor, who died Thursday at the age of 89, is best known these days for his wittily avuncular presence in films like Little Miss Sunshine and such television shows as The Kominsky Method, his last great acting role. But my first exposure to him came in middle school, where for some inexplicable reason the powers that be decided that treating the entire student body to a screening of the film Wait Until Dark was a good idea.

In that classic 1967 thriller, Arkin played Harry Roat, the most sadistic member of a trio of villains terrorizing a blind Audrey Hepburn because they think she possesses a doll filled with heroin. In a climactic scene set in almost near-darkness, a seemingly dead Roat suddenly jumps into the frame and grabs Hepburn by the leg.

The late, great influential composer is represented in this year’s Tonys with the acclaimed, popular revivals of his 1979 classic “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Street” earning eight nominations and 1987’s “Into the Woods” receiving six.

Sixty years ago, it was Sondheim’s musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” which dominated the Tony Awards with six wins: best musical, best producer for Harold Prince, best director for George Abbott, best author for Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, leading actor for Zero Mostel and featured actor for David Burns. Ironically, Sondheim failed to earn a nomination for best original score (music and/or lyrics) written for the theater. He would not win for his tunes until “Company” in 1971. At first glance, the Emmys are giving a lot of love to young performers including Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”). But looks can be deceiving because there are several Emmy veterans in their 70s, 80s and even 90s nipping at these whippersnappers’ heels in the quest for the gold statute.

She’s nominated for the fifth time for guest role in a drama series as Ophelia Harkness on ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and is also being inducted into the academy Hall of Fame. Reni Santoni, the American film and TV actor who played Clint Eastwood’s young partner in Dirty Harry and recurred as the pizza maker Poppie on Seinfeld, has died after a long illness. He was 81.

TV producer Tracy Newman, a close friend of Santoni, confirmed the news on Facebook.

“He had been sick for quite a while,” she wrote. “Those of you who knew him know how funny he was, what a terrific actor, improviser, performer, etc. So brilliant. I loved him very much and will miss him terribly. Another great one is gone. I have a lot of wonderful pictures of him, and will post them over the next week. My heart goes out to his son, Nick, who has been such a comfort to Reni over that past five years or more.”

Santoni passed away in hospice care after years of health problems, including cancer.

The New York native starred in Eastwood’s 1971 classic film as Chico Martinez, a rookie detective with a sociology degree, who gets paired up with “Dirty” Harry Callahan despite the surly cop’s resistance to working with inexperienced partners. Chico survives being shot by the amoral killer Scorpio during the film and ends up leaving the force, but not before giving a famous line in the film after Callahan gets the job of delivering ransom money to Scorpio: “No wonder they call him Dirty Harry; [he] always gets the s— end of the stick.”

Veteran actor David Schramm, who portrayed airline owner Roy Biggins on Wings for eight seasons, has died at the age of 73, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Schramm’s passing was announced Sunday by his publicist, Rick Miramontez, who said the actor died in New York. No additional details were given.

For the fifth year in a row, there could be new member of the Triple Crown of Acting club. Alan Arkin is just an Emmy short of the Triple Crown, but he may just get it in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for “The Kominsky Method.”

Arkin would be the 25th performer and 10th man to win the top three acting prizes — Oscar, Emmy and Tony — in the biz. The elite group has ballooned in recent years; this decade alone has seen the addition of six new faces. Christopher Plummer completed his set in 2012 with his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for “Beginners.” Helen Mirren (Tony for “The Audience”) and Frances McDormand (Emmy for “Olive Kitteridge”) joined in 2015, followed by Jessica Lange in 2016 (Tony for “Long Day’s Journey into Night”), Viola Davis in 2017 (Oscar for “Fences”) and Glenda Jackson in 2018 (Tony for “Three Tall Women”).

Carl Reiner is mourning the loss of his longtime friend, legendary comedian Don Rickles.

Rickles died of kidney failure on Thursday morning, his rep confirmed to Et. He was 90.

Reiner, 95, tells Et the two had known each other since Rickles came to California to pursue his career, when he was still unknown.

Today, we're featuring Carl Reiner and his wife Estelle Reiner in 1984. Reiner performed in several Broadway musicals, including Inside U.S.A., and Alive and Kicking, and had the lead role in Call Me Mister. In 1950, he was cast by producer Max Leibman in Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, appearing on air in skits while also working alongside writers such as Mel Brooks and Neil Simon. Reiner began his directing career on the Van Dyke show. After that show ended its run, Reiner's first film feature was an adaptation of Joseph Stein's play Enter Laughing 1967, which in turn was based on Reiner's semi-autobiographical 1958 novel of the same name. Probably the best-known films of his early directing career were the cult comedy Where's Poppa 1970, starring George Segal and Ruth Gordon, Oh, God 1977 with George Burns and The Jerk 1979 with Steve Martin.

Not everyone makes it to 90. Even for those who do, not everyone gets the digital treatment from the Emmys, which celebrates Carl Reiner’s 90th birthday today with a host of photo and video moments from the star’s storied career.

Emmys.com worked with the Television Academy Foundation’s Archive of American Television to compile clips and tributes to the comic from over the years, including interviews with Reiner, as well as highlights from last year’s “An Evening with Carl Reiner” event at the Television Academy.

Joseph Stein, best known for his book for the Broadway musicals Fiddler on the Roof (1964) and Zorba (1968), died on Oct. 24. He was 98. The Bronx-born Stein also wrote the screenplay for Norman Jewison's Oscar-nominated 1971 film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof and for the Carl Reiner-directed 1967 comedy Enter Laughing, based on Stein's own play. "There are no limitations to the subject for a musical," Stein once said, "just as there are no limitations to the subject for a play or a novel. When people recount the great comedy duos of all time, Mel Brooksand Carl Reiner certainly top the list. Although they’ve each enjoyed hugelysuccessful careers on their own, their 2000Year Old Man comedy albums are among the funniest recordings of all time.

The two met while working for Sid Cesar on Your Show of Shows and pitched the ideafor the show. It was rejected but became their go to bit when trying to filllulls in conversation, entertain each other during a long day, or at dinnerparties around town. They never intended to commit it to vinyl until a famousfriend intervened.

It is rare for a failed musical to be given a second chance over thirty years after its unsuccessful debut and turn out, in its new production, to be a rousing success. But, that is exactly what is happening at the York Theatre, where Enter Laughing has not only been given a delectable mounting, but has also gotten great reviews and become a solid hit.

You may have heard of Enter Laughing, but probably not its musical rendition. It debuted back in 1958 as a “semi-autobiographical” novel by Carl Reiner, and was turned into a successful Broadway play, starring Alan Arkin, in 1963.
