Accident (1967)

FAQ

Accident

FAQ

In Olivier's film Richard III (1955), Baker plays the hero, Richmond, soon to become the Victorious King Henry VII, but in Accident 1976 he is clearly a villainous and smarmy adulterer Charley. It was odd for Olivier to get his casting so wrong, as he could usually type an actor straightaway, as in Laurence Naismith, a high-minded man of principle, who cannot go on supporting that child-murdering usurper Richard III, even at the cost of his own son George's life. The scene where he is helped onto his horse, and with his banner furled, rides to Richmond's camp is one of the best things in the film, though it's not in Shakespeare. Credit must go to Naismith, Olivier, who directed, and Sir William Walton, who composed the stirring music.
